Adaptors and dongles are the very definition of stupidity for a mobile device.

Agreed. Just to be clear: I'm not the one who wants to charge my phone and use wired headphones at the same time.

I, for one, would be glad if Apple doesn't add an extra port to the new iPhone to optimize the head-tethered-to-a-wall use case.

it puzzles me they call it iPhone 7, when its basically same design?
Well they were going to call it the 6SS, but they had problems registering the trademark in Germany.

1) The one of the left is cheaper and easier to produced as already noted.
2) The one on the right is far more comfortable in use

WillyWonka.jpg Please tell me again how the beancounter is ruining Apple.

I am currently at 81GB free with my 128GB iPhone 6S. I anticipate I will at best fill that up by the time I am ready to upgrade to the iPhone 8/8S. With more and more stuff being streaming related, I think 128GB will be enough unless 4K video becomes a real thing in the next few years.

Finally !!!!
I hate the 3.5 mm audio jack ... it's old and useless most of the time.

I use the 3.5mm audio jack every time I go to the gym with my iPhone 6S. Bluetooth earbuds of the kind that I like(Sony) do not exist and frankly is not reliable enough when I'm working out and can't fiddle around with the audio if there's a disconnect. Of course all the earbuds go to using lightning connector I would use that on a future iPhone since I wouldn't be charging the phone while working out anyway.

Don't you think the text is too wide? Comparing to the back of my 6s Plus box this looks fake.

And do you really think Apple will call it a "Lightning to Headphone Jack" adapter?

That's become the accepted nomenclature here but really that's informal language. I would expect something more like "Lightning to 3.5mm Audio Adapter" or something.

It seems that Apple has changed their corporate font to San Francisco from Adobe Myriad...perhaps thats why the text seems different. I saw the same font used in the Apple Event invite.

I will bet the adapter will be sold separately in the US.
[doublepost=1472688563][/doublepost]
Holly cow. They have included it all. Damage control in advance.
International ver. US will be separate most likely.
[doublepost=1472688611][/doublepost]
I'm curious to see if they really do provide an adapter, seems very un-Apple like.
They do it for the iPhones in EU lightning to micro usb due to regulations.
My guess is depending on the market it will be sold separately.
[doublepost=1472688657][/doublepost]
What functionality did we lose with the switch from 30-pin to Lightning?
Cheap cables. Older accessories.

Options are glorious. Removing options is idiotic, especially when the option you choose to remove will greatly inconvenience virtually your entire user base.

Absolutely right.

Maybe your mind is already blown if you didn't think of this simple solution:

Wow, that mess of candy colored cables looks really elegant, and really likely to last a long time. I bet those support thunderbolt too, not just USB3. They'll probably also work great once the device's solitary port breaks from overuse.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

you no longer have to deal with with two cords (the charging cord and the headphone cord)

Today I'm carrying:

A MacBook, with charger
An iPhone, with charger
A pair of great sounding headphones that work with both devices, without batteries, DRM free and also work with every other piece of stereo equipment ever made

Tomorrow I'm carrying

A MacBook, with charger
An iPhone, with charger
A pair of great sounding headphones
A pair of AirPods that sound terrible and fall out of my ears with the slightest provocation
A cable to charge AirPods
A Lightning to 3.5mm adapter in case I want to DJ a party, use my GF's car tape adapter, or connect my phone to any other real audio equipment
Maybe a pair of headphones that terminate in, god forbid, a lightning cable
Maybe a 3.5mm to lightning adapter so I could plug those things into a real stereo or MacBook or iMac
A sticky note, to paste to my MacBook, reminding me to charge my AirPods

While extremely overpriced, more storage is always good. But I still don't understand why they're not going the usb-c road. Even their MacBook has it, the new the new MBPs will probably too. Why not make everyones live easier and go with usb-c.

Other than, "Apple is stubborn", can somebody explain this? It's not like the usb-c port is huge in size compared to lightning.

There are lots and lots of accessories specifically design for Apple/lightning connector. not so much when it comes to non-Apple phones/devices. If Apple were to move to USB-C, the other manufacturers will benefit from the move. No advantage/benefit to Apple.

Personally, I don't care for these accessories as I don't use them. :)

The advantage to Apple's user base would be staggering. Apple was instrumental in the creation of the spec for USB-C. For years, Mac users have suffered from overpriced peripherals and port fragmentation. With the rollout of TB over USB-C, finally there is truly hope for "one connector that does it all." There would be pain points, and the third party manufacturers would suffer, especially those bringing Lightning docks and accessories to market now. The benefit would be reduced frustration for millions of users, dozens of times per day.

Imagine you connect your hard drive to your laptop with the same cable you use to connect your phone to your car, your phone to its charger, your camera to your phone, your ethernet adapter to your laptop, your headphones to your device of choice. And competition and offerings from OEMs is stable and strong because one port moves between Android, Windows, and MacOS. Why wouldn't Apple embrace this?

The advantages of USB-C to Apple's user base are almost unthinkably great and varied.

Why wouldn't Apple embrace this?

as I said, with lightning accessories more prevalent the advantage is with Apple at the moment. The moment they move to USB-C and that advantage will disappear.

Some chooses to buy iPhones for the wide choice of accessories available.

You kind of missed the point there "macrumors newbie". Maybe you did it intentionally? The pictures were a proof of concept for the simplicity of what it would take to charge an iPhone while listening to a Lightning headphone. Apple's cable would look just like it does now but with a passthrough as pictured. But then you knew that didn't you?

Today I'm carrying:

A MacBook, with charger
An iPhone, with charger
A pair of great sounding headphones that work with both devices, without batteries, DRM free and also work with every other piece of stereo equipment ever made

A sticky note, to paste to my MacBook, reminding me to charge my AirPods

And of course you've posted another inflammatory list that doesn't even make sense.

Why would you go from carrying one great sounding pair of headphones, to adding AirPods? As well as a 3.5mm adapter? And another pair of headphones with a Lightning cable? And an adapter for that?

Seriously, if you're really going to burden yourself with all of that, it's your choice. Going back to your original list, and one great sounding set of headphones -- if you're willing to carry a 3.5mm adapter, then that's all you add.

So once again, you're being needlessly hyperbolic. One tiny adapter is all that is required for your situation to adapt to the iPhone. An adapter you can just leave attached to the end of your headphones most of the time until you encounter a situation that requires you to remove it. There are all kinds of arguments you can make about how forgetful and irresponsible with little adapters you are, so make those, and maybe you'll have a point. But this argument just illustrates why you really signed up to MR.

No-way this is legit. It's not the specifications, but the typeface and characters are all wrong.

The Specification sheet may not seem legitimate to you, but I find it highly likely the included adapter and variants are included. Other sources are saying this is likely accurate.

The point wasn't to illustrate what I'll actually carry, it was to outline what I would need to carry (not all of it, of course) if I wanted to maintain the *flexibility* of what I already have -- an industry standard headphone jack. A lightning to 3.5mm adapter is another piece of garbage in a landfill in 5 years.

Uhh

1. That's an inelegant mess of garbage.
2. Its a lot of crap to carry around.
3. It will pass USB3 but not thunderbolt
4. Its likely to break the device's solitary port from stress and overuse.
[doublepost=1472698489][/doublepost]

Where are these product photos from? Thunderbolt supports daisy chaining, but not USB. USB needs a hub. Photo 2 would just make all your devices pop an error, unless there's a lot of magic in that tangerine plastic.

Absolutely right.

How could I possibly understand, using Macs for 30 years. I bow to your wisdom, master of... an internet forum. Please link us to your Gofundme page so we can all fork over cash for your brightly colored vaporware.

I'd like to think Apple is headed in the direction of using Bluetooth for headphones and induction for charging, thus allowing them to have a fully water proof iPhone. That would be cool. Obviously not fully happening this time around.

The future is wireless. Not Lightning, USB-C, or 3.5mm. Wireless is already a standard embraced by everyone. In 5 years there won't be any ports on iPhones, and the majority of the industry will follow suit.

Yes, in 5 years we'll all be sporting massive sexy brain tumors from the newest addition to wireless computer networking protocols, Wireless Thunderbolt, which will have the same bandwidth as copper, require a transmitter and receiver box the size of a microwave, and also blow dry your cat. Wait, I'm sorry, reading OP more closely, the new "standard" will just be called "wireless," and will encompass... everything. Everyone will follow suit!

Selling something separately that a small minority might need sends a totally different message than including it in the box for everyone. That not only says, 'everybody needs a 3.5mm Jack, so we've included one that we prematurely took away', but it also encourages customers to continue using their cheap old 3.5mm equipment, potentially without even trying the new Lightning EarPods also included in the box.

And the topic here was "needle exchange programs in red states"?

A photo claiming to show a specification sheet for a 256GB-capacity iPhone 7 Plus has been circulating online today.

Originally posted on Chinese microblogging site Weibo, the image is just the latest in a series of pictures of potentially dubious authenticity given how easy it is to digitally alter them.

iphone-7-earpods.jpg

The photo in question appears to be of Hong Kong origin, and claims to show the inclusion of Lightning-equipped wired EarPods and a Lightning to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter in the box.

Those details square with the widely held belief that Apple's upcoming iPhone 7 and 7 Plus won't have a headphone jack, and will instead rely on an all-in-one Lightning port for charging, listening, and connectivity.

Yesterday, Apple added a 2TB storage tier to its iCloud service, which could be tied to the impending launch of a larger capacity handset or improvements to phone camera quality. Also yesterday, Apple was granted EAEC certificates for "AirPods" - wireless in-ear headphones which may be sold separately as accessories.

With just a week to go before Apple's September 7 media event, leaks and rumors of varying quality will undoubtedly continue to emerge at an increasing pace. Pre-orders for the new iPhones are expected to begin on September 9 with a potential launch of September 16 or September 23.

Why doesnt Apple grow up and release definite specs instead of resorting to this peurile rumour-tising? If its a good product it will stand on its own two feet against the best of them. It makes iPhone users look like fanatics when deciding to spend $1000 on a phone they know nothing about. It also makes potential iPhone candidates who are intelligently shopping around, err on the side of caution when every other smartphone manufacturer is offering real specs up front.

Holly cow. They have included it all. Damage control in advance.

You mean damaged dongle? I dare you to hook that dongle up to the lightning connector and stuck the phone in your jeans pocket. You'll be buying new iPhones every week - but that's probably what Apple wants. Pretty much the same deal with the lightning earpods. Good luck with that piece of junk.

The only thing that'd make me even more excited would be a Macbook Pro with 4 lightning ports - and nothing else. Screw USB-C, proprietary is the way to go!
[doublepost=1472717818][/doublepost]
It would make much more sense for apple to drop the 3.5mm headphone jack and include normal earpods with an adaptor than it would to make lightning earpods and the adaptor go the other way.

I can't think of any reason to make earpods use lightning that doesn't have way way way more downsides than keeping the current ones and giving us an adaptor.

Dongles are useless for iPhone. You can only use them when the phone is in your hand or on the table. Not when you're moving around - unless you buy a new backpack "Made for iPhone" to prevent the lightning connector from breaking the moment you bend it slightly in the wrong way.
