Surely due to legal pressure & not because it’s the ‘right thing to do’.

it might also force Apple to innovate a lot more with their default apps, too.

Oh man. This cannot happen fast enough.
I'd love to set Firefox as default web browser.

Recently, Firefox have upped their game significantly. With their focus on privacy, Firefox is definitely worth looking at. I'm using it as my primary browser on Windows, and using it more and more on Mac.

I think it's more about the potential of expanding the HomePod family with a broader array of speaker products. I can see more expensive HomePod systems at the high end, and a lite version of the current HomePod. Handling Spotify would help sales. A one year free AM subscription on high-end systems would also be a good move.

The signal processing and beamforming (for both playing music with automatic room acoustics equalization, and, receiving verbal commands in the presence of background sounds) potential is enormous. I see the current HomePod as kind of a technology demonstrator, similar to iPhone X. And there are better/more interesting products coming.

I wonder how many billions will Spotify need to pay Apple for the privilege. They may use the same rationale they do with Safari default search engine.

Nice move from Apple and their users win more flexibility. It’s a win win scenario.

hope this is real, i love the homepods for the large sound and low profile in my bedroom, but having to AirPlay is annoying as hell and requires your device to stream it, unnecessarily hurting your battery life

Yep. Until then ... nope.
Please please please make this happen. I currently choose Spotify because I have a student package with Spotify, Showtime, and Hulu for $4.99. To be able to use Spotify on my HomePod with Siri would be great.

It would be nice. I’m glad I have it on my PlayStation 4.

Is there an ad-block for Firefox on iOS? That was my barrier when I tried switching.
I use AdGuard. I bought the lifetime license for 50 bucks because it blocks ads in literally every app. Works in Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows. It’s easily my favorite app now.

Neither Homepod or Apple Music are that popular so anything that makes either of this products more relevant makes sense, not just for the user, but for Apple too.

Think in reverse: I have Spotify, why would I want Apple Music if the content is about the same?

I don't see the point of Apple Music if I can get what I want from Spotify.

Also, I can Stream Spotify from more devices than Apple Music, making accessibility better than Apple Music.

:)

All that, and also I have hundreds of playlists I'm subscribed to on Spotify, and thousands of songs in my favorites. Switching to Apple music would require transferring all this over and there's no way to do it automatically.

Spotify has been around a lot longer than Apple Music and has a large subscriber base that isn't going anywhere. Apple might as well appease them; they make most of their money selling hardware.

If Apple is gonna open up the HomePod like this, as they should, I’ll be quick to change my home from an alexa home to a Siri one. Only reason I use Alexa now is it’s compatibility with so many services.

homebridge or home assistant will make nearly all of those devices work with Siri if you have the time and patience, fwiw.

I’m fine with Apple Music. I know others aren’t.

I just don’t see the allure of Spotify—they all have the same songs.
I like Apple Music. However, the one key feature it's missing for me is you can't improve a radio station. Apple is the only service where you can't select thumbs up/down to improve whatever station you are listening to. With Apple, your likes and dislikes only affect their recommended songs. This is why I always have either Spotify or Pandora as an alternative.

Sorry Apple but this ship has sailed in my house. We have a family Spotify plan as it's what I use in my car. I've bought 5 Sonos devices since January and probably end up with a couple more by the end of this year.

Imagine if Apple TV only allowed the Apple TV+ app, that's pretty much what is going on with the Homepod. Which is too bad as the sound quality is pretty good.

Well, the other problem is that my son's first name starts with an 'S', has two syllables, sounds nothing like the name 'Siri' but every day Siri gets activated when we are talking to him.
