If you’re on Sprint do not buy the SIM Free iPhone X from Apple. It’s a giant pain to activate and you’ll be without a phone for at least 8-12 hours. You’ll have to wait for Sprint to reset the network overnight and the Apple sales reps are clueless about the network.
Just buy the Sprint branded phone. If you pay for it outright it will still be unlocked and it will still work on any other network.

At the Apple store they can reset the phone such that it can identify itself to the network again ding unlocked. I had to do this when I sold an iPhone X. Bought it outright prior to Sprints deal, then went to sell it and it had to be activated under my line and then released from the Sprint network. After having Sprint release it from my account, the Apple guy did some combination of button presses with the volume and power button and when it can back on it was unlocked.
