Sad, isn't it?

Nothing new.

You didn't think those 500 million "users" that Facebook is so proud of are actually real people, right? :p

The majority of accounts on social sites are likely spammers.

I anticipate that Apple will change their policies so that only accounts with a credit card can post to Ping. If Apple has reason to believe that the account is based on a stolen car they can report it to the card company. I suspect that using a stolen credit card to set up an account is a crime.

That is discrimination and I can smell a lawsuit just for that. Remember the old lady that wanted to buy an iPad with cash, got denied and then Apple had to give her one for free cause they discriminated her.

Ping seems poor. It feels awkward and clunky to use - i.e. you have to go to a separate area of the store to be "social". To make it work it should be better integrated with the rest of iTunes that we use daily. Last.fm is better.

In fact I find iTunes as a whole pretty poor to use. I much prefer the interface of Spotify, which is much faster to load pages, and is very easy to jump from tracks to artists, etc.

Apple build great hardware and software. But I think it depends on the team. The iTunes team reminds me of their web team - not up to scratch.

Automatically block any comment that contains anything that resembles a URL. Spammers slink back into the slime. Ping carries on.

Spammers should be hunted down like the animals they are and sent to some sort of island to spend the rest of their lives collecting beach rocks.

I guess people who had a life until now and did not waste 8 years of it online? :p

Crap spams were understandable 7-8 years ago but now it makes me wonder who on earth can still fall for them!?!?!

Obviously quite a few people otherwise they wouldn't bother with it...

Anyway, it will be interesting to see how will Apple handle this poo...

It's not discrimination.

What's next, can I pay with aluminum recycling cans?

I haven't looked at Ping yet since I haven't upgraded to iTunes 10, but I don't plan to even try it if it's just going to be another spam magnet. There's enough spam as it is.

Ummmmm.... MacRumors, Free iPhones are not a scam. You just de-legitified the freebie community even more.

Now, there are scams, but every one is not a scam. Take Trainn for example. They're legit, yet Mac Rumors is calling them a scam?

When you have twitter or facebook, same things and more on TW or FB. Ping seems useless.

unlike pong, twitter seems to have almost every artist and actor on there. and they will answer you sometimes if you talk to them.

LOL, didn't know Eric Slivka is behind the spam!

How else did he get the account disabled message? ;)

This goes with the territory in the social network arena.

I, for one, will not use Ping. Just like I won't use Facebook's "places" feature or whatever new thing there is to keep me constantly on the grid. I prefer to maintain as much privacy as the internet will allow. Besides, I'm sure no one really cares if I was at Starbucks five hours ago.
And while I don't begrudge anyone's choice to fully embrace social media and networking, I for one think there is a distinct irony in the fact that while we are presumably using to connect, and constantly feed the need to feel connected, it is (in my opinion) actually keeping us distant.

I look at the kids growing up with this as a ubiquitous part of their lives, and I realize how socially awkward some of them really are.

I'll hang out with my friends and hear about new music and what-not the old fashioned way, by actually talking about it. With our voices. In person.

Eh. Maybe I'm just getting old.

It's discrimination against people who don't have credit cards. Now I don't know if that's against the law, or even if it's wrong or right. One could argue that the rich are more likely 'not' to have a credit card, as they are rich, so I don't know if you could point to any group of people and say that they are the one's being discriminated against.

What kind of person doesn't have a card? If they can't handle it they are going to be big failures as the technology leaves them behind.

Some artists are starting to comment on Twitter that their Ping "name" has been taken over by someone who isn't them, presumably to pretend to be the celebrity.

Ben Folds a few minutes ago: "I was not aware that I had a Ping account... At present I don't know who created said account...checking into it now"

If you don't get one when you're in college through one of those scammy t-shirt deals, it can be very, very hard to get a real credit card. Most banks won't even give you a debit card without a credit score, even if you have a bad credit score you can get more cards. No score=no cards.

The only exception I'm aware of is certain new car programs for people with no credit (but no bad credit).

That's how I got my first credit card. i was 24 years old, I tried to get a card from 3 different places, and they all said no because i had "insufficient credit" despite the fact that I'd lived alone and been paying rent/utilities on my own for almost 6 years at that point. My car broke down, and I decided to buy a new one through one of the "just out of college" programs they had a few years ago. I got 3 credit card offers in the mail before I even took possession of my car.

In other words...credit card companies are stupid.
