I am surprised that nobody mentions the lots of devices where Apple Music doesn't work or even plans to cater to.

This only proves how popular spotify is actually.

LOL. That can't exactly be very many. Such a humongous success this Homepod was, Apple cancelled it because they were scared of too much success!
"HomePod" includes both the OG HomePod and the HomePod mini, which has increasingly become more mainstream.

The percentage of users dumping Spotify due to lack of Home Pod support is a rounding error.

In fact, Spotify has increased subscribers.

This is totally a slow news day story
I have no doubt that Spotify have many more subscribers than Apple Music and that they won’t be effected by the relatively small number of HomePod users who cancel their subscriptions. However I wonder how many of those 172 million subscriptions are paid as opposed to free.

Spotify knows the potential number of Spotify users who own a HomePod and would actually leave their service over this is small enough not to care. That’s not to say they won’t implement full support at some point, but they also know that Apple is not always in the driving seat, nor are some very vocal Apple customers who may be more in the minority than they realize.

Is this a joke? If all 100 HomePod owners cancel their non-existent Spotify subscriptions nobody is going to notice.

“Several Customers” ?

Well, all 40 HomePod users cancelled their Spotify subscriptions. This is a huge blow to the streaming service.

I understand that some people like or dislike Homepods and/or Apple Music and/or Spotify, but what am I missing here regarding the amount of homepods out there?

Quick search, so to take it as desired, but if there are only 100 new homepods in 2Q2021, then there were only 170 new google ones and 137 new Amazon’s ones. Still quite below but definitely comparable, same order of magnitude at least… if it is a great business for Spotify to be on Amazon’s and Google’s smart speakers then could totally be good business on Apple’s ones too.

Or maybe ~2.5M new smart speakers in Quarter in the US isn’t enough. Didn’t do a deeper search but world wide what I find is that google for the same quarter is at around 17.5% of the market share while Apple is at close to 10%.

Or maybe it should be 1000 pages or 10000 pages of Spotify user comments instead of 100 for it to be worthwhile?

The HomePod is one of the worst things Apple has made with it being so locked down. HOWEVER!!!!!!!!!! I believe Apple will release a HomePod 2 with 3.5mm and at the very least Bluetooth support. I think Apple have shown to be opening up a bit because people are tired with being locked into their ecosystem. Why would you buy a HomePod over any other speaker unless you're an Apple fanboy? It's better to buy anything else which works with everything.

Apple Music user here.

At my small Asian grocery store, we stream Apple Music all day long from various ethnicities, such as Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, etc. Playlists seems to be updated frequently, so there's always something new being played. How is Spotify doing with non-Western (aka. "non-mainstream") playlists? Do they have as global a footprint as Apple Music seems to be achieving? Yes, no?

I can't stand listening to the same "hit" songs over and over and over again. There's a massive catalog of international (aka. non-English) songs that most Westerners never take the time to enjoy.
Just wondering, have you obtained the proper license to play music in your retail establishment? Depending where you are, you can face serious fines for playing copyrighted music from a personal device in such a setting.

This is true. Man I love Spotify. I’ve had it for 7 years. For a while I had both Apple
Music and Spotify but I got tired of waiting for the lossless ability and HomePod support. So I finally canceled it last month out of frustration. While the algorithm for finding new music is better on Spotify, Apple Music has so many features that outdo them now.

If they add lossless, Dolby Atmos, and HomePod I would totally switch back.

I'm really surprised that everybody seems to miss what is the most important point of this story, in my opinion anyway: Spotifiy cried foul and complained everywhere they could that Apple would not letting them use Siri, then that Apple would not let them be on HomePod/HomePod mini. But when Apple gives them what they wanted, they don't take it.
Speaks a lot about the company and its motives for me…

4400+ upvotes, and these are just from user aware of this spotify idea, so the number is most likely much higher in user wanting the feature :)

I would welcome it, I love the homepods (max RIP version) and the mini's, and we have 6 of them in our home.

I cancelled Spotify for Beats back in the day because Beats was better. I havent looked back. ??‍♂️

Some of us are invested in HomeKit, and having HomePods spread around the house, vastly improve performance and responsiveness. Therefore it is inconvenient that Spotify is incompatible with HomePods. The switch to Apple Music was a no brainer for me in that regard.
Fortunately, HomeKit is not dependent on HomePods. HomePods are a failure - one easy way to identify those is to see if an Apple product has very limited geographic availability. Such as HomePods, where the main version was just discontinued and the cheaper version is just available in a couple of markets.

I use HomeKit extensively (AppleTV hub), but I already have a better sound system that also works with HomeKit (Sonos).

Sonos speakers offer more bang for the buck (especially with their outstanding IKEA variants) and support everything under the sun (including Apple Music!) I’m surprised anyone buying a HomePod isn’t already fully locked into Apple’s ecosystem and has Apple Music anyway.

That said, Spotify’s personal playlists blow anything Apple offers out of the water. And I could see someone wanting that on a HomePod. Alas.
Huh. I always liked Apple Music much better than Spotify

Everyone talking about how much of a flop the HomePod was and the small the user base of the HomePod is correct, but what you people are forgetting is the HomePod Mini. The reason the original HomePod failed was that it was significantly more expensive than the competitors, such as Google Home, Amazon Echo/Dot, and various Sonos speakers. The HomePod Mini, on the other hand, solves this issue by lowering the price significantly compared to the original HomePod, while having sound and support that is on par or exceeds the competition. However, the user base of the HomePod Mini is much larger than the user base of the original HomePod. Spotify support on the HomePod ecosystem, (OG HomePod and Mini), is actually a large issue for consumers. So, the fact that people have been saying the HomePod user is base is so small, therefore rendering the issue of Spotify support as a non-issue, is just incorrect.

It's going to take a lot more than lack of HomePod support to get me to use what is arguably the worst streaming service out there in terms of UI and music suggestion algorithm: Apple Music.

serious question as I’m considering gifting my father a HomePod mini and he uses Spotify. If he sets up the HomePod in for example the living room, wouldn’t he still be able to tell Siri on his iPhone “play X album in living room”? I have a Sonos beam in my living room and can do just that (but I have Apple Music). Or can’t you make iPhone Siri use Spotify as the main music source?

Not a big deal as i mainly use my HomePod minis as my Apple TV speakers. I use Spotify purely on my phone or ipad. I think for most this is a non issue.

I am aware that HomeKit is not dependent on HomePods. It just seems like a better idea to extend the ‘coverage’ with HomePods rather than AppleTVs. Even though I live in county where HomePods are not sold by Apple, I can still get them and they are not thst expensive, considering the sound quality (compared to speakers of that size).
