sparky20 lost me at o.k.

For someone that claims to read a lot, you sure haven't learned a single thing about writing...

I'd sat a doubtful you will see a JB this weekend. Sorry I think when all is said and done it will be when 4.0 is officially released.

It's been stated in a number of places (including by comex) that the delay from Friday was only going to be a few days. Obviously I have no idea if we can take them at their word, but for the most part the 'official' sources seem to be saying "it'll be very soon, get your shsh blobs backed up."

I haven't jailbroken since 2.0 came out but what are SHSH blobs? Is that if I jailbreak and then update to say 4.0 on accident, I can downgrade back to 3.1.3?

That's the basic concept, yes. Although you baseband isn't reversible, only the OS.

Yes, its only for 3GS models.
If you have your SHSH's for previous firmware you can restore to those older versions.
If not Apple will only let your phone restore to the latest firmware out there.

If I'm already jailbroken with blackra1n on 3.1.2, would the Spirit jailbreak just overwrite blackra1n, or is there more that I need to do first?

Why would you want to use the Spirit jailbreak if your already jailbroken.

Maybe he wants it to be untethered?

EDIT: From this thread:

So, a 3G that has been upgraded to 4.0, then downgraded back to 3.13 looks to not be eligible for spirit? Sorry, I'm trying to makes sense of it while also studying for exams. The minds a bit fried

This has not been confirmed either way. I have a feeling it will work though. It seems this hack requires the 3.1.2, 3.1.3. or 3.2 to be running and active, which makes me think the modem firmware of 05.13.03 won't matter.

Being that this exploit is in the last 3 versions of the OS, I wouldn't be surprised it spirit worked on 4.0 beta.

My entire post is just guessing though. If I'm totally wrong don't blame me.

I am so stoked. I've been running 3.1.3 with the new bootrom on a 3GS, and have wanted to jailbreak for a while. I had hopes they'd release something once the iPads were out, but I was pretty sure I would be waiting until 4.0 came out this summer.

I can't wait to run backgrounder and other things! Just saved my SHSH files to Cydia and locally as well, so I think I'm all ready to go!

That's a fake. Official tweet from @Comex, confirming that release won't be tomorrow. He wants all the people who haven't received their iPad 3Gs to receive them first and back up the SHSHs.

Okay, dumb question time.

How do you back up iPad SHSHs? Is it the same procedure to find the ECID, and will firmware umbrella recognize it?

(I've been so focused on a potential JB for my iPhone 3.1.3 I didn't even think about it, but I'm pretty sure I haven't seen it mentioned.)

Just thought I'd mention that musclenerd has mentioned several times in recent Twitter posts that iTunes 9.1.1 is not interfering with Spirit, so that's one less thing to be overtly concerned about.

has also said a new version of umbrella is do out soon as well. He says it 's much improved.

To all asking - the next umbrella release will be a HUGE change (bwards compatible) but 1 GUI far simpler usage and auto ecid for all oses.

That was actually a retweet from "notcom", who must be the umbrella lead, I guess. Checking his twitter also reveals a lot of interesting info. (funny how ive managed to avoid twitter until now, and now I'm following like five of these folks.)

Edit: oops, I see you said it was notcom in your subject line. I'll leave this here anyway so people can point and laugh at me. ;)

at 1st I thought it was @comex then I looked and found it was a retweet so now I'm fallowing @notcom as well. So I forgive ya! :D I like twitter for fast news I don't care if somebody just bought a cup of Starbucks and what kind. or my life sucks post!

I'm not that great at following a twitter conversation as it goes through various people, but it seems like the earlier info on iTunes 9.1.1 being safe for spirit *may* have been based on a tester lying to the dev team for kicks. In other words, you should probably still not upgrade if you haven't (always good advice), and have a plan b in mind in case you have and need to downgrade.
