I just spoke to Apple on the phone. I have the MBP 2.4 15 inch matte 7200rpm. It's custom made, so it came from China.

I have the yellowish tint on the bottom of the screen and I just spoke to Apple on the phone. My options were to send this computer back and receive a new one in the mail (which would take weeks), or send this machine to Apple Repair and have them replace the screen. I opted for the latter. I'm sending this computer back on Monday and I should receive it with a new screen in 5-7 business days after that.

That might be a better choice than playing roulette and hoping to get a good screen. Hopefully Apple is truly aware of the problem and has notified their repair centers with instructions to only use the non-yellow screens (be it LG or Samsung). Let us know how it goes, I'm very curious myself.

Has anyone tried to update their SRMBP with the patch from Apple? I was wondering if apple managed to put a better LCD profile so the problem can be lessen to a degree that's "acceptable" to most people? *shrugs*

p.s. i am really nervous since i will pick up my MBP on TUE. I have been waiting for the bookstore on campus to get the shipment. They ordered 130 MBP and only got 6 so far...In the mean time, i am still on my ibookG4 dual USB.

cheers,

Yep, didn't fix the issues (yellowish, flickering)

There's also these threads which seem to have conflicting results.

New OS update for SR fixed my yellow screen issues.

MacBook Pro Software Update 1.0 Released

The update affected the relationship between temperature and fan speed on my MBP. The fans kick in much earlier now, so it runs cooler. A modified color profile will not eliminate the yellow tint problem if it is only showing at the bottom of the screen. I actually calibrated my LCD with a Gretag Macbeth colorimeter, so overall the color accuracy is improved. But it won't correct how the same color may vary across the LCD panel.

I notice a yellow tint if I look at an extreme angle at the top, left and right side.

As for the flicker, anyone have more details on this? What exactly is flickering? (the entire screen or certain part)

Besides the yellow that I see at angles, everything else about my MBP seems great. This is my first Mac, and I am pretty pleased with the quality of the design and features.

I switched my profile from "Color LCD" to "Generic RGB Profile", and it seems to have fixed my issue. I don't think I have yellow banding at the bottom, but the standard profile had an overall yellowish tint to it. The change in profile makes it a lot better, to a point where even if I look, I don't think I can see yellow. So now I think I feel my MBP is perfect, no kernel panics, or anything aesthetically out of place.

I'm at the Apple Store right now, after showing them my computer with the yellow bottom. They saw it, and we looked on all the display MBPs, and they all had it. The computer he swapped out to me also has it, and the Genius is going to submit this to Apple Engineering.

Angelguy, I used that test pic you put up, and it was the one that really shows the problem.

Good. Not that you can't find a non-yellow screen but that they were able to see the problem and Apple Engineering will see it. This way Apple could address the problem and hopefully fix it.

what hardware identifier you have? in system profiler-> hardware overview
maybe stupid to mention, but i have a Dutch keyboard and for that produced in an other batch. I have a samsung matte without yellow. what is the model indetifier?

Just incase anyone hasn't stumbled upon this post it's pretty interesting. It basically questions whether the yellowing toward the bottom is a result of a yellow sticker that Apple places around the LCD's to see if someone has tried to tamper with the insides of the computer. The backlight toward the bottom might be shinning on the sticker a bit which is causing the yellowing on the screen.

Let's hope that is the case as it would be a very simple thing for Apple to fix. The OP is going to follow up with their local Apple vender to see if that's the case.

I think this is the solution! I talked to Apple and they said to take it to a Mac Genius (presumably to fix quickly)...

I spoke to Apple and the person said this was an unknown problem. It would be so much easier to deal with this stuff if Apple was honest with its customers.

What brightness level are people running their new MBP's at? I was worried about having mine at max brightness, so currently have it 4 blocks from the top (see attached pic). I feel this is maybe a touch dim in certain conditions. What do others have it set at?

personally, I keep mine at the brightest setting, because the screen is just too pretty to be dim. Now only if the yellow would go away :(
