Yep, Pretty off it.

So I buy a new macbook FOR spore and now it wont run. Im happy little muffin:mad: That means i have to boot into Windows! *Shudder*

Windows isn't that bad. The thing that drives me from Windows is the fanboys, not the OS.

Vista sucks though.

Very odd that the GMA950 is not support on Mac, but ok in PC. If you look deep into the Spore config files there are settings to make it work with the GMA 950. So it should work ok.

Sounds like the current OS X video driver is at fault here.

Also Cider could be a factor. What works well natively with Windows may work differently (slower, even) on Mac via Cider.

I know Cider has generally worked well, but it's a thought.

I know it says that, but it will somewhat run, right? Spore looks as intensive as HL2 or Portal, and that runs on the GMA 950.
You're joking? I tried it (on a Sony Vaio, 1.8Ghz Core Duo, 1GB of RAM) and it ran like ****. Why I upgraded to a Macbook Pro.

Why would you buy a GMA950 -Mac- to play a game? Hopefully you had reasons way beyond Spore ;)

And Windows isn't too bad, the GMA950 is.

is there any chance of apple updating the drivers to make it work? why am i asking, of course they won't but who knows

lets just put it this way..in bootcamp on my mbp i get well over 30+ fps on 1900x1200 resolution on max settings. In osx it won't run correctly unless I put it in 1024x768. At 1900x1200 it is choppy. I can't tell you the framerate b\c idk of any mac equivalent to fraps. Anyhow, bootcamp is definitely better for gaming hands down here.

Better drivers are always welcome, but nothing Apple does can eliminate the downsides of Cider--and it would seem that one of those downsides is Spore running poorly on GMA950

Just got hold of it - running on a GMA950 & an ATI 1650. Needless to say the ATI wins - but it *does* run well enough on the 950! :)

I have the MB with a GMA 950

It runs, but when I go into the creature builder I see blackness. the rest works..

I'm installing it in my bootcamp partition tonight to see how that works.

Odd the requirements for windows are different than Mac. Windows is more forgiving for lower end graphics cards where Cider is not forgiving at all.

Why can't they develop native apps for Macs instead of emulation through crappy Cider?

Any other input on whether Spore will work or not on a GMA 950 Macbook? I have a 1.83 Core Duo, and am either going to get a new one in a couple weeks, or in May/June of next year, this might be the deciding factor...

playing spore on a gma 950 macbook is impossible. period. it is possible however to play it through bootcamp.

Yeah, I am running spore on my macbook with the inel gma 950 chip. It runs just fine except for the creature editor.... I can do everything else in the game except properly edit my creatures. All I see in the editor is a black void, there has to be a workaround for this. Yes I know the game does not support the GMA 950 chips but there are ways around this type of thing...

Yep, same here. Hoping for a work around. :(

Bootcamp?

Anymore news on whether it'll work on a gma 950 with bootcamp? I'm aching to play.

I am also having the problem where the entire game plays perfectly fine, however when I try to modify my creature the screen is black.

Even the toolbars load fine, it's just the physical creature that it will not load.

there has to be some small work-around for this, I'd love to play the game in it's entirety.

Because of the blackness, my little guy now has his mouth on the side of his body and I have to swim sideways into things to eat them =/

wait, so you are saying that you can actually run the game in a GMA 950 macbook, except for the creature creator? I wasn't planning on buying it because i could not run the trial! This is great news!

it's not great news actually. . .the core of the game is focused on how your modify your creature.

and this screen where you modify your creature doesn't load properly, so you have to blindly place and size the pieces on your creature, successfully taking out all of the creativity the player can put into the game.

I really hope there is a work-around, for a bug that is so limited (ok, maybe it's not a bug, the box does say that it won't play on a gma950) you figure that there has to be some way around it.

sigh

uh yeah, i know what the creature creator is, and what limitations that brings to the game... But i prefer to play the game limited, to not playing it at all

Yeah actually I had the same problem everyone else is mentioning. Works perfect on XP with Boot Camp. Just make sure to get the latest Graphics drivers from Intel :)

well, bad news.

Now mine is giving me some exception error every time I try to start the game. So now I cannot even start the game, much less worry about the creature creation screen.

May have to go the boot camp route, does that mean I will have to buy a copy of windows xp?

lame, but Spore looks like it is well worth it.

Like some of you; Spore will actually run on GMA950 Macbook's - its just not very reliable!

Game-play wise, everything is fine - only when I come to the 'Creator' screen do I experience any kind of problem - i.e. I cannot see what I'm creating (although it does show when you flick to Paint mode). Considering the Creator is essentially the 'hub' of the game - it's a pretty harsh flaw!

Incredibly frustrating.

Full report (during my break from spore)

MacBook 2.16Ghz, 2 GB Ram with the GMA 950

In Os X not so good, frankly Cider blows donkey nuts. Performance is choppy and some graphics glitches, namely in creature editor.

I'm getting sick of gaming companies releasing "OS X" version which are just cider ports. Why can't they just release a proper binary?

Anyway, back on topic, booted into Windows XP via Bootcamp(fresh install, no updates or service packs installed... standard bootcamp drivers). All settings set to medium on 1024x768.

Runs fantastic! nice graphics, smooth game play... and I'm addicted.

Hope this helps.
