In regard to "needing" a laptop, perhaps you are unaware of this but it's becoming increasingly common for students at this age to be issued laptops by their schools. In fact, every 7th grader in the state of Maine is given a laptop (MacBooks I believe). Laptops are becoming a fact of life in school and this is only going to become more common. I teach in a private school and our entire middle school population has MacBooks - believe it or not these kids are incredibly responsible with them on the whole. Sure things get broken here and there but in my opinion the kids treat them better than many of the adults do. How are kids supposed to learn maturity and responsibility if you just keep telling them they're too young to do anything?

Okay, so kids "need" laptops in jr. high and high school now apparently. I graduated high school in May of 2009. I was perfectly fine not having a laptop through high school while taking AP classes and the like. And my desktop PC at home is from 2001. (1.2 GHz AMD w/ 512MB RAM). You don't need a "Pro" computer to get through high school.

Basically, I don't see why a MBP is "needed" at such a young age. Why not some cheaper PC. Relatively same specs for a few hundred dollars less. That way when one gets broken it's not as big a deal. And yes OP seems "above average" as you all say, but most kids I know wouldn't treat a computer right, especially if it was just given to them by the school.

the 13" is a MBP?!?!?!?

The whole "why does a 13 y/o need a MBP" is irrelevant. An accident happened. Why do kids in high school need cell phones? Same pointless argument could be made about anything.

Re-guardless of how ignorant some of these people chiming in with worthless bull ****, I would say just leave it turned off for a while. Your dad didn't know, so can't blame him.

On a positive note, my friends' brother was washing his car and accidentally sprayed her MBP pretty generously. She didn't turn it off. The backspace and some other keys didn't work for a bit, but after a while, it works as new.

As for disassembly, I have a early 08', so i don't know how easy tear down is. Worst case is that you need to replace some parts. Lesson learned.

Good luck

back to the topic....

Yasmeen I'm truly sorry for your situation. Accidents do happen and I can't imagine the feeling i would have especially with the $2300 i spent on my mbp i7. But you can look at the bright side Yasmeen, at least you opened up tons of peoples eyes when thinking its safe to drink around your mbp.

w/e i drink i literally put my cup on the table behind me lol. so i have to do a 180 in my chair when i take a sip. i NEVER EVER place a drink a couple inches to the left/right/front/behind/anywhere on the actual table that holds my mbp for this exact problem.

once again, truly sorry for the pain your prob going through but it must be known! no drinks near your mbp at all times!!!!!!!!

may the force stay strong with you, my fellow elite macbook pro owners :D:apple:

Same happened to me a year ago, and it went fine.
This is what i did.

1. Disassembled the machine.
2. Went over any wet spot or spots with liquid stains inside the computer with a q-tip.
3. Let it dry for two days
4. Assembled it again
5. Success!

If you know any tech savvy persons, let them help you.
And you'll find guides to disassemble it on ifixit.com

You know, I'm kinda tired of these types of posts. It's immaterial to the situation at hand, seeing as I've had to both console and gently scold 20, 30, and even a couple 50-year-olds for spilling water, cola, and coffee on they keyboards and laptops. And some of them didn't learn their lesson, either.

Aside from that, questioning whether a person is too young for a certain type of computer is almost like saying a musical prodigy is "too young" for a musical instrument. It could very well be that her parents considered a macbook or a netbook, but felt that it wouldn't last very long and she'd "grow out of it."

If her parents wanted her to have a macbook pro, then that's their choice. A mistake as made, and now she's calmly looking for options.

Couldnt have said it better myself. I hope the OP updates us soon. I would imagine a 13 year old girl going into the apple store and crying could work some miracles.

Yasmeen, what has happened with your macbook pro? I hope all is well and it's running like new again. Hey guys, if the liquid sensors have changed color, and there needed to be a repair, do the liquid sensors get replaced, too, therefor reinstating some sort of warrenty but maybe not on the macbook, just the part that was replaced. (Our old laptop had part warrenty extensions with every replacement of the particular part.) Good luck, Yasmeen!

1 Buy some insurance for your damaged notebook.
2 Wait a few months.
3 Have a spilling coke accident.
4 Report it to insurers.
5 ???.
6 Profit.

And OP I feel bad for you, luckily my spilling fluid and then learning not to do it again disaster was only a hundred pound keyboard which I spilt beer into a couple of years ago. Since then I never put liquid near anything important, my drawing room has 2 coffee tables in it; one for my MBP and one for my can of beer. Not that telling you this helps other than to assure you that far older and presumably more sensible people can do the same thing.

As it happened some time ago how did things turn out? I agree with other posters your dad probably did the most damage to your machine when he turned on and charged up a soggy machine.

I bet there were also countless times when you used your desktop pc at home and wanted to bash your head into a wall because of how slow it was compared to a more expensive computer.

While you certainly don't need a pro laptop to get through high school, the 13" MBP that OP has can hardly be considered "pro." It is an entry-level machine, and guess what--13 year olds can be considered entry-level consumers. Where do you suggest this girl start with her Mac experience? A WhiteBook would have also been an entry-level machine, but when the OP received her MBP, they were just updated, and her father may have heard about it.

And the same thing with the Jr. High kids. Maybe they just don't have a family desktop, well... Maybe some of them. What is wrong with a 13 year old owning an entry-level Mac? Especially if it is not only used for entertainment, but also for school.

Well blame dad for turning it on. Here's what your should do. Go to radioshack and use an ifixit guide to take the MBP apart. Using a high percentage of rubbing acohol, and cotton swabs, clean the connectors, and traces off the logic board, and other internal components. Even remove the heatsink and clean coke off the CPU and northbridge. In short, remove ALL traces of Coke from your machiene, internally and externaly. Then let it dry out NATURALLY for 3-4 days. Them make sure all is dry. Assemble it all together, and pray.

But don't be suprised if it doesn't work. I never have liquids near my laptop. I ear by it, but goldfish crums should be harmful, just annoying to clean out of the keyboard.

Or you can look at the date of the OP......:p

OP here with good news!!

okay hi everyone. soo apparently while i was gone this thread hasn't.. LOL

well I have some good news anyways, we just left the computer to air dry for a couple of days, and bam. it began to work again. no lagging, glitching, nothing. the only problem I have is sometimes when I'm on my MBP for extended period of time the space bar starts to stick. I'm not going to take the key out and clean it because I don't want to break anything or do anything wrong. The next time I go to the apple store I will just ask them to clean it for me (if thats possible)

I got a kick out of reading all of you guys comments. LOL some of you guys have nothing better to do than to diss me. others, I would say , made me feel a lot better and left it at a positive note. I would like to thank everyone for their generous help and everyone that left me similar stories of what happened to your apple product. haha! they made me feel a lot better. thanks so much.

as for the drinking part, i'm not going to be eating/drinking anywhere NEAR my computer - and I mean that.

I HAVE LEARNED MY LESSONS YOU GUYS!

I just have to LOL about my thread. seriously? it was on the front page when I logged onto my account, and it had more than 4,000 views.. what an incident can do to people..

again I would like to thank everyone for your time and effort to save my computer. you all deserve a thumbs up!

OH, and i'd like to give a shoutout to "ranlives".. he goes to my school. and I live in a small town with hardly anybody having a mac (most don't even have computers where I live) and its really cool for someone to find me out of the blue

C you guys later!!!

Who cares if it was *needed* or no?! The father felt she was responsible enough to handle it. Guess what? He knows her a lot better than you do so who are you to judge if she should have one?! Not every 13 year old is careless or doesn't take care of their things. Guess what? My dad let me play with the Mac 128 k he bought and I was maybe 8 or 9 and that computer was a 5k computer at the time. It lasted until I finally convinced him to upgrade 5 years later. And I honestly was the main user.

I do like a happy ending! Well done you!!!

Hey kid,

Gotta tell you, for 13- you sound pretty grown up. Congrats on handling yourself so well in this situation.

Ignore anyone who bashes you. Sounds like you can hold your own.;)
+1

And... my daughter recently spilled water on my wife's PowerBook (which by all rights should've given up the ghost a couple of years ago). We let it dry for a couple of days and it fired right up. We changed the hard drive and now it purrs again. Could be fried, could be OK - don't lose sleep over it because your lost sleep won't make it any better or worse. You're a real cool kid - best of luck!

Well done. Just to say that i bought my son the base 13 inch Macbook Pro for his 14th birthday last year. So far he's not spilt anything on it and I've now advised him strongly to keep liquids off his desk.

M.

That is really cool is is now working. The sticky keys may go away with time..

I am really pleased your mac is be working OP.

But, there may still be problems waiting for you, caused by either corrosion or the sugar crystals shorting out your machine.

I know you probably don't want to hear this but I would still recommend paying someone to dismantle your mac and cleaning it all with alcohol.

sorry.

Just for your information, A bitch slap counts as two. Humphrey Bogart was an expert in this field. Dont try this at home unless the person you are slapping is Lauren Bacall
