I too am bothered by the lack of a space gray ring on my new 5s (as the box shows). The color contrast would have been awesome and would have fit the 5s line better.

Odd that this color didn't get the same design element as the other two. The new commercial for the gold 5s focuses on the gold ring coming in at the end. Space gray ring would've been sweet. Odd design misstep by Apple. Kind of annoying because I don't want a white phone.
Because some people need/want a professionally looking phone. The space gray fits that category well. Those people wouldn't like any shiny parts on the phone.

Because the chamfered edge isn't shiny at all right

Not sure what you're talking about; mine is space gray. It's just not as reflective as silver or gold, and the surface of the ring doesn't catch the light at the same angle as the chamfered edges.

Mine is definitely NOT a space gray ring and yours is not either (unless they are selling two different versions). If it was space gray it would clearly stand out like the edges. The ring is BLACK.

Mine actually is space gray. The reason it doesn't stand out is because the face of the phone is black (less contrast), the color is naturally less reflective than silver and gold, and the angle at which light hits the ring is different than the angle it hits the other space gray parts of the phone, such as the chamfered edges.

You may not believe it, but when I look closely I can tell that it's space gray. Funny that you think you would know my phone better than I.

Some people...

Clearly I do know your phone better than you. Stop telling yourself "it's the angle at which the light hits the ring". There is no space gray ring. If it was there would be clear contrast. Look at the back of your phone. Do you see how clear the contrast is between the black and gray??

Now, if only the ring was actually space gray...that would be awesome. And everyone would be able to see it.

I was actually thinking the same thing, here a silver ring, you remove the black, replace with this one :)

I actually think the one i just showed you would look nice, preferably.

that is an amazing idea!! The gold ring on a grey 5s would look stunning!!

But to go along with the OP, yes I am disappointed the ring is not more grey than what it already is. I think it should have a lighter grey color but thats just me. I actually love how on the gold 5s the gold ring sticks out on the front

Im glad you like my idea! I think its nice they they are sold for like five dollars, might buy a silver and a fold ring and switch them out every so often

Does anyone knows if the dark ring is prone to scratches? I wonder since it is made of SS instead of Anodized aluminum.

Id also be willing to do that, but is difficult to replace? I know the ring serves a purpose of sensing when your finger is on the scanner so is it an integral portion of the scanner or an individual piece?

We own a phone that allows us to communicate with people in several different ways, browse the web, listen to music, take quality pictures and video, play games, compose documents, spreadsheets and presentations, read books, and much, much more, all done quickly and efficiently with virtually no lag. Oh, and now it identifies us by our fingerprint.

Now, if only the ring was actually space gray.

It's too bad Steve Jobs isn't alive. He wouldn't have put up with this. He'd have given a keynote address where he'd show us four different icons spinning around. "A phone... an iPod... an internet communicator... a TouchID ring that is actually space gray"

Also: Nobody would be able to see it, because it's a tiny, thin ring on the part of the phone that faces you when you're using it, and faces the inside of your pants/purse when you aren't. Now maybe if they made it a DUAL-LED RING that would light up so everybody at the mall knows you're super cool... but only if it's bright enough to glow THROUGH your fingers when you press the home button. Otherwise, how is anybody going to know and care what phone you have??

Yea cause no one cares about the design aesthetics...you can't be serious.

They only have a multi-million dollar add campaign that focuses on the GOLD RING. But you're right as long as it's functional no one gives a damn what it looks like.

Why the hell do you think they offer multiple colors? Clearly a lot of people would like the space gray ring. No one ever said it wasn't a great, functional device. Some simply find it odd that this design element didn't make into the space gray version.

Yes, jam some hyperbole in there when you can't respond to the actual arguments.

Actually, their ad campaign focuses on the GOLD IPHONE. I watched probably the same commercials you did. It shows off the entire phone. Any emphasis on the gold ring that you're imagining is highlighting that the Touch ID is present on this phone.

Furthermore, you can act like a drama queen about it all you'd like, but no amount of arguing you make about Apple's multi-million dollar ad campaign detracts from the fact that you're upset because a tiny ring on the front of your phone is black instead of dark gray.

See, now you're just stating random thoughts.

I wanted a black and gold iPhone. I thought the gold ring would look beautiful against the black faceplate. I didn't get it. By the time the iPhone keynote ended, I was over it.

Want to hear a secret? I, too, thought the Space Gray iPhone would have a noticeably gray ring. Then I got it, opened the box, and noticed it was black. I got over the lack of a gray ring because I thought the black ring looked nice. I didn't get upset because people are less likely to see it, or because Apple's normally so committed to aesthetics and having a tiny, minuscule piece of metal be darker than what it looked like in the pictures makes me feel betrayed as a consumer.

So yes, technically, as far as taste goes, I'm in agreement with you. The space gray ring would've been nice. You're still being a baby about it.

No one ever said it wasn't a great, functional device. Some simply find it odd that this design element didn't make into the space gray version.

I'm not talking about "some people." Or "a lot of people." I'm talking about you, and anybody like you who apparently is dissatisfied enough with your phone that you'd have to sign onto a forum to cry about how your phone doesn't make you look exclusive enough.

Want to turn heads with your phone? Don't use a case, or use a clear case. Many people will see the black and gray and know that it isn't the iPhone 5.

I sincerely hope you and your phone learn to be happy together in spite of your differences. And I hope you get enough compliments on how new and different your phone looks, in spite of the fact that you bought an -s model iPhone, which historically never looks different from its predecessor. At least yours looks a little different.

I let apple handle the design aspect for me. If you think this is an issue, you should email Ive.

Wow josh you really do assume and exaggerate a hell of a lot. Why do you think I care what other people think of my phone? I love my 5s. I simply agree with many others who would've preferred a space gray ring (and might have thought it would be when they bought it). And it would've looked cool. I didn't start the thread...

Sorry. You nerds all look the same to me.
