Standalone VR Headset 'Oculus Go' Now Available for Purchase for $199

Just a toy, with no full motion it’s like selling a car with no steering wheel

Thanks @Stella and @dabocx I'm way too paranoid to cover my face and ears with a device and get fully immersed. I don't even run / walk with earphones in afraid someone is going to come up behind me and stab me and I'd never hear them coming.

I tried Oculus Rift and some Steam VR games at someone's house. He had the 4 motion/position tracking sensors set up as well. It was quite cool. However, it's like with many things in tech... "don't knock it till you tried it", but also "not something I'm willing to spend money on".

this is frustrating right now. Thereis' either the mobile based headsets like this Occulus unit, or the phone based units.

or there's over the top expensive computer ones that come full roomscale.

what I want is an "in between". a headset capable of desktop gaming, but without the additional fluff of roomscale and controllers. The games I play are sit-down in chair games with their own controllers (Steering wheel / HOTAS. The low end phone based ones have way too much lag to use with RiftCat for these games. But the high end ones (Vive/Rift) are ridiculously expensive still

where are the $299 PC based units people!?
[shrug] Give it time? It took while for us to get to $300 iPads and iPhones.

I mean, Its neat, but I've used Google Cardboard on a very high end smartphone, and the capability was still far below that of a PC tethered device. I have doubts that any mobile SoC can provide a quality that will hold up in the long term compared to a PC.

Maybe an SoC like what Apple puts into an iPad Pro could do it, as from what I can tell those are pretty powerful SoCs, but I doubt using something that powerful would work well with regards to heat and battery life.

Might as well save up a bit longer and get a Rift that uses a PC. At least you can upgrade your GPU as time goes on and keep using the same headset.

I've said it before: VR will remain a niche product as long as people have to wear those awkwardly bulky goggles.

I mean, you'll always have to wear goggles of some sort. True they're on the bulky side now, but Im sure they'll get slimmer as the technology matures.

Remember, the VR stuff we have now is like the early black and white days of television. It took decades of refinement to get to where TVs are now. And there were a lot of people who were dismissive of TV in the early days too.

Until there is a killer app — like being able to innacurately measure how tall your 9 ft ceiling is — augmented reality will never take off.

All I want this for is to watch movies as if they were on a huge screen - can anyone tell me what the quality is like for this? I had PSVR and took it back pretty quick - the gaming side of it made me feel really sick and the resolution for watching movies etc was really poor.

Are there apps that will allow me to stream content from my Mac, also what is it like with glasses on (there wasn't enough room to wear them in PSVR), and is the image FHD or close when watching movies or is it pixellated?

The words "go" "now" and "plus" need to be retired from all marketing. Come up with something original for crying out loud.

I can only assume most of the detractors here haven't tried VR. it's a great experience, far better than that 3d crap we saw a few years ago.

What it looks like doesn't matter if everyone is using it. People look dumb staring down at their phones, but everyone is doing it so nobody cares.

The real issue with VR so far is it's so anti-social, and the library of apps is so limited.

It needs a Wii/Wii Sports moment. Get it down to the price point where you could feasibly buy 4 of these things for when guests are over, and make some casual/social activities that people will bond over in it. IE, bowling and golf.

I picked one up from Best Buy yesterday. I already have a Vive 1.0 at home too. The display quality on the Go is much better than the Vive. Much sharper, no god rays. It's definitely a seated experience but I really enjoyed using it immensely. Being totally wireless with no tether to a computer kind of makes up for the lack of full tracking. For me, it will mostly be for social type of stuff and watching movies and TV. I used mine for about 2-1/2 hours and then went on and put on my Vive. The display quality seemed so poor in comparison that it was actually nice to go put the Go back on and have a sharper experience.

I'm always perplexed at comments like that. Who on earth cares what they look like while they are in VR? And how exactly are you going to GET into VR without a headset in front of you?

Google Windows Mixed Reality. You can grab a headset for 299, doesn't use external tracking, supports seated mode.

Oi, I completely forgot about these. Microsoft's hololens turned out to be a real dud so I completely forgot the secondary announcement of these headsets! Thanks

I don't think Facebook have given serious thought to who will buy this. It will lead to market confusion for the casual gamers who are interested. There has been a lot published about the Oculus Rift VR so when people find out it's not compatible with PC that will be a big negative. And what casual gamer really will pay $200 for a gimped VR experience?

It seems more likely that Facebook want to start making some profit. Unless there is a Minecraft VR that will work on it I don't see it doing too well.

No slot needed. One of the benefits of todays modern devices is that images can be downloaded straight to the device. Also, with the straps, there’s no more having to use your hands to hold it against your face. The future truly is here.

I’m sure there will be ad-free apps on this thing as well. With Johnny Carmack at the helm, I’m sure we’ll see some really neat things on there as well.

Question is, if you will be actually be able to use it without registering it via FB.
FB will want to make money with this - and the hardware alone is not going to cut it.

In any case, I really have no need for this. I don't play games, I'm not an architect, a surgeon and I rarely buy furniture.

When I get a new iPhone, the AR on that will probably be enough for my use-cases.

I tried searching, but does anyone know if the games you bought for Gear VR work for Oculus Go?

Your analogy is off. Selling a car with no steering wheel is like selling a motor carriage without a horse. A better analogy is probably selling a car with no seats.
