Don't worry, without a doubt Apple (or third party) will release some sort of dongle which will allow to charge and listen music at the same time. Now that is some mind blowing innovation... and hey, think about all those pretty dongles hanging from your phone. Thats some next level design right there.
The headphones themselves could include a pass through adaptor to allow charging too

But iPhones are judged by their outer appearance! Especially when they deserve a whole new name or number.
I feel the difference between the iPhone5S and the iPhone 5 SE is even bigger than a simple "E" appendage. Have you ever used a 5SE after using a 5S? Completely different performance.

You know how automakers put different engines in their cars along with luxury premium upgrades in the same model? For example, drive a BMW 528i and then go drive a BMW 550i XDrive and then go squawk at BMW for calling them both the 5 series.

True, offering both would complicate things. Although Apple does offer options for Macs (different combinations of mouse and keyboard, for example), the numbers for iPhones are much higher. I guess we'll know soon.

IPad is a much more closer comparison, since they offer a wifi and cellular model in both sizes, as well as all the same options for the iPhone. And then there's the watches, how many different configurations there? And some of those cost more than the iPhone Plus. So this is all well writhing Apple's capability, especially with a pre-order. I mean who shows up at the Apple Store on day 1 anymore?

The biggest problem I have with this is that will they offer a bundling discount? They will surely sell the AirPods separately, so that allows people to figure out how much Apple is subsidizing the included earphones, and how much of the iPhone cost they are. Talk about giving your competition insider info ...

I expect all Beats full sized headphones to have a passthrough just like they have a 3.5mm passthrough now. I'm actually expecting them to have a USB-C on one side and a Lightning on the other so they can be used with anything, and flip the Lightning cable around to use with USB-C equipment like the rMB. The USB-C allows them to provide an analogue output, since I doubt they'll include a 3.5mm Jack as well. But they might as long as the Beats name is on it.

The more I think about it I'm looking forward to cordless head/ ear phones. I buy two or three pairs a year as I use them a lot and the strain relief connections go either at the plug or into the speakers.

I have a tiny bt receiver with a 3.5mm socket and problem solved I can use my existing headphones with my new ip 7 ( I will get it now) . Using the bt thing now and it feels strangely liberating I have to say.

Ok there may be some loss of audio fidelity but can I pick it, I doubt it.

I would be reluctant to use the flaky lightening connector for earphones which move around as it had trouble coping as it is without any side loads on it.

If this is what apple are going to do I'll let go of my use of 3.5

Yes I buy Apple come what may as that's me
