I can also confirm the $10 smartphone fee will be added and is not factored into the information provided by Sprint on the FP.

If you call a customer service rep and ask them for pricing details they will confirm the $10 fee will be added.

Here's how I see it for pros of each company.

ATT
Pros:
Possibly faster internet speed
4gb iphone plan includes tethering at no additional cost.
Tons of discounts. Student discounts, bank discounts, employee discounts etc.
Unlimited mobile to mobile calling included with unlimited texting plan.

Cons:
High cost if individual plan. Expect to pay $100+ per month for reasonable data.
4gb data cap. then $10 per gb over.
Discount only applies to extra services, not to main part of plan so the initial $39.99 is not discounted.

Verizon
Pros:
Highest rated call quality in most major cities. Good 3g coverage in remote areas.
5gb data plan for iPhone is only $5 more than Att 4gb data plan.

Cons:
Also high cost. Expect to pay $100+ per month for individual plan.
Not as many discounts as other networks.
Reported slower data speeds consistently by iPhone usars (heresay)
No unlimited mobile to mobile calling plan.

Sprint
Pros:
Most bang for your buck.
Unlimited mobile to mobile calling, texting and data with no data caps.
CDMA call quality generally good with good coverage.
Good 3g coverage with use of Verizon towers during roaming.
Discounts available such as Credit union discount, employee discount etc.

Cons:
There is a data roaming cap and minute usage cap. Can't remember offhand but its something like 200 minutes and 500mb data. Watch out!
With $20 billion invested in iPhones, its possible they won't be building up towers any time soon.
Average data speeds around 1mbps. Some occasions faster but usually not.
Tethering costs an additional $29.99 and will also put a cap on your data usage at 5gb regardless if phone is tethered or not. Not sure what happens after 5gb.

Let me know if I missed anything.

AT&T PRO: Data and Voice Multitasking, over 25,000 free Wifi Hotspots, known "devil".

Verizon and Sprint CON: Data OR Voice (must pick one at a time), Sprint network "not proven" for anticipated traffic levels.

Cons:

macguy, where did you get that info about the cap on data usage? I know there was a rumor a few weeks ago, but I haven't read anything directly from Sprint about it and the Sprint reps I talked to insist that there is no cap on data either from the hotspot or just regular phone usage. Now, I wouldn't be surprised if they changed that in the future, but as of now, according to Sprint, there is no data cap.

And where are you getting the average data speeds from? I'm sure they vary from area to area, but in New York City, I have found my data speeds on Sprint run rings around the data speeds I was getting on AT&T. And I easily get more than 1mds on a regular basis. In fact my speed is fast enough that I cancelled my home internet service and just tether off of my phone.

Of course the speed thing does depend wildly from one city/town to the next. I'm just wondering where you got the information from that Sprint in general averages around 1mbps.

anyone know of a reliable website that compares service of the major carriers in a particular area?

I had good service with AT&T in NYC when I last had an iPhone (3G), Verizon is great here. No idea how good Sprint is though.

Sprint roams on Verizon's network. Sprint doesn't charge for roaming either. Your premium features like Sprint Nav and Sprint TV won't work, but you can use everything else... Just make sure you don't go over 300MB of data roaming consistently and you'll be fine.

With that said, wherever there is Verizon, you'll get Sprint service.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X; en_US) AppleWebKit (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile [FBAN/FBForIPhone;FBAV/3.5a;FBBV/3500;FBDV/iPhone3,1;FBMD/iPhone;FBSN/iPhone OS;FBSV/5.0;FBSS/2; FBCR/AT&T;FBID/phone;FBLC/en_US])

No text in this plan? What happened to the " true unlimited " carrier that always talks about giving all they can. Regardless I'm switching to them from AT&T but I thought it would be 69$ for unlimited data & SMS. Unless data in their eyes means web & SMS? Help anyone?

It's unlimited everything for $79 with 450 minutes for landline or $109 for unlimited everything.

Yes, it says $69 and $99, but that's only for dumb phones. Smart Phones cost $10 more.

What about the price structure for family plan with unlimited data?

$150 for 2 phones.

Here's how I see it for pros of each company.

.. snip..

Verizon had said a few weeks ago that they'd soon be selling a World iPhone, meaning dual mode GSM + CDMA. Turns out they were right.

My questions are:

1) Will AT&T continue to lock down the iPhones on their network, so that their customers still cannot use local SIMs outside the USA?

2) Will Verizon do as they usually do, and let their customers unlock the GSM side for using local SIMs when outside the USA? If so, buying from Verizon could be a smarter deal for people who travel a lot.

CDMA handsets cannot offer data services while you are on a call unless if you are connected to a Wifi network.

Or if the handset supports SVDO (Simultaneous Voice + EVDO 3G).

E.g. the HTC Thunderbolt.

Are we sure the MOBILE TO MOBILE is accross all phone networks and not just mobile to mobile on sprint?

Does anyone know this for sure?

It's mobile to ANY mobile. The 450 minutes only counts towards land lines. PLUS, you get nights starting at 7PM

Sprint still uses verizon towers ?

Sprint ROAMS on Verizon towers. You do not get charged for roaming, but they do have a limit on how much you can roam before they warn you that they'll kick you off their network for roaming too much.

Couple questions

1) Do long text messages (i.e. more than 160 characters) get combined into a single message (in order too) on Verizon/Sprint?

On ATT it combines them nicely on my iphone, though tmobile texts come through weird.

2) Can you send SMS and use voice at the same time on Verizon/Sprint?

I hope Sprint continues to update their network. It's so slow here, that unlimited data is pretty much useless.

Yea. Here in ATL, you get Sprint 4G either at the airport and downtown. Both of which everyone avoids like the plague anyway. Go out to the burbs where most of the 6 mil people live, and it drops off to prehistoric speeds. The general rules of thought for cell companies:

1) Verizon's got the best wireless net, but no-one can stand their cust service. Make a late payment and they'll report you to the credit bureau. Typical New Yorkers.
2) ATT has mediocre coverage, but just a bit better than Sprint. On the other hand, those stalwarts at ATT have the BEST cust service on the planet. With enough patience they'll give you anything you want.
3) Sprint's unlimited this and that, but you'll find the nearest tower is 2 counties away. So it doesn't matter. Besides, their idea of 4G isn't well, it ain't 4G.
4) TMobile - everybody's gun shy ever since they pulled the ole' sneak-play-number-53 by killing your account when your unlimited data plan went above 2GB. Lost 61% of their cust base on that one, gave the ole' CEO a bonus. shhhhhhh
5) The others, almost all of them urban. yawwwn

That $10 is only charged if you have a 4G device. iPhone 4 & 4S are both 3G

Incorrect sir. Currently in my Sprint cart is a "iPhone 4 8GB (Pre-order)" and also this: Premium Data add-on (Required for this device) $10.00

Your information may have been correct at one point, but it is no longer true.

Also, Sprint's site is running very slow. Seems anecdotally that they are getting lots of interest.

Don't hate me! I pay About $100 per year.

Of course this is on T-mobile prepaid and I usually use less than 15 minutes voice on my "dumb" phone per month. No idea how many SMS messages I send / receive, but can't be too many.

Having said this, I'm thinking about getting the '4S. It's only money;)

1. That is not a carry issue to solve. To the carrier they still send 2 SMS's to your phone. Your phone is what figures it out that it is one long message and combines it.

2. SMS does not use data but the standby signal for the phone which is unaffected by voice calls. so yes you can

Crazy! This is ether bad business or they are hiding something. Why would not start tell everyone that you are now offering the iPhone. Look at At&t and Verizon. Go to there website and one of the first things you will see is "Get your iPhone 4s". So where's Sprint? I even got a email from Ebay telling me to sell me old phone so I can get a the new iPhone. Again i ask where is Sprint. Go to there website and it say nothing. If it did not say it on Apple's website "coming soon" i would think it was just a big joke.

I agree that they should have taken the liberty of saying something or at least putting something on the website. But I was thinking about it and remembered they have an event this friday october the 7th talking about where they are looking to go in their company for the rest of this year and next year. I would say that this is when they will be heavily covering the topic of iPhone!

I will definitely have to consider going to sprint, I have an unlimited plan but don't want my service throttled either if I consume to much bandwidth in any given month.
