I'm not sure how much they cost now, but I got a decent CSW 2.1 digital system for $80...

All right.

First off, FORGET THE SOUNDSTICKS and iSUB. Those who say they are impressed may be impressed but only to a certain extent.

Second, my father owns a stereo/electronics store and has compared basically all the top brands you can think of, INCLUDING the Pro Speakers and the Soundsticks. I asked him if the Cambridge Systems would give me better sound than the Soundsticks. He recommended CSW and also PSB. If you are looking for a cheap but effective method go with a 2.1 system from Cambridge. They have plenty of systems under $100. Those speakers and sub might SEEM small, even with the specs listed for the watts produced, but, if you think the Soundsticks impress you, you haven't heard jack ****.

Take my word for it. I have 2.1 out of 4.1 working at home and I get such a vast improvement over the Pro Speakers I refuse to go back to them unless it was a necessity.

Let me show you how much power the sub can produce. With the FPS2000 the sub has a dial on it, to adjust the amount of low frequencies it sends through the house. I was very satisfied with the dial only one FOURTH of the way up!

Think it through, MacMaster. For something under the budget and for something with pure quality, I strongly recommend the Cambridge Soundworks. There are many options for a 2.1 system; you have to choose which one you want to spend more money for more power on.

does anybody know about hooking up to stereos? when i try to do it, my subwoofer always gets some bass feedback into it, even if my powermac isn't running any sound, it will just have a low frequency tone. is there a way to fix this?

The CSW systems run either $80 or $150 for the upper two packages (2.1 system). The one that is $150 has a 6-1/2" subwoofer...

From the web site... "MicroWorks by Henry Kloss is a multimedia speaker system with incredibly accurate sound that actually has more power, more output and more bass than a lot of home stereo systems. Henry Kloss has carefully fine-tuned MicroWorks to produce its natural, accurate, wide-range sound. This process includes tailoring its built-in amplifier to optimize the speakers' performance. The built-in amplifier features 67 watts total, making it more powerful than similar systems. And its subwoofer and satellite drivers are larger. The result: MicroWorks has over four times the acoustic output of most multimedia speaker systems. Deeper and stronger bass response along with the clear, wide-range sound enable MicroWorks to easily fill a living room, a conference room, even a small auditorium, with beautiful music. It's terrific for making multimedia presentations on your computer. "

I have the next one down ($80) on my game pc at the moment (haven't pulled the $150 one out and connected it yet) and it is VERY sweet.

BTW, CSW also has another system (Ensamble III subwoofer/satellite system) that has a watt rating from 20-200 (min-max). Granted that system has a slightly larger set of satellite speakers. From the information I have been give, the CSW speaker sets are not usually rated the same as other speaker systems. Where other systems list theoretical maximum wattage numbers (to inflate them) CSW [typically] lists the minimum as the rating. That is why you get a much more powerful system that has [slightly] lower numbers.

Don't go by just wattage numbers when making your decision... If there is a CSW store near you, go into one, tell them that you want a speaker set for your computer (make sure you tell them you want a 2.1 system) and listen to them. Bring a cd with you for testing, something you will be playing on the computer, so that you can get a better test of the quality of the speakers.

I have never been disappointed with my CSW speakers at home.

I think I'll get the CSW 2.1 digital speakers(the ones for $70 now). They are a good price and you guys sound happy with them.:)

Wait!!!!!!!!!! Did you try Compusa?
They have a huge selection of speakers!!:D
I bought the Logitech Z-560 for 136 USD (normal price $200):p
The point I'm making is that they usually run deals on different things!!
If you do buy from Compusa, make sure you buy their replacement plan!!!
It is worth it, because you can blow your speakers and get new ones with no questions asked!!

Actually, the [in]compusa protection plan is a waste of money. This is especially true when it comes to purchasing Mac systems. IF you manage to blow your CSW speakers, then you are using them WAY above their parameters which would make you deaf (as well as stupid). :p :D

I thought you was smart Alpha?:p

It's called a replacement plan, and what that "means" is that you can get new speakers every year!!!! just blow them out ;) and take 'em back:p

Technology changes every year, so you will get the best speakers each year:cool:

That makes a ton of sense, if you're an *******... :p

QUALITY speakers (like from CSW) are kick ass for MORE then a year, where the rest HAVE to update every year just to try and get more people to buy them.

How often would you replace the speakers on your stereo?? You pay good money for those and don't look to replace them for 20+ years. My father picked up a set of speakers in the early 80's that STILL function 100% and kick ass. My mother uses them [still] on the tv in her living room. Eventually, speakers die, mostly from the fact that the paper used in them gets old and brittle. At that point, instead of flexing it tears.

Alpha...

Well, I have a few questions. Are you using the 2.1 CSW on your gaming PeeCee?

I was checking out building one today, and it was a total of 880 dollars w/o Monitor, Keyboard, and Speakers. This was with a Radeon 9000 Pro.

My other question is on googlegear.com (the site i seem to find best prices), the GigaByte Mobo says P4...but you said you put the AMD 2100+ in it. Am i missing somethin?

I have the ones that sell for ~$80 attached at the moment, but will soon be attaching the ~$150 ones to the game pc.

The Giga-Byte board I referenced in the PM was made for the AMD chipset... If you see the model come up as a GA7xxxx it is for the AMD chipset... if it comes up as GA8xxxx then it is for the intel (poc). You also DO want the Socket A board (which is the connection type AMD is using for the current chips). One like this for example... or better yet, this one which supports PC2700 (DDR333) memory...

You could also check out Motherboard Express for parts... Just remember, don't purchase hard drives that come up as 'bare' since those are grey market/OEM parts that you might not be able to get warranty service on. You are better off purchasing retail packaged hard drives (as well as optical drives).

BTW, WTF are you going for the dead tech of an LS120??? A burner is a better choice (didn't you mention you would be getting one of those to toss inside the case?). You could even save a few $$ by getting a 24x burner (~3-1/2 minute 700MB burn time, at least on a Mac with Toast).

I read your moronic post, *******, and responded accordingly... ANYONE that knows ANYTHING about quality speakers knows that they are made to last. Also, if you keep blowing out brand new speakers every year, eventually even the people at compusa will pick up on it and refuse to just give you replacement speakers.

The reference I gave was to illustrate how quality speakers last a long assed time. They have been played loud for many years, and still perform as desired/expected.

BTW, the subwoofer (on the DTT3500 system) has made the entire house rattle during movies, or regular tv broadcasts where they put enough base through. That was at less then 1/2 volume as well... I don't even want to think about what would happen if I cranked them up all the way.

In actuality, I know A LOT about audio equipment:p

As a matter of fact, My home systems will more than likely ANNIHILATE your subordinate set-up:p My two Bose satellites will crush glasses alone,:p Hell, my Z-560's coming out of my TiBook has sufficent power to move my printer to the Italian marble floor on level 6!!! you simpleton:cool:

Alpha

Yea, we have a Bose Acoustomass series, and the sub is pretty nice.

Now about the CSW speakers. The ones you have hooked up now are the ones that are 69.99...black...right?

Right now I am using some Yamaha Speakers, which are actually quite good, with a BassBite woofer that came with my stereo.

You claim to know a lot, and then advocate blowing speakers once a year JUST to get something newer.

You poor, deluded foolish mortal...

All that base must have jellified what little brains you were born with. You probably also have one of those mega-watt sound systems inside your $200 shîtbox/toyota that you drive around in.

Hey Row-dog, I was wondering when you were going to stick your snout in here... :D

Did the toy...ota reference get ya??? :D You could also insert hondo/a or just about any other cheap-assed japaneze car in it's place.

I thought of something today, as I was riding the Harley home... Has anyone else noticed how the Japanese auto makers follow the US makers??? Take trucks for instance, the US makers had them LONG before the Japanese had them on the market... How about SUV's?? Same thing there too... Hell, I think even the German makers did it before the Japanese did... Come to think of it, I have yet to see a BMW or Mercedes brand truck on the road... Do they even make them, or do they just do SUV's (for that type of vehicle)??

Well...

Who was it that said they had CSW speakers, and it rocked their dorm or something.

And to follow up with Alpha...

Yea, my neighbor has a honda P.O.S. along with his buddies. Slowest, most high pitched cars, with those weird systems.

Its funny, my brother has a '90 mustang he put some work into (nos and that kind of stuff) and they never want to race him.

My bro has a nice system...i think. Its a Sony Xplod
