Mad pricing. Add the cost of the iPhone that you also need, and it gets even more ridiculous.

Good luck Apple. Let's hope there's enough stupid geeks out there who are going to fall for this.

More like diehard fans, plain geeks without a love for Apple will just get a Moto or anything else really.

The iPhone's price started at $600 and dropped to $200 within 4 months of its release.

Apple could do something similar with the Apple Watch when they realize it's not shipping in as much volume as they want.

lol where does the iPhone cost 200$ (i am not talking about the subsidized price)

Ambitious for a device that is bound to have a rapid life cycle compared to traditional watches.

Both in terms of features, but also in terms of things like this:

"Sorry, this version of AppleWatch OS is not compatible with your version of iOS on your iPhone".

I can see it now.

Gosh, I was really expecting Apple to announce you could replace the battery and cpu ~$xxx so you could keep them for a long time....but nothing.

$800 for a disposable watche? Think they'll sell well at first as the true believers buy them, but unless they have a way they don't become obsolete in 2/3 years I don't see sustained big sales...

$1000 for the one I want. Too rich for my blood, Sport, here I come.

Edit: on second thought, SS with sport strap looks nice too. $600 with my $250 gc puts it at the same price as the Sport.

re-writing history?

They dropped the price BY $200, not TO $200 a few months after it was released. The iPhone 3G was dropped to $199 (on-contract) and was released a year later.

So basically, what this pricing lineup means is this:

Pay 349 or 399 to show the world you're a "poor jerk" who couldn't get a decent looking model that doesn't have a plastic band, meanwhile you can get many other watches, smart watches even, for less even, that make for a nicer accessory.

Replacing the battery?
Outrageous!

Have you seen their laptop lineup?
If it shaves off a millimeter and they can glue the damn thing and need less screws, but really to make the product obsolete more quickly, they'll gladly take that concern from you and direct you to out-of-warranty support.

I've grown accustomed to not expecting jack from Apple in the repairability department these days.
Expectations down to zero, anything they "grant" you is a bonus.
And yes, this will greatly influence my buying decisions and life-cycles in the future.

But Average Joe doesn't care, so it's okay.
Sell to those who don't educate themselves about their products they buy, they are better grossing for you.

It's a shame really.

Welp, it looks like I'll be getting the sport version. The upgraded materials just aren't worth the cost unless I knew for sure the internals could be upgraded.

It says this has the biggest selection of bands. Is that meaning pre-packaged bands? Or compatible?

Will all bands be compatible with all watches? If Apple makes me go to SS just because you can't get a metal band for a sport I will be so disappointed

So the one I want is $1099. But I will never pay that.

So then the next option is paying $399 for something I don't like.

Or option 3

Get a SS for $599 and then save for the band? nope.. not for the Space Black.

the apple watch is going to be one of the biggest mistakes in apples history. it looks awful, not a lot of features, you need your iPhone with you, and it costs way to much

I remember when they displayed old threads about the "failure" of the iPod. I have a very strong feeling that you are going to be eating your words in a few months when you see the stats.

Option 4, don't reward them for this strategy.

Of course it will sell like crazy anyways.
We're talking about Apple. They can leverage the emotions people have for them unlike most other companies.

Crazy

Way too expensive. You know that $600 starting price does not come with the stainless steel band, so you’re really talking about $1100 for a man’s smart watch. Nuts! This is a disposable consumer item. They’re going to rev this every year. I’m not spending $100 bucks a month on my watch. Sorry Apple lost me with this one. I’m now very happy with my Pebble Time Steel decision.

Pretty much right in line with what I was thinking for the SS version. This is Apple. Nothing they sell is inexpensive. Not earbuds, not phones, not Mac's and certainly their watch wasn't going to be.

As this is a visible device (i.e. It's obvious who's wearing one) then its fashion accessory status means that early adopters will pay a lot for it.

The price will come down to take it to the masses next year, just like it did with the iPhone

are there enough people with more money than sense for this to be a success?

Yes, absolutely there are.

There's a big difference between paying the "Apple tax" and this.

With my Mac I knew I was paying a good chunk more if you only consider the specs and not the other benefits to it, but this is really asking more than a premium.
Especially for a product on a much more rapid life cycle.
My iMac from 2011 is still going strong and if I gave it an SSD now, I'd be looking at an even better outlook.
Upgradability and repairability are a thorn in Apple's margins, something the Apple fanboys want to see rise and rise, as somebody who has a clear mind and accepts a premium, but not the shady tactics, you don't have interest in Apple's margins getting obscene (meaning beyond a reasonable premium).
Unless you have shares of course.

£819 for 38mm with link bracelet, no way I can justify buying one. Might buy a pebble. Really prefer a Speedmaster though....

Well.. there will be many idiots who'll buy these watches. I'd never pay that much for a first generation gimmick device with no real purpose. I mean, come on.. there are enough cheaper ways to track your fitness; and to be honest, people who exercise a lot don't even need it. All the other cheesy stuff they've done was hilarious.

what i find utterly redic is that it still only comes with 1 year of warranty. they claim to have made some long lasting fashion product yet their "faith" in it says otherwise. even my $99! watch came with a life long warranty.

the first decent looking one starts at 1.999 .... i am not spending that to ... send each other handdrawn silly smilies and heart beats

the only reason the apple watch will be successful (if it is), is because its made by apple and people crave apple products. they won't buy it because they like it, they'll buy it because its the cool, hip thing to do .

Who are you and why do you sign your name at the end of every post? It's kind of annoying.
