here's how much yanks got tied up (not including option years):

jeter: $19 mil, until 2010
mussina: $16 mil, until 2006
brown: $15 mil, until 2005
a-rod: $14 mil, until 2010
giambi: $14 mil, until 2008
bernie: $12 mil, until 2005
vazquez: $10.5 mil, until 2007
posada: $9 mil, until 2006
contreras (yes, contreras): $9 mil, until 2006
sheff: $8.5 mil, until 2006
rivera: $8.89 mil, until 2007
matsui: $7 mil, until 2005
karsay: $6 mil, until 2005
lofton: $2.1 mil, until 2005

Bernie will retire after next year, plus he was solid during the playoffs.
Jeter will stay as he is the captain and the leader of the team.
A-rod will be here because he is A-rod.
Posada will stay being one of the originals
Sheff will stay.
Matsui is a good hitter.
The others are up for grabs.

Its obvious that Pedro is not what he was and can't pitch anything over 100 pitches, but can he be turned into a mid inning reliever?

you are still not getting my point: no one wants any of those contracts even if they are "up for grabs."

so you have 13 players tied to $150 mil. good luck fielding a coherent and competitive team by finding 12 more players without going over, hmm, say $200 million? (plus luxury tax, etc.)

by the way, bernie, as well as he played in the playoffs, is now a defensive liability in the CF. he's certainly not a very good DH, esp. for $12 mil.

pedro will never pitch in relief. one, it would be a waste of money. two, he is a starter and wouldn't accept it. it would be like asking jeter to be a situational pinch runner. won't happen.

just like mariners went from 96 wins to 99 losses in one year, a similar thing can happen to the yanks, even if they won 101 games this year.

players get old and thus there's an increased chance of collective under-achievement. to think that the yanks had an enormous hole to fill in the playoffs when a first baseman (albeit with several gold gloves to his credit) who was released from a 99 loss team went down with injuries speaks volume about how wastefully those $180 million were spent.

I don't think things will get that bad, if that were the case they wouldn't of made it this far this year. I don't think the AL East is strong enough to bump the Yankees, as the Mariners are in a strong division with no players at all. It is obvious now that the AL East will be a fight between the Yankees and Red Sox for years to come. I think the Sox will spend more money to catch the Yankees, and the Yankees will spend more money to stay on top.

Now its on to the World Series. I think that it's better to be playing against St. Louis. The battle of the East against the heartland. The Texas game could have been too political usable. This way there isn't a connection. It's two teams that deserve to be in the series.

just wanted to wrap up this thread and mention that the thread title turned out fairly prophetic in the end... sox did sweep the yanks... in the last four games of the ALCS. :D

Tonight the Red Sox have a very good chance of sweeping the Cardinals in the first four of this series. Finally to end an 86 year drought.

Sox will go to the world series. While watching the game last night with 5 buddies, it happened, the curse was broken! Let me explain. One of those buddies is my roommate, he was born and bred in the bronx, needless to say he is a huge yankees fan. It was during the top of the 10th inning, the tv was showing shots of the crowd, they were doing it all night. Well, they showed a shot of an 80+ yr old grandma in the stands, she was wearing a rally cap (sox hat tunrned inside out & and worn backwards), it was awkwardly stuffed down on her head with blue hair all over the place. My yankee fan roommate made fun of granny like nobodys business. After throwing granny under the bus he looked around to see if anyone heard, nobody, then he looked at me, and realised I heard him. I then I said "oh, you're gonna regret that". He shouted back at me, "shut up"! He knew what he'd done... he'd broke the curse.

Now you should know that I'm not a sox fan, and never imagined them ever beating the yankees, till now. Its hard to explain, but something happened, and my roommate knows it... Sox win in 7 and go on the world series.

My next prediction (no brainer)... Sox sweep .

Quoted from MacNut from another thread:

I think its 20 rings, this series looked like beating up the retarded kid on the playground. Try to beat a good team and see who wins.

The next curse may be the curse of Pedro or Lowe if they get traded.

geez, guess who the Sox beat in the ALCS? "Try to beat a good team and see who wins."?? i guess you are admitting that Yankees aren't a "good team" then?

Pedro or Lowe can't be traded. they are free agents.

i must say, a little anti-climatic, but it would have been hard to top the ALCS. i am not sure if i would have been able to stand another nail biter of a series. it's been exhausting...

great championship team.

This is a time for Red Sox Nation to rejoice, not to rub it in to New York. If Yankees fans are still bitter and will keep on making excuses for why they lost the ALCS, then that's their perogative. I guess sometimes the defeated just can't stand to admit that they weren't the better team. But enough of that. This is our time now. I honestly am still in awe and wonder. And I already miss baseball...

But they can be bought. Of course Steinbrenner already has a heck of a payroll that isn't going to be easy to trim down, but he may have been given the motivation to swallow that.

Another interesting factoid. On opening day April 11th. The Red Sox will host the Yankees. It will also be the same day that the Red Sox players will receive their Championship rings.

AND...if the Yankees do acquire Pedro and/or Lowe, that means that they both will receive their rings in pinstripes from the opposing dugout

well... I could go for a little rubbing it in. :D

But really, you are right. It's still amazing to me that the Sox actually won, and I, too, am already missing my favorite sport...

(at least we have the pats though!!)

I would hope that after this season, they will show some kind of loyalty to the team. Money isn't everything. If the stories are true about Steinbrener, then working for him should cause second thoughts.

The first game of the season is Red Sox vs Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
