The Mac Rumors community has pleasantly surprised me this morning. I was expecting a lot of conspiracy theories from both sides about either Apple crippling Spotify or Spotify trying to hurt Apple Safari use. Seems most people are taking it at face value that Widevine is not supported in Safari. There is hope! :)

Wow, Spotify is stupid; I'm sure there's a lot of people (like me) that would rather just switch to another music service rather than give up the power efficiency of Safari.

No, there aren't. Just look at the marketshare of Chrome vs Safari. Odds are if you signed up for Spotify (vs Apple Music), then you'd just use the App/Chrome to continue to use Spotify.

Well Spotify might be stupid, or, they might have actually looked at usage logs for their service, and come to a conclusion (based on actual data, not pure conjecture like yourself) that the number of affected customers is a smaller loss the the gain they are making by dropping this support (some technical or developmental gains which are speculated upon by this article)

..or people will look at an alternative streaming service.

For a lot of music fans the only difference between these services is their accessibility.

Actually it's user interface and music selection .

Music selection being a major issue, as you need to own multiple services if your music selection is wide

Their loss.

Install another browser. Issue solved .

Most people use the app anyway . Non event

I gave up on safari about 5 months ago. I've used it since it came out in 2003 but I finally switched to chrome. I do not miss it at all. To be honest I dont even think about it because chrome does not get in my way like safari did. Everything works.

I can see why Spotify would also give up on it because after 14 years of using it i did as well.

Spotify still supports more web browsers than Apple Music.

Frankly, I never even knew it worked on Safari at all -- I rarely use Spotify in the browser unless I'm on my Chromebook or someone else's machine on which I can't / don't want to install the desktop client, and in that case, I always fire up Chrome. I was always with the impression that it only worked under Chrome in the first place.

And this is why Spotify will still be my number 1 music player. I want access on all my devices (from my iPhone to my roku to my desktop at work to my Echo in the kitchen)
Playing music on an Echo through Spotify doesn't work if the music didn't come from Spotify. I have a several dozen jam sessions recorded by my late father, and when I tried to play those tracks on Spotify through Spotify Connect, they won't play. They only play on my iPhone or Mac with the official app. Don't have this problem with Apple Music.

TimMAY! What have you done now? :(

And no, it might be a minor loss for Spotify, but it's a big embarrassment for Apple because one again it solidifies the common opinion that Apple products are not compatible with industry standards. That might not be true, but optics are everything.

Just use the Mac app......why would anyone want to use a web player??

....because I'm not always on my Mac or a macOS computer. :). Sometimes, I'm on my Chromebook, or another person's machine, which may or may not be a Mac, and in which case it may or not be acceptable for me to install an app.

I prefer using the Spotify application on OSX so it doesn't matter if Safari doesn't support the web browser. However, I think Spotify said it would end support of the app on my Snow Leopard (OS10.6) iMac in the near future. No biggie. I'll be getting a new Apple computer by early next year.

Apple doesn't understand the microcosm of music. People don't want it walled into a private garden that you can only access with a handful of devices.
Except I can play Apple Music on all the devices I listen to music on, so... Guess your use case isn't universal, or something?

If a Spotify is a die-hard Safari user, Spotify risks that user paying for another streaming server.

If a die-hard Spotify user decides to switch to Chrome, Apple doesn't really lose any monetary value.

This is a lose-lose for Spotify IMO.

Let's see.

They would be using the Spotify app. Remember Apple Music support zero browsers..... so Spotify are really not going to lose all those people that need a web player to apple, are they.

In your scenario Apple does not gain anything. As it does not support safari themselves .

And what is wrong in continuing using Safari AND downloading a dedicated MacOS or iOS Spotify app?

Why would you use the safari player , when the mac app is even more power efficient ?

If power Efficiency is your goal....iTunes is a world of pain..... especially off a mac...
