Which is not unique to AirPlay2. The problem is, everyone has their own technology: Spotify Connect, Chromecast, AirPlay, there are others. In a consumer-centric world, there would be one all-encompassing standard. But there isn't. And let's be honest, any audio equipment worth its salt supports a bunch of them. Hell, my 10 year old budget Denon receiver does.

If you use Spotify, you already have choices within the App for casting, including multicasting. Hence my previous message: This is manufactured rage over a margin feature.
Thanks. I didn’t ask.

I don’t personally use Spotify so don’t fully understand the issue. Doesn’t AirPlay work through system audio? So you can just select it from control center to airplay from Spotify?

YES. There are barely any devices that natively support Apple. Sonos does and a small handful of others, but I have several audio components around the house that support native streaming from a variety of apps and Apple Music doesn't work with any of them. Even some of the higher-end streamers you can buy...no Apple :/

This really is such a great feature to have because it makes streaming not-reliant on your phone. Hit "Play," close out the app, turn off your phone if you want...music still plays and it isn't draining your phone with an AirPlay stream.

But!
Spotify can be ”remote controlled" for example in the sense that it's controlled from an iPhone and then the audio is played back from Spotify from a computer with a good quality DAC, amp and speakers?

Why can't Apple nor Tidal do that yet? Would be perfect for such services that offer lossless audio quality.
Not that I care that much anymore since I in April last year got tinnitus and a bit of hearing-loss in my left ear. :(

I left Spotify a few months ago for Apple Music after years of being with them. There is no excuse for this laziness. Apple Music has been great, so Spotify join the league of Dropbox and loss custom and Apple gain.

I suffer from tinnitus as well but I forget about it most of the time. I rarely go to bed without earbuds in playing something so I suspect that’s why I feel like I don’t have it anymore sometimes.

It’s maddening otherwise.

One bug in particular: my iPhone volume is regularly MAXED OUT when I have Spotify open and playing on my MacBook. Yup, the Spotify iOS app takes control of the iPhone overall volume even though I am not playing music on the iPhone. This happens on a daily basis and damages my ears.
I don't think this is a bug as much as it's bad UX.

This happens (for me) if I have Spotify desktop player open. The volume on that devices "syncs" with my iPhone's volume, so in addition to change songs via Spotify connect, I can also change the volume. It's so stupid and the only way to stop it is to force quit Spotify on my iPhone and not open it when listening on desktop.

Correct me if i am wrong but isn't Spotify's complaint against Apple due to Apple not allowing Spotify access to certain API's which Spotify said they would need to have access to if they were to support Apple products 'natively'?.

lol so many words like "hate" ... honestly, people. MacRumors is trolling you for ad impressions and you're taking the bait. It's no one's business—no one—what music service you use. Apple Music? Awesome. Spotify? That's great. Amazon Music? Fine choice. Tidal? You rebel! Used CDs bought at Goodwill and ripped to your iPod? Old Skool!

Let billion dollar companies squabble like children. They don't need us to manufacture righteousness on their behalf.
But you did too ?

I'm unhappy with a few things about Spotify, but I also find that they do some things better than other music streaming services.

I strongly believe Apple shouldn't control every aspect of my digital live, so for that reason alone I'm staying on Spotify.

My computer is Apple, my phone is Apple, my headphones are Apple, my cloud provider is Apple, most of the apps I use are Apple. I really don't need my music to be supplied by Apple, too. It's important to keep some competition going. I'm not happy with everything Spotify is doing, but they would have to f8ck up a lot more than they do to make me switch to Apple Music.

I've been AirPlaying Spotify for years and it works great. What would AirPlay 2 support bring to the table? Maybe they just don't see it as necessary.
I mean, the article says what AirPlay 2 brings to the table. So there is that.

I tried to cancel my subscription a few days ago after 3 years. Tired of waiting for HiFi that they announced last year. Their customer service reps don't have any info on HiFi or AirPlay2, and they have not announced anything, so as the poster above mentioned looks like vaporware. Pretty poorly run company, so I decided i can live without them. Have Apple, & Tidal for my Roon setup. Only you can't cancel from within the app. Another fail. Says you have to contact customer support to cancel. Been busy but I will get to it this weekend. I'm done with them.
