Is it LTE or Wifi

It's definitely LTE...I took a screenshot of it when I was at work. The speedtest was when I was in KC on LTE. In Wichita I get from 8 at the lowest (in poorer reception area) to 30 at the highest (1/2 mile east of my house). Average is 15.

Some serious good speeds...

:)

I detest sprint and their inability to upgrade their service. It's seriously a ripoff to pay for data when you get 26.6k modem speeds all the time.

I am so glad I left, now I just need my fiance to get off their stinking service. We would drive around and do speedtests against each other and where she gets 1mb down/up, I get about 30.

I havent seen her score higher than 1.5mb down/up. SPrint claims LTE is coming but I doubt it.

When we went to Cleveland she got a whopping 5 mb on LTE

Yeah I agree. Sprint is the carrier that seems to always be behind the curve. Always "upgrading" or promising improvements but always slow to deliver, if at all.

Well, I waited a year. Now I have this…

Move to Phoenix maybe?

Here is the thing. While 15/2 is decent and more than just usable. Its not impressive. I am seeing 40/5 or better on Verizon (5s) and even better on AT&T (iPad). Sprint LTE network is not even being loaded up yet - if that is all they pull at launch after upgrading the towers, I shudder what happens when everyone is on LTE. Of course they will build out 800mhz LTE to offset that, but it means yet another period of upgrades/delays.

So after 13 years, I am leaving sprint for Verizon - will miss the relationship and all my perks (though they are way diminished), but I realized a 6 or 8 gig Data Plan with high speed is better than unlimited at slow (or when LTE comes, average) speed.

Ehrm…I'm not arguing that it's impressive. It's not, in light of the speeds you see people here post frequently about Verizon and AT&T. But it's a far cry from this…

Which indicates that Sprint is building out. No, not as fast as I'd like and certainly not as fast as this whole f-ed up thing could have been had they bothered to do it right. But it is starting to show up.

That's what I have a problem with. I've been with them for 13 years or so as well and have been more than tempted to switch the family to Verizon or AT&T. Most of us use data all the time, whether on WiFi or not. We're not used to having to keep track of our data so we don't go over limit. With Sprint, we don't have to worry about any of that. Also, they're the cheapest. Get what you pay for though....

The key here though is with 15/2, he can do whatever he wants to on his phone comfortably. It's not like he is downloading torrents so being 40/5 or 15/2, streaming or pulling up websites will probably feel the same.

There's a big difference when you don't have to be constantly checking to see if you or your family is close to going over the data limit. Sprint doesn't have the best network, but if you are in an LTE market and your phone is working fine, it would be crazy to leave. You will understand if you ever compare phone bills.

My sprint iPhone 5 with LTE was usually about HALF the speed on my VZW iPhone 5 in the same location. I just ran this speedtest in a small ass Indiana town where my friend lives.
This is VZW btw

Sprint vs T-Mobile comparison: anyone have any experience? I hear rumors that T-Mobile is 2X as fast with LTE (in select markets of course) with unlimited everything and half the price of Sprint. True?

I agree to a limited extent.

If your use case fits within those needs, and saving a few bucks a month is important then Sprint is great. Same could be said about many solutions though, like Metro PCS, or a cordless telephone with a good range.

It all comes down to needs.

I was on T-Mobile in college and it was great to send text messages. Got AT&T when I got my first iPhone and it was great in Dallas. Then I started traveling and the sight of a building that wasn't in Dallas caused dropped calls or no data access. Then I switched to Verizon. I have had a total or three or four dropped calls in the past year, but trust me I pay for it.

If Sprint works for you and your needs absolutely have at it. Sprint isn't known for being the best network I the US, but for about $20-30 less (based off of last time I did the math for my needs) per month it could be outstanding in your region.

The important thing is your specific needs for your specific region.

I would tell anyone though that if they travel and need consistent coverage to be careful.

I'd hold out on tmobile for a year if I were in the market.

Tmobile is going through a lot of transitions, and I don't see it helping their #4 position. Sprint would probably give you very reliable 3G through out all of the US everywhere you go with a more consistent connection.

TMobiles coverage is really all over the place, and probably will be for probably another year. Do you know if their 3G coverage or speed is consistent?

Sprint should have been bought out by Verizon years ago.
""We're not interested in Sprint. We don't need them," Verizon Wireless CEO Daniel Mead told Reuters at the start of the CTIA Wireless Conference." -- March, 2011

Verizon bought Alltell in 2008, making their network the huge entity it is now. So this 2011 quote is pretty right on.

So my question to you is - Why? What possible value would Sprint have brought to Verizon?

All I can see is Verizon paying bundles of money with no appreciable benefit to Verizon.

Sprint has tons of spectrum that I don't think they have the capital to leverage. Verizon last I saw I think has stopped building out FIOS, so building out a strong and robust wireless network with Sprints additional spectrum could add a ton of value.

You are absolutely correct. But this is a reasoning that applies to 2012-2013.

The poster I was responding to had stated that this should have happened "years ago."

Years ago, Sprint didn't have these advantages. Years ago it was still trying to digest Nextel, which coincidentally had Verizon then tried to purchase Sprint it would have gotten along with Sprint's financial headache over it.

So, yeah, now Sprint is valuable in that sense. The problem now is that Masayoshi Son just paid billions for Sprint. I doubt he has any intent of letting Sprint go right now unless someone was to pay a considerable price for it.

Soooo basically if VZW had bought Sprint "years ago" they would have what Sprint currently is now... no?

No. What Sprint has now is a combination of Clearwire and Softbank and years of bad decisions.

Verizon would have gotten antiquated towers with little to no maintenance and Sprint customers. Verizon would have born the cost of upgrading the Network and dismantling Nextel. Sprint had already sold Clearwire part of the Nextel spectrum which Clearwire was using for WiMAX.

Don't know exactly what Verizon would have done but unless they chose to make the same poor, desperate decisions Sprint made the outcome would not be the same.

Also, Verizon would have been too big for Softbank to go after.

They both have similar spotty coverage. The main difference is that T-Mobile uses HSPA+ for 3G so when you're in non-LTE areas you'll still get speeds that are close to LTE with T-Mobile whereas Sprint's 3G is pathetic in comparison.

If I were in the market for a budget carrier then I would probably go T-Mobile. I personally have unlimited data with Verizon though so I'm not going anywhere.

It boggles my mind why anybody would have Sprint

Ok... Let me unboggle your mind for you. I've been with Sprint since 2004. I had to wait forever for the iPhone. It finally came and I got it... The 3G speeds were terrible, but hey it's unlimited ... Truly unlimited data... Then there were broken promises. .. Plenty of them, but I have stuck around this long. Why would I leave when I'm getting this:

I'm not saying it's the greatest speeds. I'm not even saying that AT&T doesn't have better speeds. I know they do, but my data is truly unlimited and at 25 Mbps down I can handle having Sprint.

It honestly boggles my mind as to why someone's mind would be boggled over what someone else does ... That's truly mind boggling

This on no ways means I'm a Sprint apologist because I'm not. They piss me off just as much as the next person , but I stay with them now because it's common to me... Nothing mind boggling about it

Exactly...

I would rather have 20 down 5 up unlimited then have 40down 10up capped at 5g.. If it was unlimited then fine, all those on grandfathered plans are lucky but for the rest of us that want to upgrade every year and keep our unlimited lte with out buying the phone outright sprint is just fine..
