Out of interest, what happens with sound?

Say you are playing a movie on one side and Angry birds on the other side.
Or YouTube on one side and playing music on the other side.

Do both apps sound come thru at the same time, or, does the side you have last touched the screen on, play the sound and the other side go silent, till you tap that other side, then THAT sides sound goes to the speaker and the 1st side goes silent?

The last active app has sound. The inactive app is muted

Thanks.

So it's not possible to play a movie and play a game at the same time, as, as soon as you touch the screen to play the game (let's say Candy Crush) the movie will go silent?

That's a bit of a shame :(
Pity they could not have mixed it, like on a real computer :(

So you would have to tap back on the movie side to hear the film again, then as soon as you touched the game side, the movie goes silent again.....
That does kinda make some things impractical having this limitation. :(

I thought having a video on one side "whilst you did something on the other side" was one of the BIG promoted aspects of split view. Having the side you touch, kill the sound coming from the other side, makes this a bit of a non starter.

Shame :(

Can be a interesting Test Case !

Can be a interesting Test Case !

I can't believe this can be true actually.

Apple actually said about you can have video playing on one side and use another app on the other side.
If, reality is that, you DO have a video playing, but the second you touch the other side (perhaps this other side has a sound effect?) the movie goes silent and there is no sound, then it's utterly pointless.

Normal computers can mix the sounds and you can have YouTube, a Movie/Video and a game all running and all sound being fed thru the same speaker all at the same time.

I honestly can't believe this can be true and iOS really is this useless and can't mix the sounds.

This must be wrong. It would be unusable if this is the case.

Have to get people here to confirm you can have both sounds working at once, please.... When people here can test this and actually tell us what happens.

Thanks.

I tested this for you.

Two apps can not be playing sounds at the same time. It will pause what was playing to allow the new sound to play.

So if you are using safari and hulu side by side and you play a video in safari then hulu video will pause. And if you play hulu then safari video will pause.

No matter which way you try to play too things video app, podcast app, hulu app, even an audio clip in the message app pressing play will pause what was playing.

Basically its the way iOS has always been. Playing a video pauses music, now it just does it with the other way around. Even using pip will cause one of the videos to pause.

They thought this out pretty well to avoid overlapping sound from different apps.

You kind of make it sounds like you WANT sound to overlap. This is typically something that is avoided because it renders both unintelligible. Apple made it so its not a manual process, you don't have to worry about pausing the music 5 seconds into a video you started playing.

Here is a video...

As you can see you can still use Safari normally, but if you play a video or sound it will pause the other one so you can hear it.

With PiP you can actually get 3 videos on the screen at once but only one playing.

You would just have to turn sound off in the game

Thanks for the testing and video clip "cynics"

Very interesting, but I must say I'm rather disappointed. :(
Yes, I do want the sounds to mix, just as the sounds to mix in OSX or in Windows.

It almost feels like this is not proper multitasking still.
You may think, well that would be confusing, but think that in many games, it's just little sound effects, like in Angry Birds, little Squarks, bangs and cheers sounds.

Or course, you'd not really want two movies or two music file playing over each other, but yes, I'd like sound effects from one app to play at the same time that music or video from the other app is still playing.

Also, pretty shocked that the video on the left froze, when you played the you tube clip in Safari on the right.
Again, I think I was expecting this plit screen to be proper multitasking, as hey, we're only multitasking 2 things, and I guessed the latest iPad would of been able to run 2 things.

Personally I'd rather they allowed YOU to pause one side if you wanted to.

One thing I'm a bit puzzled about. Perhaps you can test this?
As I guess I'm expecting this bit to work..........

Say you are watching a youtube or movie on one side, and you are doing this with a friend who'd somewhere else in the world, andyou are IM'ing them during the film, could be skype or some other chat client.
So you are both watching the film, and sending little comments to and fro as the video plays.

I've actually done this on the PC once of twice. I've actually gone so far as skype chatting when watching a movie on the PC so you can chat little bits at the same time as you are both watching the film.

Would I be right in thinking, on the iPad's, even the latest one, if you tried doing any of this, as soon as you did some chatting or the chat client made a PING sound for message received, the movie would keep stopping for both of you?

I know this would work fine on the Mac or the PC of course.

I cant find a game that supports multitasking to test this.
To answer your question about the little skype noises, while watching a video in safari the little sending and recieving noises (you know the little boops and beeps) in Messages app did not play. So i dont know whether this would be the same in other apps but for messages the little sound effects were muted while a video was playing. So if you were playing a game, perhaps there would be no sound effects from the game if a movie was playing.

Interesting points you have made. As you say, it doesnt seem as capable as a laptop or desktop computer in regards to sound.

What is really cool is Dropbox supports pip now. If you open your Dropbox on Safari, you can stream your videos in pip. I did this right away and essesually became my own"Netflix" to all my ios9 devices.

Well...........

I know we are talking about a low power mobile/tablet device. So I am of course willing to "cut it some slack" over what it can do.

I'm not expecting it to run and play 20 youtube video's, 3 games and 2 movies at the same time !!!!!!

Given Apple have split the screen, I guess I was expecting TRUE multitasking of just 2 things.
Two is not asking too much I think. Just 2.

As I said, I've had fun before on a PC. Watching a video with someone many many miles away, and chatting at the same time on skype, so you are, in a way, as if you are in the room together, both enjoying the movie and you can still, from time to time chat little comments on skype to each other in voice.

From what I can see so far, this is not going to be possible on any iPad type product.
Of course you can do this on Mac's and PC's.

Obviously more limiting that I had hoped.
Given that it's "only" 2 things that are multitasking, and how much speed an iPad Air2 has over an older iPad, I wonder why Apple won't allow the device to do this?

In many ways it is "true" multitasking. The two apps are both runnning. We are talking specifically about sound. The little scenarios you have outlined are not common uses, although they are typical of ordinary multi tasking on a PC, so not to have them on the ipad is dissapointing. And skype does not yet support multi tasking so we dont know what it will be capable of!

I can have three apps working the same time. Split screen two apps and a third video playing pip.

I was able to test this for you too. The sounds do mix, I'm able to FaceTime PiP while a movie is playing in the video app.

Therein lies the rub, like on a Mac when you do this the background audio is greatly reduced and the FaceTime call volume takes priority to prevent feedback due to the proximity of the speakers to the microphone.

So while this is technically possible and the sounds do mix it would be difficult to enjoy the movie at a decent volume.

As soon as this video starts playing set the volume on your device so you can hear it comfortably. At the end of the video I kill the video call, that is how loud the video call would be during the movie.

Messaging and FaceTime work fine, this is something I was doing prior to split screen just now instead of the person seeing a standby screen you can still see each other because iOS puts them in a PiP window upon pressing the home button.

Indeed, this would be more common, but as we know some apps make little noises, bleeps and boops when messages arrive or even "new email" sound, all that kinda thing, the "audio side" of apps, hence me originally wondering how these sounds worked, when there was something on the other side of the screen outputting sound.

I mean, if you are watching say BBC iPlayer, or a TV show, you don't want it to be going silent or stopping as you are doing things on the other side of the split screen.

Kinda defeats the point.
IMHO. If I start a iPlayer, YouTube, Netflix, etc etc thing on one side. I personally don't wish anything on the other side to stop it from either working or to cut it's sound.

If "I" want to pause it, or mute it then I can choose to do so, but, by default I personally would like it to carry on playing uninterrupted as it would on a Mac. or a PC

As i already said i tested this and these noises do not stop video playing

For example.... can you watch a movie on one screen and just watch a youtube on safari (with sound muted) on the other?..... lets see if another browser will support split screen... i would like to test live stream for example on Puffin without sound and youtube video with sound on safari..... or 2 browsers chrome and safari with different yt videos... one with sound and the other one without....will it be possible for them to play simultaneously?

Chrome doesnt support multi tasking yet. Not sure about any other browsers

And i cant find how to mute a video within safari. The only way i can find to control volume is withe universal volume controls i.e. The volume control in control centre or by using the volume buttons on the side of the ipad.

I have to be honest......

Rather than Apple "messing around" I simply wish, given the iPad Air 2's power, and the forthcoming PRO, they would simply allow the split screen to be true Both at the same time functionality.
Not that you would wish to do it, but if you wanted to play two videos side by side and have both audio streams mixed, then it SHOULD WORK and just leave it up to the user to mute or do whatever.

As I say we're only talking about 2 things at the same time, which is not a lot given the devices power, and mixing the sound, like on a Mac or PC should just work and leave the user to mute whichever side as they wish.

Just keep is simple :)

On YouTube and other video sites, they have volume and mute icons below the actual video

Can you just have different video's in different tabs?

Seeing as how the Msoft Surface, will be able to do all of this any much more, and perhaps we at the same price point as the iPad Pro, I'd feel Apple still has some way to go on this new model to enhance it's performance into a real "PRO" device, just not a larger iPad.

Why? Let's be honest, that's stupid.

What you are saying is you want there to be a feature that serves no purpose other then intentionally inconveniencing the user and wasting time and battery.

The latest web browsers go out of there way to indicate where sound is coming because of this inconvenience. Safari in El Capitan takes it a step further with tab muting.
