The only true difference is now it's based on completely proprietary platforms and systems and is completely locked in.
For a website that's all about showing pictures and comments, there's no actual reason to require an app beyond control.
I don't understand why Instagram for a lot of reasons, but what I was saying I really don't understand is why it has to be an app in the first place. It's actually a very simple service.
The fact that everyone wants an iPad app so bad just shows the negative side of making everything an app.
I think your bias is fairly heavily reflected in a lot of this. Not saying you are right or wrong, but I think people who are embracing these new technologies are finding a lot more benefits than your extremely short list of negatives (proprietary, locked in, controlled, etc....). So for many, since they are focusing on a bunch of things they see as positive, there are a lot more benefits than what you are putting forth.
People ALWAYS find ways of exploiting others for their own gain, it has been that way since the dawn of man and I am sure it will continue well past everyone who has ever posted on this forum is dead. Bad stuff will always exist, and good stuff doesn't magically appear in the absence of bad stuff. What that means for me personally: rather than focus on what is bad and try to prevent more bad, I focus on the good and try and make more good. Naive, short-sided, slippery slope? Maybe, but I have successfully built and sold two businesses, so I think my method at least works for me
