OMG! I just went thru the advanced calibration tool, and no more yellow. The whites are nice, and the colors just look more accurate. The yellow tint at viewing angles is far less noticeable then the default profile.

I agree with others, Apple really dropped the ball with the default color profile. Its like night and day when you calibrate it.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if anyone rents out the professional calibration tools? They seem pretty expensive, and I would only need to use it once.

I bought a 2.2 SR MBP last week. I have a week 24 Samsung matte screen. My 14 day is up this weekend and I want to make sure I absolutely do not have the lower 1/3 yellow tint problem. Here are some observations:

1) While doing regular web surfing, I don't notice anything unusual.
2) I tried a test where I created a blank Safari window, made it really small, and dragged it from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen and back and forth. When I do this, I do notice a slight change in color. The window at the top of the screen is bright white, whereas at the bottom of the screen, it is just slightly dull. I did this test in a dark room so that I don't get any artificial light effects.
3) I pulled up the test images on page 14 and noticed that the white squares in the all-black image are whiter on the top and slightly dull on the bottom.

My question is, for those of you who have the 1/3 lower tint issue, is there a distinctive line that separates the yellow part of the screen from the good part? It looks like I may have the issue, but it is very subtle. Should it be a lot more obvious? I'm debating on taking it back to the Apple store because I'm afraid they'll say they don't see any difference. In fact, I asked a friend of mine to look at it and he said he saw it, but only a very slight difference. Otherwise, it is a good laptop with no dead pixels, flickering, or squeaky keys.

Should I take it back?

I notice a very slight difference using those test images. After customizing my color profile, its even less noticable. Like you, may laptop has not defects. After changing my color profile, I have no more complaints.

I just received my 17" high res glossy mbp and I have to say that its beautiful and I love it better than the 15" 2.4 ghz that I had. The brightness is not an issue its still way bright enough for me that I just put the brightness up a little over halfway and more than satisfied. Wow the resolution on this thing is crazy good =D and there is no yellow whatsoever anywhere and evenly lit with even accurate colors!! =)

finally i'm satisifed~

The problem is, now that you NOTICED it, you will forever notice it and so should take it back. When you get your next laptop, if it is not immediately noticeable, don't go looking for the problem, or else when you'll find that you won't be happy with your laptop.

Yes, but something else probably wont be perfect and you will notice that :)

Question:

How do you figure out which manufacturer made your MBP display?

Taken from another thread.

To find the screen manufacturer, open up system preferences and go to Display.. Then go to the Color tab, select the Color LCD profile, and then click on Open Profile.. The information is displayed on line 13.. 9C67 is LG.. 9C68 is Samsung

I am suffering from the same yellow tint problem:mad:
It is my 3rd MBP and still same problem!!

So I found some colorsync profiles on the internet, but I cannot use them?

I am putting them into the profiles folder as instructed, but I can't see any additional display preferences/color?

What should I do, my COLOR LCD profile belongs to 6/20/2007

Depends what model of LCD you have - there is an LG and Samsung one. LG profiles won't work on the Samsung and vice versa.

I received mine on June 29. 15" MBP glossy... opened the box... downloaded the test image(page 14)... saw the problem... picked up the phone... called apple right away... asked for exchange.

No question about it. I didn't pay $3300 for a bottom 1/3 yellowish screen. You didn't pay for that right? So, do what you have to do.

I should receive my second one in two weeks. If I see the problem again... In fact, I am going to look for it. I will return/exchange again and again and again... until I am 100% happy with it.

lol... i wonder how many exchanges you can go thru before they say no...
they'll probably offer you a refund after a few..

in theory you can only change once for the same issue. at least that's what they told me at the apple store.

applecare

If apple does find a fix down the road for the yellow 1/3 issue (perhaps just using LG displays?) would this problem be covered by applecare to replace the screen?

The store I bought my MBP from was willing to exchange until I was happy. I went thru (3) Samsung's before I ultimately opted for the refund. I'll wait till Leopard is released, then I'm going to try again.

did you have to pay restocking fee or anything?

Well I went to the apple store today, got my MBP exchanged after talking it over with a genius about the 1/3 yellow tint problem. I didn't have to pay a restocking fee.

The new MBP had the same problem , Samsung matte....
The genius checked if there was a new shipment due, and came back saying the MBPs they have in stock were all part of the same batch meaning if I exchanged it again at that store I would most likely have the same problem.

I left with the new MBP, so now I have two options. Go to another different apple store thats 3 hours away, and try my luck at getting it exchanged there for an LG screen or go back and claim a full refund within 14 days.
Or third option I could keep it, as sometimes I forget the problem exists, although when I do see it, it is disheartening.

I think I will get a refund and get a MBP when Leopard comes out or in a few months time. Hoepfully the screens will be up to scratch by then.
Oh well...

I'm not sure if this has been addressed or not. I've tried to read through as much of the last 25 pages of this thread, but I'm sure I've missed a few things, so I apologize if this is a repeat...

When I first turn my MBP on from Sleep, the screen starts with more of a blueish tint, and it looks just like my Powerbooks screen Color. However, about a second and a half later, it flashes to the yellowish tint that everyone seems to be complaining about.

I'm not sure if others are experiencing this. Also, since my display seems to be capable of not having a yellow tint, is there a way to change a Profile to correct the problem? I have the Samsung by the way.

There are two yellow tint problems. One is that the entire display has a yellowish/greenish cast that's caused by the default ColorSync profile. This is completely fixable via calibration. What you are seeing upon awake from sleep is a slight delay before the default profile is reapplied, hence the more blueish look that you're used to.

The second problem is when the lower-1/3 of the display has an additional yellow tint. This problem is common with the Samsung panels and rare with the LG. It is not fixable via calibration and probably represents an as yet to be identified manufacturing defect.

Yes, but something else probably wont be perfect and you will notice that :)

True, but if you spent that much money on a laptop you deserve for it to be perfect. Plus, the more you exchange it (applies through the online apple store only), the more free stuff they give you to "apologize" for what has happened. :D

This is RIDICULOUS!

When are Apple going to acknowledge something is wrong?

I rang the Apple UK store and asked them if they know if the yellowing in the bottom 1/3rd of a random sample of screens has been fixed yet, since I am holding off my purchase until it has:

The guy said he had heard nothing about this problem and asked where I got the information from. I mentioned this forum and he said, "I wouldn't trust that site. We know about them. It is full of our competitors trying to trash Apple's reputation. I know for a fact there is no yellowing issue as I have sold a lot of these new macbook pros."

I just cant believe that Apple is denying it. Is this problem really restricted to the vocal minority who are lingering in this forum? Or are Apple trying to flog off their bad screens knowingly?

sounds right....

This whole forum works for Microsoft, dedicated to trash talking Apple. Me personally I work for Microsoft in their Zune division hoping we can can overthrow the iPod with our inferior product.

Im surprised you had an employee who said they heard about the issue though. When I ask, they look genuinely puzzled. Furthermore, everyone I ask seems to be colorblind and unable to see a light tint of yellow...

Well put it this way, if you bought 5000 Defective Samsung Screens and when you sell them the majority of people don't notice that there is anything wrong with them, would you make more money selling them or throwing them out?

Apple CANNOT acknowledge that the problem exist. If they do, they will face a serious loss as they would have to have all of their laptops recalled/replaced which would cost a lot of money. It is better for them to just keep quiet and have the people who do notice the problem return their products and only replace those few ones as opposed to all of them.
