The only true difference is now it's based on completely proprietary platforms and systems and is completely locked in.

For a website that's all about showing pictures and comments, there's no actual reason to require an app beyond control.

I don't understand why Instagram for a lot of reasons, but what I was saying I really don't understand is why it has to be an app in the first place. It's actually a very simple service.

The fact that everyone wants an iPad app so bad just shows the negative side of making everything an app.

I think your bias is fairly heavily reflected in a lot of this. Not saying you are right or wrong, but I think people who are embracing these new technologies are finding a lot more benefits than your extremely short list of negatives (proprietary, locked in, controlled, etc....). So for many, since they are focusing on a bunch of things they see as positive, there are a lot more benefits than what you are putting forth.

People ALWAYS find ways of exploiting others for their own gain, it has been that way since the dawn of man and I am sure it will continue well past everyone who has ever posted on this forum is dead. Bad stuff will always exist, and good stuff doesn't magically appear in the absence of bad stuff. What that means for me personally: rather than focus on what is bad and try to prevent more bad, I focus on the good and try and make more good. Naive, short-sided, slippery slope? Maybe, but I have successfully built and sold two businesses, so I think my method at least works for me :)

All that sounds good, generally speaking. You sound like a good one to ask, because I genuinely don‘t know. Can you give me one example of why Instagram specifically is better as an app, that couldn’t be done as a website?

I appreciate your point of view but what’s good for business now is not good for the internet in the long run, and I think we’re already in the early medium part of that run.

Share sheet integration is one example, so you can post from anywhere (Camera Roll, Files, Lightroom, etc.) on the iPad instead of needing to go to the IG app first.

I have tried playing Diablo Immortal on a external monitor and it turned the game portrait instead of horizontal, in beta three of iPad OS 16 anyone have a answer how to fix it

Ah well, the most powerful mobile device available in 2020 won’t be able to run Instagram in a little window.
If you load it in a separate Safari window you can with Split-Screen and Slide-Over. If you don't like those solutions the blame lies with Instagram for not supporting basic iPadOS features; they're probably still salty over Apple's Do Not Track feature..

Yeah good point, I actually thought of that after I posted. File upload is still slightly clunky in a browser. It is of course possible, but the iPad would probably not be the place to upload from.

I guess I just assumed (like IG probably does) that anyone on an iPad would be pretty much viewing rather than creating at the time, and I don't see a lot of difference in just using a browser. Browser would be better in fact since you can remove annoying elements.

Also, picture size is limited to 1080x1080, since they bumped it just once since the original 640x640(!) so viewing it on an iPad is a waste.

This is one of the reasons I personally dislike Instagram. The whole idea originally (stolen from Hipstamatic) was that these tiny low quality pictures coming out of these camera phones could use a little filtering to make them look less bad, and quality doesn't matter because nobody can see it clearly anyway.

That idea is a little antiquated today but the quality is still intentionally low.

The apps still show the little curve in the bottom right, used to re-size iPad apps - but it seems to have no effect on iPhone apps (you can drag them to a different size, but they rubber-band back to the single size).

Still no fix for portrait-mode-only iPad apps (Linksys!!!)

That’s disappointing. I was thinking it would work since there are so many iPhones with different screen sizes and it would let you resize it that way

Sorry for the delay, I was back country backpacking. There are quite a few, but even just "going live" or viewing/posting Reels. Also, say you are wanting to do a survey on your Story? That also doesn't touch the interface elements or the fact that on a browser, on a smaller phone screen, you are always loosing screen real estate. For people who want to make the user experience better, those creators are going to use apps as they can allow those experiences to be the best they can be. Too many compromises with "web apps" no matter how good they are. If the focus is not on the best possible user experience, then absolutely the web apps can be "good enough".
