Ok, I just called to get a DSU for my out of contract iPhone6. I was told that they could not unlock my phone because the over the air update could not be sent to my phone since it is not in contract. When I told him about the unlock policy, he said that there was nothing he could do. I am only out of contract because I was told earlier I needed to incur the ETF to have my phone unlocked for domestic use. I was going to keep asking about it but then we got "disconnected."

This is also after they tried to give me an MSL code (again) and also they told me they don't do domestic unlocks (referred them to their own policy).

Has anyone with an out of contract iPhone 6 successfully had a DSU?

I've talked to 3 different sprint reps. over the past few days about the DSU unlock and each one didnt know much or were just flat out telling me it wouldnt happen. This morning when I called to ask if my phone would recieve the ota update even though I am not on the sprint network, I was told as long as wifi is connected when apple sends the update out the phone will recieve it.

----------

The phone is 2 years old, so it's been clear of any contractual obligations.
I called Sprint and asked if they would unlock it for international use and 4 days later its working with a Verizon SIM.

Which model are you using?

Well it is the 19th, and I'm going to try a T-Mobile SIM today when im able to get my hands on one. This phone was bought outright.

I bought a straight talk activation packet which contains AT&T and T-Mobile sims, hopefully one will work

OK. I will note that, thanks!

I have a sprint iPhone 6 Model A1586 and after having being told many times it isn't compatible for the straight talk network or any other network besides sprint, I've got it working on the straight talk network.. not sure if this helps anyone

I just stated it was an iPhone 5, 16 GB White to be exact...

People, you and I both know Sprint hires bums in 3rd world countries for customer service. If you want your phone unlocked, say you want it INTERNATIONALLY unlocked. The activation policy for domestic and international unlock is the same, so it'll get unlocked either way.

Just trying to save you guys some trouble.

Submitted my iPhone 5 and my wife's iPhone 5 for international unlock about 10 minutes ago.

Hope this thing that makes it a complete unlock (domestic included) goes through.

I got the spiel about backing up, resetting and restoring the iPhone but my understanding is that that is not necessary.

Rep said this was an "unseen" over the air Apple update. I'm assuming that's Sprint speak for a new activation policy from the iTunes server.

Anyone know how long I should give this before I test a domestic SIM?

Took about 5 days to process. My experience with unlocking Sprint phones is if the unlock was successful when you put in the non-Sprint SIM for the first time it'll ask for your iCloud credentials(weird I know) after you put it in, your phone will then connect to the new network. You should get an email when the unlock completes, the email will say "This will not work with SIMs inside the U.S." but it's BS so ignore it.

I'm guessing this has to do with retrieving the new activation policy, the phone can't complete the SIM unlock process until you insert your new SIM and enter your iCloud credentials(you'll have an activation lock-esque screen pop up). No idea why, but that's how it was for my Sprint iPhone 5 and 6.

Keep in mind though if your iPhone was already internationally unlocked you may have to resubmit a request for an international unlock again to get the new international activation policy from Apple.

Don't ask for a DSU, just ask for an international unlock and ignore what the rep says about it not working inside USA, it will.

For reference, here's the email I got from Sprint.

So it was a background ota thing that goes unnoticed?

Only way to do it is to ask for an international unlock, but yea you won't know until you put your U.S. SIM in. You'll get an "Activation Required" message on your lock screen and if it asks you for iCloud details then you're unlocked.

In 15.5 years this is the first device I have ever owned with a SIM card on Sprint and it's the first device we have ever asked for an unlock on. So, this is the very first time all the way around.

I will give it 5 days then. My problem is that I want to go to T-Mobile, but I know of no one that has a T-Mobile SIM to test. I thought about buying some crap prepaid phone with a SIM on T-Mobile just to test a SIM, but if it costs me more than $40 or so I'm not in a spot to afford that at the moment.

I know someone at work who has Verizon and an iPhone 5 so I might ask there to try it, but that's rather a delicate situation. I also thought I might ask a T-Mobile rep at a store if they'd let me try a SIM to see, but I don't know if that's doable or not.

Asking questions at this point.

Verizon uses a CDMA network that's entirely based on UIM cards, so yeah you can use your co-worker's Verizon SIM to test it and they can put the SIM back in their phone with no issues at all. Verizon doesn't pair their SIM cards and my mother is using a unlocked Sprint iPhone 5 on Verizon with no issues at all.

Cool, thanks!

Since the last time I posted, a member here has graciously offered to send me two spare SIM cards. So, I will probably end up testing with those.

I expect that everything will go as it has for you. I just want to make sure this is the case before I jump out of here because porting back will be a real problem – and I most definitely would hear about it from my wife. :D

Wait, did you request the unlock while it was still on your account? If so it should be unlocked instantly, they only have a wait period for inactive devices.

Yep! Both phones currently have service. So, I guess they truly are unlocked then. Cool!

I'll wait for the SIMs to get here and check it out. I'm not planning on moving just yet, need to see what T-Mobile wants as far as money to establish service so while this is great I'm not in a rush at the moment.

Just getting prepared to leave is all. ;)

Also if you plug it up to iTunes you'll get a "Congratulations your iPhone has been unlocked" message, which would never appear on a international only Sprint iPhone.

I like the Sprint unlimited plan, but it's good to know I can ditch them if I really wanted to. :)

I got a international unlock and got an email from sprint, but isn't exactly like yours.

Also I dont get a congratulations that my iphone is unlocked. When does yours say that?

If you had the international unlock done before Sprint implemented DSU, it's not going to unlock it, you're also not going to see a message in iTunes. You need to put in a new request for an international unlock.

Im well aware of that, did both of mine today. No message in itunes, and like I said the email I received is a little different than yours too. Mine doesn't say anything about it waiting 4 hours or something like that.

Is it working on domestic carriers
