Wow. The stainless steel watch with the link strap was the only one I was even half tempted by, but that pricing is insane.

Gosh, I was really expecting Apple to announce you could replace the battery and cpu ~$xxx so you could keep them for a long time....but nothing.

$800 for a disposable watche? Think they'll sell well at first as the true believers buy them, but unless they have a way they don't become obsolete in 2/3 years I don't see sustained big sales...

This is where Apple is genius, and we are all enabling them. People WILL pay these prices. I think they'll come down a little in time, but Apple has basically introduced another cash cow into the mix. At any given time an iPhone owner will have thoughts of adding to their experience with an Apple watch, even if it requires replacing every few years. If 10% of people buying iPhones also pick up an Apple watch, then replace every few years....its instant cash cow. The key will be, if word starts getting out that these things actually do enhance ones daily activities and work well together as a pair (iPhone and Watch), then the potential is huge. That's the big question that has to be answered though. If I shell out $399 and it doesn't enhance my life in some way, they'll lose me as a future customer. If it does enhance my life, I'll end up in yet another upgrade loop.

Version 1 works out good for apple because the watch needs to be thick which means it takes more steel, gold, etc to make it. Later the thing will get thinner but they will keep the costs about the same to make even more profit per watch! Brilliant!

I'm getting the cheapest version of the 42mm.

Icon or moron?

I know the :apple:Watch is, in part, a fashion statement, but, if I get the link bracelet, I'm afraid people will not be thinking, "nice watch," they'll be thinking, "that idiot spent $449 on his watch band." That's not the fashion statement I want to make.

the link bracelet is a mighty fine piece of jewelery. By itself it costs $449. So it makes sense that buying the stainless steel watch with that strap will push you to a grand.

It's always better to wait

The fact that the bands are a significant cost, and that they are replaceable means there will probably be third party bands at a fraction of the cost soon. So those of us 'on a budget' will be able to get a cheaper entry level watch and upgrade the band for less than what apple charges.

I would hope so, but who knows, maybe they patented the connection so they can prevent companies from selling replacement bands.

Seriously, I have what I considered a fairly expensive aviation watch that cost less than the Apple watch, has a bunch of extra mechanical features for calculating all sorts of things, has solar charging behind the face, and is all stainless steel with a nice stainless steel band. Why should Apple's band cost *MORE* than an entire watch that has a beautiful stainless steel band?

This is ridiculous.

I am not going to obsess over the 9 hours of milling and hand polishing of the damn thing, make a cheaper version of it if you can't sell that specific band at a lower price point. You spend your time appreciating the front of the watch, not the back.

Apple has jumped the shark with this one.... I hope the original iPhone will be the example with a market correcting price drop and refund checks.

Again, I don't disagree with the price of the watch itself... just the fact that the watch band costs MORE than the watch (Remember, the $500 watch price includes the plastic band)

A $200 markup for stainless steel and a $49 penalty for being a man. $149 for as much leather as goes into a smarty case for an iPad mini.

I think they've lost the plot

Now don't get me wrong I'm not saying they won't sell maybe they will. But consider what surgical stainless costs and then break down the math where the apple cost is more than $1.50 material difference for stainless and $.25 for the extra 3.5mm size.

They absolutely should have lessened the margin by such a small amount on the man vs woman size.

Stamped Stainless jewelry is $5 for what 8 oz.

The only thing i can come to is they have a vey low margin on the base model due to computer components and need to offset that with stainless. Thing is they're already doing that with bands.

I see a price drop happening rapidly. For me. I'll keep my pebbles (steel and original) and wait to see what happens.

By the way. The pebble steel price point would indicate I'm right about the cost offset

Realistically to get something built from pebble steel materials costs $700 from apple.

I guess we will see if apps are worth it

Btw. To get a black band you have to get space grey aluminum in the sport? You can't have silver aluminum and black rubber without spending another $50 on rubber?

The rubber bands should be $19. And they'd still be making $9.90 if wholesale was $10

As a shareholder I hope it's a breakout hit. As a consumer and a professional in technology it's a miss for me as it sits. Maybe my mind will change.

The black aluminum is going to scar badly.

That is OBSCENE! I want to say I can't believe it, but I can, and people will buy this just to be "trendy"

yes

It went from $599 to $399. I bought it right after the price drop.

yeah, it never went to 200$ outright for the original iphone. It started at 599$ for the 8GB model, but in about 90 days it was 399$ for the 8GB model. AT&T MAY have subsidized the model by giving APPLE 200$, but the buyer still had to pay 399$ for the phone.

I really don't understand this complaint, or any complaint really about the cost of these things. If it isn't a price you want to pay try just not buying it. If apple priced it wrong people won't buy it and they will adjust. If they priced it right people will buy it and you can buy something else that's cheaper.

Not every product has to be for every person.

An affordable plan - why buy eggs if you can have the hen

instead buying a watch, consider buying its stock. For example, buy 8 shares for $1000 (how much you were going to spend on the combination you really like). Sit on the stock for two years and sell your 8 shares for $600 gain. By then, the watch you want would be $600 and you have a free watch.

Seriously, that's how I afford my new iPhones...iPads, and soon :apple:watch..

Now, only if I can figure this scheme with a Ferrari...

I'll take it!

I wish I could somehow take this bet from you, since $AAPL will not be worth 60% more in 2 years.. no way, no how. That would make apple worth nearly 1.2 TRILLION $ at that point.

you might be right but...

you might be right... but in march/april 2013, aapl was at $60 and today it closed at $127. Of course, if I have hindsight, I would have bought the Ferrari already...

My example was an exaggeration... but seriously, the gain from stock this week would have paid for 3-4 watches .

Cheers,

Well, technically no.. This week one wouldn't have made anywhere NEAR that money unless
A: they bought before the open on Monday, or last Friday and held at least about 200,000$ of stock..thats a lot of stock.
B: they managed to time the market perfectly and held about 80,000$ worth of stock

As for hindset, yes it would work out better if we could more easily predict the future.

For example, had I NOT sold my 25,000$ worth of stock purchased in June 1997 for a 500% profit (125,000$), today I would have 6,250,000$ MILLION dollars worth of apple stock.

I try not to think about that DAILY! and try to console myself with the thought that they education I paid for with the stock purchase has grossed me nearly that much over time.

But it sure would be nice to have the education AND THE FERRARI!

Note to others. The trick here really is not to try and trade, but to start early, pick good companies and try to let the earnings and stock appreciate over longer periods of time, 5-10 or more years.

There are companies out there today which could do SIMILAR but NONE (imho) that will ever really do the same. Unless you consider some biotechs focussed on broad cancer remedy/applications. The market for those solutions would be in the 100's if not 1000's of TRILLIONS.
