After the announcements that Apple made yesterday, I thought I should post my thoughts about the new OS 3.0 and if it changes my opinion, even if it is of course early to say since the new upgrade isn't ready yet.

The new OS seems to satisfy most of my complaints but two:
  • direct calendar access
  • background applications

I do not want bacjground applications for getting notifications, it is just convenient using my pda as a computer and leave the most often used applications open all the time. On my HTC Touch I have Agenda Fusion, Opera and Mail open all the time, so I can switch very fast between them without needing to open the apps every single time I need them.

Direct Calendar access...I thought that iPhone 3.0 would make this available to all of us but unfortunately this isnt the case...
As long as Apple doesn't offer these two features I won't be returning to the iPhone. I will be using my iPod Touch which is a fantastic multimedia device and with 3.0 it will be even better, in every single aspect.

The new OS 3.0 brings almost all missing features to an already great platform. Apple listened to customer feedback and I hope they continue like that.
Maybe with OS 4.0 I will get my direct calendar access...

I ditched mine as well- about a week ago I went and got a new HTC Fuze. One of the things that bothered me greatly was no MMS- at all... yes yes I know you can backdoor someones phone by sending the email to <theirnumber>@phoneserver.com. Bah what rubbish- and when they send you a pic what a pain....:mad::mad: The other thing is why the heck wont it go into landscape mode for emails and SMS... seriously- and now they fix these problems with OS 3- gimme a break... I have to pay for after waiting for 2 years... I dont think so- and for the iPhone 3G- COME ON!!!!!!!!!! My buddies 25 dollar phone did MMS out of the box.... I love my MBP, but Apple has really dropped the ball on this one. Great gimmick phone, great innovation but definitely not worth the money when compared to similar priced smart phones......:mad::mad::mad::mad:

I do love the HTC Fuze though... yes I will concede that Win Mobile is a little archaic and antiquated at times but all the functionality is there.:D:D:D

The Jailbreak solution perhaps is easy- but seriously these are things that should be out of the box.... I shouldnt need to buy something just to have to turn around and hack it. Its almost the principle of the matter- not to mention I am very busy and the little time I have should not be modifying a multiple hundred dollar phone- it should just do the simplest of tasks... I dont believe the people at Apple missed these things either... to some degree its gotta be money wether it somehow saves them money by not giving direct MMS or they wanted to make people pay for the update 2 yrs later... either way booooooooooooooooooooo on :apple: when it comes to the iPhone- so much wasted potential.

Pay for what update? It's free.

Even then

I thought I just read on here recently that it will cost to upgrade- theres another thread that I dont feel like tracking down... either way if I am wrong thats good; however still the principle. 2 yrs etc. 25 dollar phones do it etc..

Of course my point on cost for upgrade from the iphone to the touch still stands. But I don't blame them for the assumption that the poster was coming from the free viewpoint of an iPhone.

After all he was complaining about not having MMS for two years. Not sure how many touch users have a phone number associated with their device!

PI now out on iPhone!

The OP mentioned Pocket Informat as a major element in their decision. So I had a look at their website. Looks like a nice application - thanks for the heads up. Of interest is that they have RELEASED an iPhone / iTouch version:

Here's the page on their website:

I found this interesting:

We have a long history of creating powerful and easy to use solutions for mobile works. When we set out to design our iPhone/iPod Touch version we sat down and designed an application that iPhone/iPod Touch users could love. To be honest we are Apple fans here - all of our desktops, laptops are Macs; our servers are XServes; some of us have even worked at Apple in the past (recently and from the past)! So we know what Mac OS X users like, expect, and deserve.

They all use macs! :eek::eek:

Should be interesting to see future updates.

Do what you wish, if a different phone serves your needs better then get it. Only use the iPhone if it works best for you. ;)
