It almost makes me want to buy a Samsung next tbh totally off putting and I don’t even feel the need to sideload. Just how Apple adapted the rules is kind of cringe. Wonder what the EU will eventually (in like 5 years at their pace) say about it.

It’s like those companies here that adapt a cookie banner but you only have the choice between accepting all cookies or subscribing but then they argue „but you have a choice!“ or Facebook only offering a paid subscription to not be tracked in the EU. Shady!

You do have a choice. As you say, you can buy another brand. Then you can be done with this brand, which you dislike.

You can fine a company for not breaking the law. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t make it illegal.
I assume you meant "can't" here? The primary purpose of the DMA is to enable more competition and to limit the market power of big companies such as Apple, this is the complete opposite of that, ergo it is likely to breach the law.

1,000,000 installs per year is not really a lot. And if your app goes viral you will be on the hook to pay Apple hundreds of thousands, or even millions of dollars.

It's just malicious compliance meant to scare developers from using alternative app stores, essentially making the DMA another law with major loopholes that renders it useless. Yeah Spotify and Epic are just angry they won't get a bigger cut of their pie, but I don't see how this policy will be favorable to anyone else.

Why is my Mac grandfathered into being more open platform than my iPhone? This is insanity.
It seems like 99% of these legal issues and developer sentiment would disappear over night if they were forced to allow side loading as an option for iPhone users. Just as the Mac offers.
I understand the profit incentive is too strong here, but I really think this is at the point of damaging Apple's reputation. This rent-seeking is coming at a cost to user experience as an iPhone user.

Good luck getting more Vision Pro apps with this hostility, Apple.

I guess you don't remember the time when Apple offered 3 months of music listening for free in the music app and didn't pay the artists at all. How is Apple good here?

At least spotify pays artists unlike Apple - if there wasn't a massive uproar then they would keep this rule till now. Apple is *******s sometimes and this is one of those occasions

It irritates me more and more that we give Spotify so much attention in this. Spotify is an unsympathetic company that pays artists the least among all streaming services. They don’t deserve our sympathy at all, and the battle they wage against Apple is at least hypocritical.

That being said, the new App Store rules are in accordance with the EU, and all companies that think differently now simply have to accept it

Then, buy a Samsung. I really mean it, no grudge. I think the right way to change something you don’t like is to vote with your wallet, instead of forcing everyone else to do what you like.

Yes, Apple rules are kind of cringe - what else do you expect, they’re forced to do this! As a user, I would have been disappointed if they hadn’t done anything they could in order to hinder the DMA as much as possible.

Why do you think you can use other people's property for free? Can I listen premium music for free? Besides, everyone pays Spotify directly anyway, Apple doesn't earn anything from Spotify, Netflix etc.. They want to destroy Apple. This is the goal.

My phone is my property, not Apples.

If I give permission to Spotify to use my property, that's up to me. Apple should have no say so in it, otherwise, they are telling me what to do with my property.

Funny seeing all these posts from people praising this behaviour from Apple but they’re dead silent when it’s Apple helping the Chinese government suppress people or let them hack airdrop for years.

Remember airdrop only findable for ten minutes because China demanded it.

Good times
Yep, I remember the AirDrop change. And I also remember a LOT of complaining about it because people didn't like that the Chinese government was making demands and forcing Apple to change things. Criticism of the demands of the Chinese government has been pretty clear on MacRumors...coincidentally from some of the same people praising the EU's demands...

Funny, isn't it?

What is the difference?

China tries to limit freedom, Apple is forced to comply, even if it’s bad for users, with some workarounds in order to ease it (in this case, the 10-min “all” AirDrop).

The EU tries to limit freedom, of course on a much lower point of the spectrum, and Apple does the same as with China.

It’s the same behaviour and, as I said, the magnitude is different. But I also expect more from the EU, we don’t want it to become China (once again, still very far away).

I like, use and pay for Spotify.

But I dont like how they pay artists.
Or how they behave and whinge all the time.

Theyve had years to implement the hires music option they talked about.
But havent. And will probably charge more.

If Apple would work on Apple Music and make it more Spotify-like, I'd swap.
Keep a free Spotify account for car use. The car app doesn't even store files locally for times you get a telecom black spot...

Even the most ardent apologists have to admit that Apple’s core tech fee amounts to that install fee Unity tried to create last year. Both went down like lead balloons.

Dislike the idea of governments curtailing corps all you like but Apple is effectively hog-tying devs into sticking with the status quo which isn’t a choice.
