Use a different outlet or a longer cable.

I can say without any falsehood whatsoever that I have NEVER had my cable end up in the hinge like that before.

Prepare to get peppered with flak for this posting.
This is probably the first time I had the apple lightning cable stuck near the hinge. I'm learning to keep my desk tidy..., in the hard way. But these are all Apple cables, lying around on the same desk near the laptop. Making the screen corner a bit stronger could reduce the chance of a damage, from the design point of view.

Lol, you are joking, aren't you?
I can understand your point of view. If it happened to others, I might have thought they were joking. But while you are using all Apple products, you might expect the pieces are a bit stronger...

So judging by the fact that this is the first time this has happened to you and I have never seen it happen before, could you actually chalk this up to simply an anomaly that does not happen frequently and is not truly a flaw in the design?

I mean, we could say the pointed edges of my MBP bottom case where you insert your finger/thumb to open the lid is a design flaw if I apply enough pressure on it to get cut, right?

There's an inherent expectation of normal use that doesn't result in abnormal occurrences in all products we buy and your issue definitely seems to fall under that umbrella.

I disagree that closing something into the display and thus breaking the display is a defect whatsoever.
If a nail or a non-Apple product gets in around the hinge and breaks the screen, I won't have single complaint. But this is an Apple charge cable that's designed to be plugged into the laptop from time to time. An Apple charge cable can get around the hinge and break the screen? The designer should probably make the corners a tiny bit stronger.

Smart designs help users to avoid stupidity. These are apple laptops, mingled with apple charge cables, sigh...
And what would you expect is a reasonable way that a designer might make the computer somehow not break if something foreign is closed into the glass screen? Would you prefer the computer is 2-3mm thicker? What happens if someone then closes something 4-5mm in the computer? Does the designer make the gap between the screen and display even wider?

Don't open the screen when stuff is stuck in it
This is a good rule of thumb, I agree. But innocent users won't know the Apple charge cable could get in the way. I found a bunch others complaining about the internal cracks around the lower corners of the MBP screen. They didn't even know why the cracks would occur to them.

You're underestimating how much force is applied on the glass at the hinge end of the display. Cables are not designed to be put into the display, and it's reasonable to expect users will take care of their equipment.
If this was a widespread problem, we'd be reading about it more than in this one thread. It's not widespread and unfortunately mistakes happen.

If you apply your same logic, do you expect Apple to fix the bending iPhone 6 with a brick phone? Or you expect Apple to tell people not to put the phone in the back pocket of their jeans?

In my case, I'm not talking about any other foreign objects getting into the gap. This is a soft Apple charge cable.

When Apple sells cars, this guy will carelessly run over his foot and complain that the size and shape of the tire reflects a poor Apple design.

But this is an Apple charge cable that's designed to be plugged into the laptop from time to time.

Exactly, it's designed to be plugged into your computer and NOT between the bottom case and lid.....

To be honest I don't even know how you got your cable in there. There is literally zero space between the two parts.

This is a soft Apple charge cable.

Still a foreign object that doesn't belong there.

Nothing would not even show up even if when I connected the laptop to an external monitor.
This would normally indicate something other than what you've described. Even if your screen or cable is damaged, you should still be able to use an external monitor with no trouble. I suspect something else is going on, unless a damaged screen component somehow led to damage to your GPU, which I've never heard of.

Nope, I explained the situation above. If something hit my screen it occured in an empty house? The only possibility then would be I closed it on something, but it would have to be something quite small for me not to be aware of it. And, when I opened it the next day there was nothing between the screen and keyboard. There is no damage anywhere externally.
Have had exactly the same issue and been gaslighted by apple in exactly the same way. Also have read numerous instances of this happening as well. Need to start gathering all these cases somewhere.

My MacBook Pro did the same thing. I *heard* it crack. I had it closed and under my bed (a normal bed with storage space.) Of course it happened the day after my AppleCare expired (the old program.) The GB saw an advisory for the screen coating, so they replaced the entire screen, but I was not going to trust it anymore, especially since it damaged itself literally in a safe place and no AppleCare could be purchased. They originally wanted $800-900 to fix it. Another store in another state came up with this solution. It just turned 2 years old.

The original solution was to use a lightning cable to screencast to my iMac. Let’s just say that the lag for Adobe, etc. was too much.

I bought my 13” MacBook Pro in February 2018 with AppleCare. Last night,I closed my laptop screen. When I opened it this morning (in the same spot I closed it last night) there were colored lines running vertically and horizontally from a black spot in the bottom right corner. After taking it to an authorised care center (not the actual Apple care center/genius bar), the tech said it was caused from force and would not be covered under AppleCare. There is no external damage, and I merely shut the screen, so I have no idea how I could have caused this, as the tech is claiming. I have made an appointment with the actual AppleCare genius for next week, but in the meantime, has anyone else had a similar problem?
The same thing happened to me. I didnt have something in between my MacBook nor did I close it, I left it open so nothing could've been stuck! I went to walk my dog and when I got back, I clicked the space button so that my screen would light up again and then I saw this. It were two of those stripes in the centre and a white rectangle in the upper corner right. I didn't close it before I left, nothing was resting on the keyboard, it wasn't charging and no applications/sites were opened so it wasn't overheating, there were no liquid nearby nor were the windows open for anything to might have fallen into it, and no one else was in that room that night. I've had it since 2017 and this happened in February 2020. The only damage I've had before that was a small crack in the apple that has been there since 2018 from when I dropped something on there, and I doubt that that has damaged it further since the apple is in the centre plus that occurred two years ago. Also, the stripes have gotten more over time. As have the white bars In the top of the screen. I am not able to see the time, day, percentage and etc because it is all a white line now. I never trap anything between my MacBook and I never have, I always close it gently because of my fear of the apple breaking through the screen, and I always keep in on my desk, secure, and only charge it when needed. Also, it happened to my brother who has the same MacBook and got it the same day as me. And it happened to him maybe 5 months later than me.
So I would say, Yes, this is apple's mistake and a defect. But good luck trying to explain that to them.

Another fine example of Apple quality. The question is: Are you going to reward them with another purchase?

This definitely happens, especially based on the multiple forums and posts about it. I once had the same issue, however the mac I had was second hand. So I think it was likely a pior issue that was festering over time.

I remember leaving it on my desk. It did not get handled a lot or moved as it was mainly used for work. I went to have lunch and came back to my desk to open it, and was shocked to see all these lines across the bottom of the screen and on the far right hand side.

No external crack or impact to the laptop since it stays in one place all the time.

However, what I do remember for years seeing two tiny specs in the led screen. Which years later became the exact same spot where the horizontal and vertical damage lines cross. I never thought much of them as they did not affect anything and were so miniscule. However, from what I know now I think there was some minor internal damage or irregular fitting of the screen which over time caused this sort of occurrence.

I'd since got a new laptop and desktop etc... but the mac still works perfectly fine as there was no impact damage, so can either use a small percentage of screen, or just connect it to a monitor and use like a desktop.

But yeah this is a strange thing, and can 100% happen.

Waw, really glad to found this thread. I think it's still a rare case in Indonesia.
It's happen on this 2018 Macbook Pro A1990 (15") that owned by my office for Work From Home, FYI i'm using it for designing & lil bit for simple motion graphic. I'm still using it for work on friday, but on the next monday morning & when i open it, the screen start to flicker in the right & bottom, also a small crack that happens spontaneously in the right of the bottom corner. After a minute, the internal cracks goes bigger to left side of the screen.

Things that makes me / us confused was that's no accident happens to this macbook ( falling / crushed / maybe wiping the screen to hard ), so when you telling the reason to everyone was like this does not make sense, but for sake of God it's really happen spontaneously..

When i check it to the AASP (named Mitracare), there's also a same case like this with same macbook but 13" (it's happens when the customer doing a meeting presentation & the screens starts to flickering then turn to black). The customer service said this things is very possible because of the overheat & overused, and harm the display screeno_Oo_O. The solution is only to replace the display screen and it's cost $820....

So the question is : are the newer macbook generation (mostly with touch bar) was more more more fragile than the older generation (before 2015) ?

Also hopping that this things can be noticed by Apple.

Thank you
-Rian

I have the same exact problem and this is the THIRD TIME! luckily I have Apple Care+ but I am an editor and podcast producer for a established comedian so idk how am going to be able to not have a laptop for 2 weeks. This like the 2 other times this happened was also spontaneous. I have an 2018 model that this happened to and I didn’t fix in time because I procrastinated since I bought a new laptop and now my AppleCare+ for old laptop is expired so I can’t even use it while this laptop gets repaired. But I just don’t understand how the same exact corner gets cracked when I did nothing to cause it all 3 times. 2 days ago when this happened I literally just went downstairs for a little bit and when I came back in my room and my laptop had this crack in the corner! Something has to be happening but I can’t figure it out!

I also forgot to mention that I have the same exact lines as you do but now it went from working and having those lines for a couple days to going completely black. If I close and open my laptop really fast it will work but only lasts 30 seconds before it goes all black again. Now I have to edit by mirroring my mac to my Samsung TV and it’s just a pain..
