great job, EU.

break apple into pieces and force them to open it all up.

if they refuse to comply, jail them all.

engineers, even timmy himself if that's what it takes.

time to play hardball.
That would be a great way to make the EU look even more power-hungry and overreaching than they already appear to be. For people who don't like people having a lot of overreaching power...they seem to have a lot of overreaching (and seemingly unchecked) power. Someone should step in and keep the EU in check, instead.

Yeah, but that's never going to fly. This is them pulling the same kind of nonsense as their "Safari on iOS, macOS and iPadOS are 3 different browsers" argument to keep Safari outside the scope of the DMA. The EU is just going to call - and rightfully so - ******** on that approach. The OS itself also falls under the DMA, they have to open that up too.

I guess it depends on the definition and "rule book" like if it simply would say "they need to allow apps to be downloaded elsewhere" then Apple is not breaking any rule by still charging for that possibility or reviewing such apps

Double-edged sword. Apple needs some sort of compensation to host the store and curate the apps, but these large companies don't want to pay for the right to be hosted... 30% is steep for an ongoing subscription, but no business can operate forever doing something for free

It's only 30% the first year, 15% thereafter. I suspect Apple can make up most of that in new fees for subscription apps across the board.

Spotify better literally put their money where their mouth is, and pay their artists more. I really doubt the 30% “Apple tax”, is what was preventing them for paying their artists, especially since they don’t pay the 30% by not having any in app purchases.

I suspect it will go in their, not the artists, pocket. Apple could offer higher rates for exclusives and try to get artists to abandon Spotify.

Apple doesn't need any further compensation for that. Developers pay 99 dollars a year for the Developer Program, which according to Apple includes "all the tools, resources, and support you need to create and deliver software to over a billion customers around the world on Apple platforms"

Apple should stop acting so entitled. Without millions of developers Apple would sell zero products and wouldn't be making tens of billions of dollars a year in profits from hardware sales, app commissions and ad revenue.

Apple built the playground; Apple should decide what the rules are.
They should however NEVER be able to decide what rules to follow outside of their platform or services.

If a payment happens on Spotifys webpage with their own payment service (also outside of Apples control), then why should Apple get a single cent from Spotify for doing so?

Or do you think it's fine for 'Audi' (example) to require a 27% tax (example) just because you are buying 4 new wheels for an Audi from a car dealer outside of Audi?

Of course no.

This is such a NON-PROBLEM.

Nothing stopping people signing up for Spotify via their website and im surprised that almost everyone didnt do it this way anyway.

Meanwhile Spotify gets a free run on using Apple's proprietary app store and benefiting for that without paying.

So.. before they couldnt direct people to the website to sign up? And...? There are thousands of apps that exist where you have to first be a customer of the service having paid via a web browser then use the app simply to log in.

Spotify just want as many windows of opportunity to charge people and if the App Store was one where they made subscription revenue then that seems fair of Apple to me.

Why does Spotify even need the capability of selling subscriptions via the app anyway?

Disagree. Let's just compare music services here.

  • Apple Music - comes pre-installed on the phone, icon on the Home Screen, free trial and subscription sign up in app at the push of one button, uses your Apple ID. Apple keeps 100% of the income.
  • Spotify - you need to search and download the app, once downloaded you then need to go to a webpage to then register and sign up, enter payment details, log into the app and then you can use it. Spotify could have the subscription in app but 30% of their income would go to Apple, or they charge more to offset the cost but then Apple gets even more and their product is uncompetitive.
It speaks volumes that Spotify occupies the position it does even with all these extra steps. But what it does allow is Apple to hoover up lots of customers because of the ease of access rather than competing on the quality of the product. Simply put it's bad for competition, and everyone gets a worse product as a result.

Also, why exactly don't these restrictions apply to the Mac?

And why would Apple have to host anything when it comes to 3rd party app stores?

If you install / sideload a 3rd party app store where Spotify can be installed from outside of Apples own App Store, then where does Apple hosts or store anything from this?

If there is a 3rd party app store (which will be allowed in the EU), then it's the 3rd party app store that has to store all apps there and not Apple.

Ummmm...Apple doesn't take a cut of payments made on Spotify's web site.
Correct. But why should Apple get any money from apps bought from 3rd party app stores with their own payment systems where apps and payments services from them are hosted on their own webpages / servers and not from Apple?

You people seems to totally forget what the whole point of a 3rd party app store is.

You do not have to use an iPhone.
lol…if everyone who thinks that Apple is wrong simply stopped buying iphones I suspect Apple would immediately cave in to customer demand.
The only reason that they continue to get away with it is because people don’t vote with their wallets.

Tim said in court awhile back that this sideloading risks/extra expense etc do not have to be and now we will just have to charge you another way.
Attaboy! Mother Nature and Father Greed can be proud.
But, didn't Apple launch a 27% tax on alternative payment methods already?

Right. So don't buy a house in a gated community.

...and don't buy a phone in a gated community.

Exercise your choice.

On the contrary, I don't think they (HOA's) should even be legal, nor do I think Apple should be legally allowed to prevent me from doing what I want with my device.

Neither are the government, and therefor neither should have any authority.

Epic themselves proved that 12% for just a ridiculously simple store is a loss. Seriously their most simplest store that didn’t even have wish lists in the beginning is operating at a loss by only taking 12%. So Apple taking more is not a big issue.
