The 12 Mini didn't sell because Apple hobbled it with a crap battery, and unfortunately that became the enduring reputation of the Mini, even after they fixed it with the 13 Mini.
In what way did they "fix" the battery issue with the 13 mini release? Recall it was only a very slight capacity increase <10% or so which explained the slightly thicker case (0.2mm I checked).

Think the main issue is that Apple made ZERO effort to market it. Can't even recall a specific ad for the Mini. Could have been kids, gym, other activities, travel, in-car, handbag on a night out, etc. No use cases shown whatsoever. Just "oh here's a small display option" which translated into "we think y'all are going to be indifferent about it".

Yeah, no surprises here but I love my mini and will delay replacing it for as long as I possibly can. I got the 12 mini, loved it, and replaced it with a 13 mini when the 14 came out and it was clear the 13 mini would be the last one. Screen is small and battery life isn't great, so I'm constantly reminded to get off my damn phone! Its best feature is how it feels in my pocket!

I agree. Apple has the success it has while being its own worst enemy. Across the product and services spectrum their marketing and advertising is appalling. I do not understand how a trillion dollar company can be so so lacking in such a key area.

Everyone acts like the mini didn’t sell but it sold about 10 million units a year apparently (5% of 200 million). Quite a few manufacturers would love to have their worst model sell that many.

I did my part by buying my 13 mini on launch day. However, Apple no longer sells a phone I’m interested in, so I’ll just put a new battery in this one. I guess they still win?

What about a clamshell flip iPhone which would fit and feel ok in your pocket, at same time you have the chance to have a bigger screen when opened?

Just replaced the battery on my iPhone 13 mini. Good for another 3.5 years. China is targeting 2030 for a 6G rollout and who knows how long in the US. So I'm good for another three years. And maybe another three after that.
I kind of doubt China can get 3GPP-compliant 6G out by 2030.

But getting back on topic, I wonder why Apple haven't thought about a smaller iPhone in the 5.6 to 5.8 inch screen size? It won't be as small as the iPhone 13 mini but the screen will still be reasonably readable for older iPhone users.

Totally agree on this one. I remember not seeing any mention of the size differences at all in the ads. Even on the website, you had to look for it.

Apple today - is boring, and I don't watch the presentations anymore.
The news is out before anyway.

I miss Steve and the magic of his keynotes.

Nothing magic with Apple anymore. Just tools I need, that’s all.

Maybe for your needs. There are only a couple of apps I use that require an iPad and don’t work on an iPhone.

For me, in both personal and professional settings, if something can’t be done on an iPhone, it can’t be done on an iPad either.
Ok, but then you never needed an iPad in the first place!

If you needed an iPad for the screen size, you'd probably agree with what I said in my earlier post.
For instance, if you're dealing with video editing or keynote/numbers professionally, the iPhone is definitely unusable.

I'll never get why people want these huge monsters of phones. Even my 13mini is to big for my taste. I may really go watch only in the future. I hate that big and heavy ****.

I had the battery replaced in my iPhone 5 when I had the iPhone 13 mini done. It makes a great music player and communications device while running.

5,8 its enough mini for me. iPhone X size was perfect.
I picked up a refurb X after my 12 mini died to use as a backup. I still pick it up from time to time. The X was the perfect 4G phone - but only if it was naked. And naked made it very fragile as proven by me shattering a previous X in late 2020. Strangely my 15 Pro is barely larger than the X, but feels much larger due to the squared sides and bigger screen. Today I forgot to put a case on the 15 Pro before I left the house so it is with me naked. Frankly, I feel more confidence with these phones and that may be all I need, knock on wood. As for the mini, maybe it would've fared better with a 9 mm thick body to hold a much more substantial battery. Heat dissipation would've been harder given the size. We'll never know.

Don't think a small phone will ever be released by Apple. The current screen sizes will more or less remain the same. The only change I am expecting to see in the lineup will be the foldable iPhones. Other than that expecting the dimensions to remain the same.
Actually I see the trend going in the opposite direction. It is easy to foresee that the current 6.1” iPhones (iPhone 15, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e) will fall to the wayside, with the smallest iPhones being 6.3” (except for possibly a folding phone).

For all of the mini fans out there, I know you’re frustrated, but please stop beating this dead horse. Maybe a folding iPhone will work for you, more or less depending on its size. Now if the price works for you is another matter.

Update - In hindsight, maybe I was a little too harsh with my words. I still believe it’s highly unlikely we’ll get another mini, unless Apple’s possible success with a folding iPhone motivates Tim to green light a smaller foldable which some mini owners might consider a close enough replacement. Apple could’ve turned an updated mini into a new SE, but unfortunately they didn’t take that path. My mom has a 13 mini and she prefers the smaller size. Eventually even she will have to move on. It is what it is.

Why should anyone stop talking about it just because you don't like reading about it? You're just going to have to deal with it. It's not as bad as mini owners dealing with the lack of a replacement anyway. It is what it is.

Sorry people, y’all didn’t buy them in high enough numbers to warrant it more than two models.
It was cancelled after the mini 12. It takes more than a year to develop a phone so the 13 arrived on momentum alone. It's a shame they delivered the 12 with poor battery life, it probably would have sold more otherwise. Additionally the plus that replaced the mini looks to be done as well after 3 years with better, but not great sales.

If customers don't buy phones it's the manufacturers fault, not the customers. Tim Cooks desire for a Phone at every $100 price-point and Apple's lazy 2d scaling of their phones (scale height and width, but leave thickness the same) has been the problem, not the screen size.

They really should make 16e Mini that is the size / width of iPhone SE so about 5.7". And sell it at $499.
They won't because that'll require them designing new screens and parts.

The 16E (and SE line) are all about frankensteining together last generation screens and bodies which have already paid off their R&D with current generation chips (albeit lower binned).

It's the leftover curry surprise of the iphone world.

If the mini line had lived on another year to make it to the 14 series, then i could definitely imagine a 16E being in the mini formfactor, but as it is; the factories that made the screens and bodies for the mini series have move onto different things.
