Joe Rogan looked into the camera and told his fans it will be free on Spotify.

If you have to pay $10/month... that will be a huge mistake.

Spotify has free ad-supported accounts and paid premium accounts. I doubt a decade-old free podcast would immediately go behind a paywall.

Plus... the article said Spotify is working with an ad agency to sell ads alongside the show. So, to me, it sounds like it will available to free accounts (and premium users wouldn't get ads)

You know, he seems like a really straight shooter, and while, yeah, he may have been swayed by a $50M paycheck (hahaha, wouldn't many of us :D), if he says this, I believe him.

Thank you Spotify

for hours and hours of free time I get from this next year.

The beginning of the end for podcasting. The medium has steadily been subverted... can't listen to anything without someone selling me viagra pills or manscaping equipment..

I see what you're saying...

But while you're listening to podcasts for fun... for the podcaster it's a job. If they weren't making money from ads... they wouldn't be making podcasts.

Yes... I'm also sick of underwear ads in my podcasts. But they're FREE. So it's a tradeoff I'll happily make.

Please, God, don't let podcasting turn into another monthly fee like Netflix, Hulu, Disney, Peacock(?), etc... :p

I'd prefer listening to nut-shaver ads and have podcasting survive... rather than podcasting charge monthly fees and have them disappear.

Fragmentation culture is the worst. This isn't even an Apple versus Spotify thing to me it just sucks period. I hate the new normal.

My podcasts are carefully curated and live in one place (my podcast app, which happens to be Overcast).

I’m not even a potential customer for any podcast that isn’t available in the place I go for my podcasts.

thanks for this. If Spotify wants me to listen to podcasts in their app, they need to at least get their playback stack to the level of Pocket Casts/Overcast (smart speed/playback)

Yeah, until the Spotify advertisers don’t like a certain topic or view that Joe or one of his guests has and is deemed not “brand safe” anymore. He has had guests on that have literally talked about the same exact thing happening to them. Haha. Sad he sold out. Good luck.

I mean they ANYTHING other than stuff like that. I mean what the hell do 20 something year olds need viagra for? I guess that's a question for another forum 😅.

Don't forget, Joe Rogan is 52. I'm sure he's done this with a view to retirement, so doesn't necessarily care if his reach diminishes because people don't want multiple Podcast apps.

He's probably got another 5 years max doing this, his popularity is bound to organically decline, and he can just walk off into the sunset a very rich man, and Spotify gain very little in the ultra-long term.

To me, it’s not a “podcast” if it’s exclusive to a certain platform.

Please Bill Burr, do not make your Monday Morning podcast exclusive to anyone...

Spotify is a terrible platform for podcast hosting. Shows that have gone exclusive, I’ve just stopped listening to.

It was guaranteed that this would happen at some point with podcasts. The best thing about podcasts was they were app independent, as they get tied to platforms I won't be listening anymore.

Same. If I can't get it in Apple's podcast app, I won't bother to listen.

Spotify has signed a deal to pluck comedian Joe Rogan's hugely popular podcast The Joe Rogan Experience from Apple's Podcasts library as part of a multi-year deal.

Spotify's deal with Rogan means that video and audio of each episode will be listed on Spotify from September 1, with an agreement to make the show exclusively available to Spotify subscribers sometime later in the year, according to a press release.
The announcement is a clear signal that Spotify sees its push into podcasts as a long-term commitment. The Joe Rogan Experience is one of the longest-running shows and often dominates Apple's podcast charts. Last year the show was said to have reached about 190 million downloads a month.

In addition to the podcast angle, The Joe Rogan Experience also clocks up massive view counts on YouTube, with a recent interview with Tesla CEO Elon Musk generating more than 13 million views so far. Other high-profile interviewees have included Senator Bernie Sanders, author Sam Harris, and cosmologist Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

Spotify says that Rogan will retain creative control over his show, but didn't reveal how much it paid to clinch the deal. In an audio message accompanying the press release, Rogan said: "It will be the exact same show. I will not be an employee of Spotify." Spotify said it will also work with an ad agency to jointly sell ads alongside the show.

Spotify first began its efforts to enter the podcast field around three years ago, when it said it was "coming after" Apple with a strong push into podcasts. The last few years have been marked as a so-called golden age for podcasts, causing many companies to look into entering the field.

More signs of Spotify's intention to double down on its podcasts offering were relayed last year, shortly after it acquired several podcast creation companies including Gimlet Media for $300 million.

Spotify said it planned to create new and exclusive podcasts for subscribers, and also revealed that the team that developed its Discover Weekly algorithms was working on a discovery engine for podcasts. Spotify also purchased Anchor, a company that lets users record and create their own shows that can be easily shared online.

I just don’t want to have more then three apps to listen to my favorite podcasts. Free or not. I have YouTube premium so I don’t get interrupted. I hate adds and they know how to annoy their audience. I have apple +. It’s just getting too saturated

This is the same thing that happened with Last Podcast on the Left and all of the other shows on their network. Regardless of it being free my issue is that I don't use Spotify for music and I feel that their app is trash when it comes to Podcasts. Pocket Casts has been my go to and very annoyed that I have to use 2 different apps to listen to this stuff. Plus the adds suck now. I enjoyed listening to Ben, Henry and Marcus read ads, especially Henry.

I tried to follow LPOtL over to Spotify, but since I don’t get updates in my main podcast app about new episodes, I tend to forget. It has meant I listen to less of their material now. Kinda hate the change tbh.

Rogan is an idiot for taking whatever deal they made.

Staying independent is what made podcasts great and Joe could have made more from staying like that.
Well considering Spotify paid like $250m for the Ringer, and almost certainly paid more for Rogan, and I doubt he has to split that with too many people, so... yeah, i think he did OK.

I still have yet to listen to a podcast on Spotify. I get that they want to increase their footprint in podcasts, but I'm really not a fan of them attempting to recommend a show I might like. When I open the Spotify app, I want to listen to music, not podcasts. Just my $.02.

Yup. It’s been weeks and weeks since I have listened to them.

Podcasters - if you don’t make it easy for me, I will probably forget about you and stop listening. It’s not like there is any shortage of similar content out there.

Finally. I can get rid of Apple’s Podcast app and have everything in one place.

Nearly all the other podcasts I listen to are already on Spotify.

I can now get off iTunes/Music across all platforms.

Where are all of the people decrying this monopolistic behavior? Wasn't Spotify complaining about exclusives etc being monopolistic?

Is the podcast world very slowly becoming the new TV world where you need a gazillion different subscriptions to get all shows? Will I need 5-10 different podcast players in a few years?

Crazy that a single podcast made the Spotify stock jump 8% yesterday. I read rumors about Joe getting 100 million bucks for the deal.
Just watch it on Youtube if you actually care (though I doubt you do).

The full shows will be leaving Youtube by the end of the year. That's part of the "exclusivity" with Spotify.

Only clips will be available on the JRE Youtube channel... probably with ads saying "watch on Spotify!" :p

Wasn’t this regarding the App Store ‘monopoly?’ & Apple not allowing Spotify to put a ‘Sign up to Spotify’ button in their own app due to them not paying 10/30/n% of their entire monthly subscriptions for a few measly TBs of hosting bandwidth and some non-optional App Store exposure? Forgive my ignorance if not.
