EDIT: I must have misunderstood the rep last night as today I have read that the 5GB data cap is for tethering.
Look, cell companies simply can't handle wire based internet loads. Phase 1:
They keep speeding up their radio connect speeds making the service MUCH more appealing, but not their infrastructure [backhaul] capacities. In turn we all jump on tethering as a primary service, which freaks out the cell providers, which kicks off phase 2:
Sprint, ATT and Verizon run up to congress with $20-30 mil in their briefcase and pay them pass a law where they can retroactively revoke pesky cell phone contracts like unlimited plans - which already having lured in millions of customers are no longer serve a purpose*. This kicks off phase 3:
Faster radio speeds are newly introduced, and the cycle starts again.
*until some new device is introduced, at which time "unlimited" is somehow re-introduced for a few months [this time they used Sprint as the fool]
The REAL place to be in this market is a phone manufacturer if you ask me. Hell, they can't do any wrong. Too slow? Cell company's fault. To expensive? chip maker's fault. Design sloppy/old? It's the gov'ts and Wall St's fault. Incompetent software? It's the developer's fault. Delayed/outdated software? It's the cell company's fault again.
What a world
