This is where we are -- a lack of regulatory strength that doesn't hold business accountable. This is ONLY good for companies, and not consumers.

FTC, you have failed terribly.

I agree... it's a shame. Unfortunately, this at&t 5GE sham will probably win them more customers too.

Been an AT&T customer for a long time and they have generally been great for me. Their customer service, especially compared with Sprint (from 15 years ago) was the reason I switched. However, this kind of misleading crap just makes them look “shady” and dumb. Good for Sprint for calling them out. I am so tired of this world where facts have seemingly ceased to matter. If we say it’s 5G, it is, and the general, non-techy population won’t know the difference. Total BS!
Is it really worth to them to trick a few customers into switching??

Doesn’t Sprint anything better to do with their limited resources, like improving their third-rate network? They look so desperate. Merging with T-Mobile won’t help them much either between the major metro areas.

Oddly similar to Samsung's "QLED" televisions, which, to the unsuspecting, appears similar to "OLED". Of course, QLED has as much to do with OLED as "5GE" has to do with "5G', which is to say, nothing.

no...no...
I will appreciate the information it provides on my LTE phone. I am often in marginal LTE areas where I'm better off dropping to 4G. Then I'm in other areas where the signal, even at 1 bar, is LTE fast.

Having the 5GE symbol might help to let me know what's going on where.

And BTW, the ATT commercials do say that it is a step on the way to 5G. NOT that it's 5G.

Tricky, huh?

Companies are scum sometimes. Samsung is one of the scummiest.

Apple operates with a lock and key on all their products. Are they not able to stop AT&T from doing this? I could be wrong but I feel like Apple has a CSR to protect its customers from being misled.

What about Apple's Liquid Infinity display, which is still just LED?

Good on Sprint and bad on AT&T. The FCC should be putting a ban on calling it 5G. It simply isn’t, and is intentionally misleading.

That doesn’t mislead as to the material in use,as Samsung attempts to do with QLED v OLED. LCD is actually “liquid” for the L. Hard to say apple is being tricky there. But Samsung’s branded is pure deception, and I have seen it misunderstood by customers in Bestbuy.

I don't necessarily agree that Samsumg using QLED as done purely as a malicious attempt to fool and confuse consumers to sell more TV's. The "Q" stands for quantum-dot. It's an improved tech based on LED. It's not like they just put a random letter that looks like an "O" in front of LED just because.

"5G Evolution and the 5GE indicator simply let customers know when their device is in an area where speeds up to twice as fast as standard LTE are available."

That's not 5G, thats "4G+" or "LTX".

Plus. The one great thing about Tim Cook’s Apple is its ethics. We suffer garbage keyboards and lacking software for the ethics. Apple should stop this deceptive practice.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Ok.

Well, that's kinda exactly what they did. Samsung marketing said "Q is the letter that most looks like O, and we can trick people into thinking QLED is somehow similar to OLED...what can the Q stand for?....hmm, how about "Quantum"?!"

No, its LCD.
LED is the backlighting technology. By not mentioning LCD, and use Q for quantum to mean tiny (not quantum by definition) and tacking it on as QLED, they are absolutely attempting to confuse. If they marketed it as QLED-LCD then maybe.
But M for micro would be more descriptive.
MLED doesnt look as good.
Quantum roughly means the smallest possible. The quantum dots are small, but they arent the smallest possible. They dont emit one photon per dot, for example. The “quantum” layer uses a technology to both smooth out the LED BACKLIGHT brightness and de facto split it into colored light. So its marketing.
How many BestBuy employees can explain that?

I canceled my AT&T Wireless Service a month ago and just today canceled DirecTV Now even though I was on a grandfathered plan. The news that they are going up $10 per month and dropping the number of channels. Typical for AT&T! I will never do business with them again.

Sprint sucks and is in no position to call anyone out, but I am glad they did! T-Mobil and Verizon should join the suit, but they know they all have Skeltons in their closets.

How did AT&T have anything to do with iOS versions?

Or is this just a way of admitting that Apple is complicit in this immoral, and possibly illegal, deception without explicitly stating it?
Carrier updates are provided by the carriers. When a new version of ios comes out, carriers need to update as well. The update comes from the carrier and is loaded after reboot.

Except that they already tarnished the 4G branding by calling HSPA+ 4G. 4G+ in AT&T lingo would sound like something less than LTE, but better than HSPA+. AT&T really loves to make these messes, it seems.
HSPA+ is 4G according to 3GPP, so there's no way AT&T is at fault for that. 5GE, on the other hand, doesn't appear anywhere AFAIK.
[doublepost=1552370851][/doublepost]
And did any called out Sprint for advertising “4G” when in fact it wasn’t true LTE...they sure mislead a lot of customers.
4G does not mean LTE

For anyone wanting to switch to Sprint, they are still offering the one year free deal for up to five lines when you switch. Just make sure you port out in month 12 to avoid a $180 bill for 5 lines.

Where did they say that?

Walk into any electronics store worth its salt and ask what the difference between QLED and OLED is, and they'll tell you. It's not something anyone is trying to hide. And no one is going to see the price difference between your average QLED and OLED TV and mistakenly think they're the same technology or same quality.

Come on. :) It's not even comparable to what AT&T is doing.

If you want a hypothetical comparison to what AT&T is doing, that would be if Samsung released a 4K TV and referred to it as OLED-Q.
