So many people here comment on how they think Apple, as a global business, should be run. Newsflash people: Apple is a for-profit business. As an investor I expect them to charge for products and services what the market will bear. Don’t like the prices? Blame your financial situation. It’s not Apple’s fault you can’t afford Apple’s SW/HW.
Nobody cares how Apple runs its business as long as they are not anticompetitive and harming consumers.

Yet Spotify charge customers more and pay artists less. All whilst having a massively higher market share. Scum.
Can you link to a source that compares how much of a Spotify subscription goes to the rights holders compared to the percentage of a Apple Music subscription?

I'm glad the EU is holding greedy AAPL accountable. I wish the US DOJ would do something to stifle their monstrous greed. I have Apple music because I get it for free, but overall it's a garbage app and I use Spotify and Audible 9 times out of 10. If I want to side load, then let me side load. The normies can use the app store and sleep sound knowing their phone doesn't have malware or whatever it is they're worried about. I've been "side loading" on my Mac and my Windoze computers for years and I've never once fallen victim to malware. Be smart and you won't have a problem.
I think Samsung has a phone for you.

Why would I not want to inform my customers that cheaper alternatives are available so that I can get more subscribers? When Apple Music is $9.99 and Spotify is $12.99 due to Apple tax, customers are going to select AM even though it is inferior. If Spotify can tell the customers that they can get premium at $9.99 from their websites, will it not help them? Also, how many customers Spotify must have lost because of this Apple's anti-steering rule?
Spotify can buy an ad on the Super Bowl and World Cup and tell the world that they should subscribe to Spotify on the web. Spotify is only prevented from marketing in their iOS app. If a user only knows about Spotify from downloading the app on the App Store, then isn’t Apple entitled to a cut for the customer acquisition 🤔

I respectfully disagree with the thought that they could have survived as a company on their desktop business and/or a mobile web app. It’s truly wishful thinking that they wouldn’t have gone chapter 11 without the iPhone.
Company that would have never survived let alone thrived without the iPhone claims they’ve been stifled by Apple. Please, go on…
If Apple has so much power that Spotify couldn't exist without Apple, that's a argument in favor of regulating Apple, not against it.

Apple was today fined €1.8 billion ($1.95 billion) for anti-competitive conduct against rival streaming music services in the European Union, and following the ruling, Spotify has praised the European Commission for its decision.

For context, the European Commission's investigation into Apple's practices started due to a 2019 complaint from Spotify over App Store policies. Spotify has long railed against Apple's 30 percent fee, and has complained that it is unfairly disadvantaged compared to Apple Music.

In a blog post, Spotify says that the European Commission has sent a clear message that "Apple's behavior limiting communications to consumers is unlawful."

It is worth noting that the scope of the investigation in Europe has changed several times. While Spotify complained over Apple's App Store fees and the requirement to use in-app purchase, the European Commission was unable to target Apple for those actions. Instead, the investigation ended up pertaining to Apple's anti-steering rules, and the rule that keeps Spotify from informing customers about lower prices on the web within the Spotify app.

The European Commission decided that Apple's restrictions preventing developers from letting iOS users know about alternative and cheaper music subscription services available outside the app is "illegal under EU antitrust rules." The EC claims that Apple caused customers to "pay significantly higher prices for music streaming subscriptions."

Spotify in its blog post further says that Apple has "routinely defied laws and court decisions in other markets," and that it is waiting for the next steps that will "clearly and conclusively address Apple's long-standing unfair practices." Spotify claims that it plans to continue to push against Apple until it is able to secure a "truly fair digital marketplace everywhere."

Apple has been ordered to "remove the anti-steering provisions" and keep from repeating the infringement or adopting similar practices in the future. Apple plans to appeal the decision and has claimed that the EC's view is misguided and has been heavily influenced by Spotify's complaints.

Spotify will soon be able to release an app outside of the App Store with support for alternative app marketplaces coming to the EU in iOS 17.4, but the streaming music company has complained that Apple's plans do not comply with the DMA and that the changes coming in Europe are a "complete and total farce."

I am really looking forward to Spotify going out of business. They have guaranteed that I will never use their service. They essentially lied to the EU government to attempt to get free product from Apple. It really does show the corruption in the EU.

Is this the reason why spotify is not working on Apple TV 4k?

It just goes blank and crashes. I have tried resetting/resinstalling..all the usual stuff. But no go.

No software updates or anything. It just "magically" stopped working. Spotify was working just fine few weeks ago.

Anyone else experience this?

They could if they wanted to. That's their business decision. And it would be up to Apple to decide not to release iTunes for Windows which would be bad for Apple's iPod adoption but possibly good for Mac adoption. And Linux adoption could be much higher had Windows never allowed for an open style platform which would probably hurt Microsoft. See how the free market works?
Yeah, Apple would likely be a tiny company had they not released iTunes for Windows.

I don’t see it in the way you’ve outlined your beliefs here. Spotify would not have survived not because Apple has too much power but because their product would not have had the longitude or runway to live and grow without the iPhone and iOS.

Without the amazingly successful platform that Apple created, Spotify’s service on desktop would not have garnered enough demand to truly flourish. I don’t think I’m proving the need for regulation. Instead, I’m saying that Spotify rode the coat tails of Apple’s success and became successful as well. Good for them! But they should not forget how they got to where they are today. Biting the hand that feeds you is an unwise approach.

Considering they still don’t have a Home Pod app or lossless streaming, are you surprised their ATV app is inept?

imagine if you weren’t allowed to install apps on mac except from the app store 😂

This is easy to imagine. I would imagine switching to Linux the same day.

I _chose_ Mac with the freedoms it has.
I _chose_ iPhone with the limitations it has. Walled garden has its benefit.

The last thing I want is having some bureaucrat limiting my freedom to choose.
