Stage Manager on iPadOS 16 is now optimized for iPhone apps on the iPad, letting users use apps made for the smaller iPhone screen as individual windows on M1-powered iPads while using Stage Manager.

With the release of iPadOS 16 beta 3, Apple is now allowing iPhone apps to run as individual windows in Stage Manager. This means popular iPhone apps that have no iPad app, such as Instagram, can achieve a semi-normal user experience thanks to the new multitasking interface.

Stage Manager is one of the biggest new features for iPadOS 16, letting users have overlapping app windows. Stage Manager on iPadOS 16 is only available on the latest iPad Air and the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros with M1. Apple says that only iPads with the power of M1 can run Stage Manager.

iPadOS 16, alongside iOS 16, macOS Ventura, and watchOS 9, will be released to the public this fall.

The apps still show the little curve in the bottom right, used to re-size iPad apps - but it seems to have no effect on iPhone apps (you can drag them to a different size, but they rubber-band back to the single size).

Still no fix for portrait-mode-only iPad apps (Linksys!!!)

How is this better than nothing? We could run iPhone apps for ages. In fact I am running instagram now. Sure it got black borders but it is at least bigger than this new implementation.
I stand corrected, I didn't realise it was possible to run iPhone-only apps on iPads unless the developers 'opted in'.

I've never understood why people want an Instagram iPad app. Aside from the obvious question of why the hell anyone uses Instagram in the first place, it's an iPad. It has a desktop class web browser.

Back in my day everything was a website and it turns out it pretty much still is.

Instagram is nice if you manage your feed and aren't dumb about who you follow; I use it almost exclusively for things related to my hobbies.

This is a great feature. Android has a similarly great feature where they force optimize apps to fit whatever width widow they are being viewed in.

I think you can control window size, but now it doesn't have to be full screen.

Honestly, that's seriously pathetic. Running instagram in a tiny window on a 12.9" expensive iPad...
FaceBook apps are notorious for not fully embracing iPad in general. This is an excellent feature to accommodate those who do use these apps on iPad anyways. That said, it looks like you can stretch the window to make it bigger.

Crazy optimisation skills. I was expecting Instagram's minimum system requirements for Centre Stage to be M2 Über with a petabyte SSD and 1TB RAM

Facebook/Meta/Instagram and Googles purposeful neglect and hostility toward iPad and iPad apps (if they even have them) is utterly ridiculous.

Even with Apple doing an end around for google docs in safari, for example, it still cant scroll in google sheets with the trackpad.

Can’t stand this nonsense.
