Well put it this way, if you bought 5000 Defective Samsung Screens and when you sell them the majority of people don't notice that there is anything wrong with them, would you make more money selling them or throwing them out?

Apple CANNOT acknowledge that the problem exist. If they do, they will face a serious loss as they would have to have all of their laptops recalled/replaced which would cost a lot of money. It is better for them to just keep quiet and have the people who do notice the problem return their products and only replace those few ones as opposed to all of them.

I am certainly not educated in corporate business matters, but would Apple really lose money in the long run? It seems to be that the manufacturers of the faulty displays would and should ultimately be held accountable for the displays. Maybe I am just being naive and this is not the way the business world works.

I am not sure who would be responsible because that would depend on the deals between the two companies which I wouldn't know of.

However, even if Samsung paid for a whole new set of replaced screens for Apple, Apple would still have to pay the cost of notifying all of its consumers and paying its employees to replace the parts on the laptop. In addition, it would be negative publicity for Apple and it would be something extra for Apple to deal with that it wouldn't have to if it kept quiet.

In all honesty, most people don't know about the problem, and probably will never notice it. The reason why so many people here know about it is because they read the forums and have found ways to determine if their computer is at fault or not. For the average consumer, ignorance is bliss.

Yes, I see what you mean. But it sure doesn't seem right to pass off a faulty display (one of the more important aspects of your computer) to an unsuspecting consumer rather that consumer is cognizant of the issue or not. Let's face it, there is an assumption when you buy a top of the line computer that you are getting something special. It saddens me to realize that this is probably the norm in business today. BTW I am still waiting for my MBP 2.4 7200 Matte that I ordered on the first day they were available. I do photography and video and I am not going to be too thrilled if I receive it and it is defective after the incredibly long wait I have already endured. Apple can never seem to give me a definitive answer for why mine is taking so long.

Just call the Apple people up and sound very very upset that it is taking so long. They will give you lots of free stuff :D.

And if you get a defective display, don't worry you can send it back and they will replace it (though you will have to wait, which kind of sucks). The guy doing my order for my replacement rushed it to be 2 day shipping and he gave me $30 off! I've heard of others who've gotten even better bonuses, so don't let a faulty display discourage you.

Thanks hurriance for the encouraging words. I am trying to be patient, but I have actually started having nightmares about the display. Maybe the long wait will pay off and I'll get a defective free MBP. I am going to try and keep positive thoughts.

Since many people have said that Samsung are the main screens that have this problem, has anyone created a thread with a Poll showing this? I saw a thread that ask you to post various info (purchased date, manufact. week, screen type, etc) but it wasn't really a poll that you can see actual numbers.

If nobody seen one yet, I would like to create one.

From this thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/315411/

Matte – 30 good, 12 bad - ~72%
Glossy – 11 good, 11 bad - 50%

LG – 26 good, 4 bad - ~87%
Samsung – 15 good, 19 bad - ~44%

The Samsung Defective Rate is more than four times as prevalent as the LG one.

Yea, thats the thread I was talking about. I think it would have been wise to actually create a poll with the thread, more people would probably respond.

Update: I took my MBP with a Samsung screen to the Apple store today. I showed the genuis the problem with the lower 1/3 of the screen being slightly dull. At first, he said he didn't see it using the test images on page 14. I then made a blank safari screen and dragged it from top to bottom and back. He played around with the backgrounds and eventually chose a neutral gray. He did end up seeing what I was talking about and offered to exchange it. Gotta love Apple customer service.

I ended up getting a LG week 26 build. So far, it appears to not have the issue. I was nervous opening the box thinking it may be another Samsung with the similar problem. But it looks good so far! My only gripe is that the track buttom is slightly raised more on the right side than the left. And the power cable was slightly crimped at the adapter end when I got it out of the box. Those are minor issues, and overall I'm pretty happy now!

My laptop did shut down for no reason when the battery was still at 60%. I'm hoping that was a fluke and not a battery issue. Hopefully, once I calibrate it, I won't see that again.

Congrats on the LG! I hope the one I'm getting this week will be a defective free LG :(

I was just wondering, are all glossy screens Samsung ones? What's the relation there, if any between glossy/matte -> LG/Samsung

There is no extremely evident one. Both of them produce glossy and matte screens.

Quick question for everyone on here, since Im fairly new...
Im thinking about buying the 2.2 Ghz Macbook pro and would like to customize the 120gb hardrive to 160 gb... now seeing all the issues with the yellow screen, would I be able to return my product if I received a "faulty screen" or would I be stuck, if anyone has any idea, please let me know soon, thank you much :)

I am noticing a distinguishable aqua blue/green hue on the bottom 1/3rd now on my LG matte. When I look from the high top or bottom I see a aqua hue and a yellow hue from the left or right extremes. It is definitely less bothersome than the yellow 1/3rd but using the test image, the top square is definitely more white and clear while the bottom is definitely more dull and aquaish.

Can I send this in even though I submitted a printer rebate?

If there is a problem with it, you can return it and they will replace it for you, so don't worry about that.

Whatever the answer is, could you post it when you find out. I want to get the rebate when my next MBP comes but don't want to make returning it more difficult.

Has anyone posted a good picture of this problem? I know it may be difficult capturing it with a point/shoot, but anyone with a DSLR should be able to get a good snapshot of it.

22nd week build 2.2 with the samsung display...no yellowing and SUPER bright...i love it, the only thing that gets under my skin is the gpu. hope they fix the drivers for that soon. it has so much potential.

I have returned three 2.2 MBPs with 160gig HDs. If a product is faulty it's faulty.

How yellow is this the screen with this issue?

For most people, myself included, near the top (About 1/6-1/4th of the diagram from the top; it usually is more of a yellowish off white than a yellow, and even though it normally isn't that bothersome, seeing a wonderful LG screen that is white in all parts makes it hard to not notice). I have seen some really yellow ones near the middle yellows at the Apple Store though.

Just got a 2.2GHz glossy stock model for my cousin and i spotted the yellow tint immediately. Such a shame, a beautiful screen ruined by this issue. Always the same story with Apple, the product would've have been perfect BUT.......

Ugh, my cousin hasn't seen the screen yet so i dont know if he'll spot a difference. If he does its bye bye Apple hello VAIO. One thing is for sure, i wouldn't trade my previous gen screen for this one. LED or not.

Update: Cousin finally saw the screen spotted the issue without me even talking...wasnt too happy. MBP is on its way back. Will either hold off or get a windows based laptop. Sigh...was so close to getting him to switch.

Would it be possible to create a colour profile which is slightly more yellow at the top half of the screen, as this would even out the whole screen to the same "white" point and make the issue less noticeable?

I dont know if this is even possible but just throwing an idea out there. :)

Unfortunately, ColorSync profiles affect all areas of the display equally.
