This is terrible...My buddy's 4S (Sprint) vs my AT&T...I thought Sprint has been proud of their "True Unlimited" plans but it sounds like it's because their customers will never BE ABLE to get past 2GB

Sprint rents the towers for roaming when you are off network.

Its not renting towers at all... its a roaming agreement. They just get access to the Verizion network.

What annoyed me about that is AT&T got blamed for most of it and yet the entire problem was an Apple generated problem.

I would like to see some proof one way or the other, few speed test from Sprint iPhone and an Android phone running on Sprint 3G side by side. That way you remove signal problems and using different phones.

Fact that leads me to believe this is an Apple problem is I do not remember reading the complaints from other phones on Sprint's network. It was only when the iPhone came out that we see theses complaints.

get ready to be downrated by Apple fans, how dare you say anything bad about next coming (iSteve) :)

It's Sprint. Apple doesn't control internet speed on their devices. It is sprint plain and simple. Sprint is a control monger. They are suffering losses and they are trying to control how much data is being transferred to stop brown outs of their data network witch would force them to build more towers to handle the load. Verizon should buy Sprint and desolve it into their company. Plain and simple.

So you're saying without a shadow of a doubt that you know its Sprint and couldn't in any way be a firmware issue or incompatibility with some base station gear? I suspect its a little of both because I get perfectly fine speeds that top out at times at 2.3mbit and usually hover around 1mbit. But others aren't so lucky. If their is a bug in the iPhone 4S CDMA firmware it could cause all phones on the cell or in the area to degrade too. So don't rule that out either.

You know it's apples to oranges comparison right?
If you went from iPhone 4 to iphone 4S, and switched networks, it would be a much more interesting comparison. Thing is, you are comparing a 3GS(!) to 4S on different network. I would be willing to bet you that with an iphone 4 on the same network, you would have gotten similar improvements in performance. Fact is around H-Town, AT&T is very fast. And with their LTE up and traffic starting to migrate there, the 3G traffic will lower and have less congestion.

yes, my wife went from 4 (ATT) to 4s(verizon). we both work in the medical center and moved to Houston recently. its very common knowledge that AT&T does not penetrate hospital walls! period.... it rarely ever works in the operating rooms and almost impossible to work anywhere in the basements in the hospitals ( MRI ) locations. So even texting is out of question, forget making calls and checking on the spouse. So when you get paged to an external number you cant use the frikkin hospital phones to answer the long distance acalls ( stupid hostpial policy) and ,hey your frikkin ATT phone aint worth a piece of crap. so with your attt super smart phone, connect to wifi, sign friikkin user agreement of the hospital to join wifi, login to skype or iCall then make a call....whew....
what a pain...

so ""fact around htown,"" at&t can be fast as lightning but if i spend 10-12 hours at work with no service, att is worthless for me

So coming to your question. Yes, now we have verizon and it works in the med center at UT within campus and at BCM too!!!....Speed comparison, we went from calls not working, intenet not avlbl at work, no texting to "avlbl".....and the 4s because of being a faster device is more responsive.

What i am most peeved about AT&T is that they would not waive a 30 dollar ETF despite being a customer for 8 years....

Then I stand corrected. I only remember it being called TDMA here in the US.

The terms are pretty meaningless these days.

People say "CDMA" to mean two things, the CDMA radio system and the Qualcomm family of CDMA standards (cdmaOne and cdma2000, including EV-DO) that are used by Verizon and Sprint.

People say "GSM" to mean both the original 2G GSM standard, which used a TDMA radio interface, and the various 3G standards (HSDPA, HSPA+) that were added to it, which use CDMA radio interfaces.

"Now it seems that an internal email has been sent to Sprint representatives, informing them that Apple and Sprint are working together on a "confirmed nationwide issue" dealing with the slow data rates many users are experiencing."

translation: Apple has a hot poker up our ass, and we're motivated to fix our crappy network.

Oh God, where to start?

First of all, for most users the data is very good. I myself have been enjoying my 4s on Sprint, A LOT. It is much faster than my 3Gs on AT&T. Not once did it stall or get stuck.

It is possible that the combination of the iPhone on the Sprint network is what's causing the issue with data speeds. You are very naieve to think that the iPhone working well on AT&T means that it is Sprint network's fault. How do you explain that some older 3G phones are working well on Sprint? It is possible, in fact likely, that the combination of the two is what's causing this problem. The fact that the problem is inconsistent amongst users further supports this hypothesis.

I just don't understand the attitude. You should thank your lucky stars Sprint still exists, even if you are on Verizon or AT&T. If Sprint is gone your monthly bill will be higher.

If their is a bug in the iPhone 4S CDMA firmware it could cause all phones on the cell or in the area to degrade too. So don't rule that out either.

If such a bug exists, why wouldn't it also affect Verizon devices? Verizon operates a number of markets on the PCS-band only (just like Sprint). I suspect Verizon uses the same equipment at some of their sites as Sprint does too.

I left Sprint in April after getting fed up with their data speeds. At my office I would get good speeds. At just about every other location around Phoenix I would regularly get speeds identical to what iPhone users are reporting on Sprint (0.15 down, 0.02 up) with my Samsung Epic.

Voice is fine - data sucks in LA (los angles - not sure if you are refering to louisiana. I've tested in Brentwood, downtown, Culver City, Century City, Pacific Palisades, Malibu and Gardena - I never exceeded 500k down. I average about 300k down and 100 k up. 4G never stays connected for long but the max speed I EVER got on 4G when it stayed connected was 800k - complete rubbish!

I did mean Los Angeles. I've been getting 500-1.2k consistently on my 4s. I just ran it right now and got 960k.

Chances are any issues encountered with Verizion have already been worked around in the modem firmware. While new issues probably creep in when talking to a completely different network their could exist even more newer incompatibilities.

Sprint is slow with refunds for cancelled orders too

Decided I did not want my Sprint iPhone 4S within the 14 day trial period. So a week after they received the unopened iphone back and closed my account, I'm told I must wait until at least the end of November for a refund by 'check' due to the generation a "Final" bill.

And I have to keep calling to request this too.

:mad::mad::mad:

I have never ever dealt with such a crappy company and/or refund system in my entire life.

Yes, I had to really push Apple back in 1999 to get a replacement iMac because the 3rd party repair place was purposely dropping the ball. I had some annoying refund issues with Apple last year, but it was all resolved within a week or two. That's fine, but 6 weeks later? BS.

It's obscene I have to wait 6 weeks after Sprint resold that iphone for my refund by check.

Thanks for nothing Sprint.

I hope everyone who has Sprint is happy.

As for me, I learned. I will not be impressed by the carrot dangling in front of my schnozz.

Just wanted to warn folks if you don't like...and to vent.

Rolls off soap box and back under desk.

I'm returning mine today. Because of your post, I've already alerted American Express about it.. they said if Sprint gives me shenanigans, they'll take care of them.

What a sham.

Offering unlimited data is possible, I have it in the UK, with speeds of a whole load faster than 0.15 mbps :)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

I have to agree. They have to know that if they don't get this fixed real soon they're finished. In fact I even had a supervisor at Sprint make that very remark last night when I called them.
I just see how any way that Sprint can let this one go and stay in business. They will HAVE TO fix this

I got my refund to my CC within a couple of days. I haven't received a final bill from Sprint but I did receive a welcome to Sprint letter 2 days ago (a week after canceling).

I'm rather curious how people are getting their speeds, are they doing these speed tests from one location like their basement or in elevators?

People need to do over-all speed tests like once every mile, they also should indicate whether they live in an urban city to do speed tests. My Sprint 3g is fine where I am, and for people depending on 3g as their main internet, well - let's just say Wifi-connected DSL/Cable/etc is always going to be faster. I do notice when I compared it with Tmobile, it was always 50% slower, but I'm giving Sprint a chance since they are probably having a flood of Iphone people from those some who seem to want it all.

I know plenty of people who live in crap areas or when Iphone came to AT&T where they sucked it up because their main internet was wifi.

Did a PRL update and wow

Previously I was only getting low 0.1 Mbps down/up. After running the ##UPDATE# twice I'm now getting 1.5Mbps down / 0.85Mbps up. I hope it stays this way. :)

Sprint users here with no iPhone.

3G speeds are fine as normal...makes me think its more an issue with the device to be perfectly blunt.
