Gee, we sure needed another FF7 port.

Although some cold people probably will like that post, I personally think that - yes, I'm happy to have it on my phone and tablet. I loved the game on PSX, played it on PC again a few years ago and definitely will enjoy it again on my phone.

What exactly is your point, if you think that you have one?

WTF... The game supports the iPad 3 but not the 5/5C despite the fact that those phones have less pixels, much less screen resolution, a 4 inch screen (compared to 9.7 inch) and a better processor than the iPad 3. Yes they have a tri core processor compared to the iPad which has the same GPU but one core more but that's nothing really.

Just surprised that's all.

I'm a little confused by the requirements of this. Not only did the entire game originally fit on 3 CD ROMs--and that was with plenty of duplicate overworld content and archaic M-JPEG video encoding on the 40 minutes of FMVs--but the FFIII remake released on iOS is more graphically intensive than this, yet that came out in mid-2011 when an iPhone 4 was state of the art while this apparently doesn't run right on anything slower than a 5s.

I mean, seriously, a modern iOS device should be able to handle PS2 quality rendering without breaking a sweat, and they couldn't be bothered to get a PS1 game that's already been ported to multiple other platforms to run properly on anything older than a 5s? The iOS Driver port ran on a 3GS!

This has "sloppy port" written all over it. But, hey, I suppose some iOS release is better than nothing. Much more excited about VIII, which there's no reason shouldn't be on its way.

Personally, probably my least favorite FF game, at least through 12. I actually bought a PS1 exclusively for this game back in the day, but never could figure out why it was so popular other than the FMVs and prettyboy protagonist. It had its moments, but Cloud is wildly unlikable, the party flexibility and game system isn't anywhere near as good as FFVI, and it was the first one without proper Amano design work.

Awesome game , I recall finishing it on my ps1 many times , the battle scenes were amazing

Imagine this on the new Apple TV !?! I think Apple could really have a contender in the console stakes with it.

$15.99 is a bit steep for a game nearly 20 years old. I get that there was still work that had to be done to port it to iOS but I don't think it's worth that high of a price tag.

Hopefully there will be a sale in the very near future that lowers it below $10, a price I consider far more reasonable.

On the app store I'm looking at it says that it has been optimized for the iPhone 5, but the description says otherwsie, guess that may be confusing for some.

I'm particularly gutted by the 'Over 4GB of free space is required to download it' I dont think I had that much sapre room on my iPhone or iPad since I took either of them out of the box.

This is almost certainly not a port of the PlayStation version as the article suggest but rather a port of the PC version that is currently being ported to the PS4. I'm holding out for the Xbox One version of Final Fantasy VII Remake personally. I don't want to play through the original version again for 100+ hours.

Can anyone confirm whether this has iCloud save support before I pull the trigger? I regularly switch between iPad and IPhone for games, so it'll be a waste of time if it doesn't support iCloud save syncing.

Thanks :)

The difference between the two was the midi vs MP3, but they put the MP3s into the PC version, so it'll most certainly not be midi... even though midi owns.

For anyone asking: this is an horrible, horrible port, BUT it has iCloud support for save files. And that's the only good thing one can say about it. I've been waiting for this and I'm a bit disappointed! :-(
It's bearable on the iPad but not on the iPhone

They probably will... It's a pretty common business tactic. Sell it for a bit higher than you normally would, then offer a discount later on and people will grab it thinking they're saving.

$16 ! That's pretty expensive for a port that's already been ported to other new platforms last year... Not like it required huge loads of work and reverse-engineering to understand old code or anything...

Plus it's hard to believe it's 1.7 GB, since the original game had 3x 650MB CDs with a LOT of shared content. Unless they re-mastered the resolution of textures and cutscenes maybe ? And adapted the game to Retina Displays ?

It's a VERY high profile port. And they're like... Square Enix... there's no 'reverse engineering' their own code.

iOS port with HD graphics. PSX version wasn't HD. It's a high profile remake of one of the best games offered during that era.

I'll be buying it.

Also new to the iOS version of the game is an option to turn off enemy encounters in area maps and a Max Stats command to "become all-powerful in the blink of an eye."

Well that's stupid.

Imagine some kid who never played FF7 decides to download this from the App Store. Instead of experiencing the real FF7, where you have to learn how to battle and level up your characters, they can just turn off enemy encounters and max their stats with no effort.

Guys, there is a bug. After one hour you can't go on with the story, you Are stuck. Tested on an iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6 (iOS 8.4.1)

I'm sorry, I AM VERY SORRY for you, because i shared your same hope. It is NOT what you think it is. It is a very sloppy and lazy port. It doesn't have HD graphics. Fonts and characters have a higher resolution than ps1 but that's all and it's not HD. Backgrounds are very low res. Textures during battles are VERY low res AND have no filter at all. Format is 4/3 with huge blu bars, no touch screen support, everything is done via virtual bottons, including menus and battles. It's like those ps1 jailbreak emulators.

And, at this moment, there is a bug which makes impossible to go on with the story, after barely one hour of playing! Did they even try the freaking game before starting to sell it???

Think about the FF6 iOS port! That was fantastic! This is completely different. Trust me. Don't buy, at least until they do something with this garbage of control system. On the iPad I can barely stand it, because I love FF7. On the iPhone. I have an iPhone 6 and the portion of the screen that displays the game is about as big as a 4s screen and cluttered by a thousand of virtual buttons. It's a f****** jailbreak emulator

AFAIK on the PC/PS4 versions they changed the music from midi to pre-recorded audio streams (FFXIV and FFXIII use a kind of "cued audio loops" type of track where the entire track plays as normal, but certain points in the track can be seamlessly jumped to.) It's unlikely that they "remastered the textures" because that would require having HD textures from which to remaster from, and the original game didn't have "textured" models. They were all lit polygons. The bulk of the games size came from the duplication of map assets so you didn't have to swap cd's every time you switched from overworld to city view.

bout damn time gawd srsly

The improvements sound useful though I'd still prefer to play it on my PSP. There's something I don't like about playing full sized games like these on a touchscreen. BUT I am glad more people get to enjoy this game. It's phenomenal.

Played it for the first time in 2008 and it hasn't aged that badly.
