It's a shame as a 24-90 Hz screen would have been a good compromise. Kind of flies in the face of Steve's old comment about how Apple doesn't ship junk.

As noted above, net year's SE4 is likely to steal a lot iPhone 15 sales: Someone non-technical goes to Apple to buy a new phone. They see on offer a 6.1" phone with A16 chip and 5G modem that costs $4-500. They then see another 6.1" phone with A16 chip and 5G modem that has a slightly different screen design and costs $799 (perhaps with twice the storage). Which are they more likely to buy...

It's in the article: "production scale constraints will likely prohibit Apple from bringing LPTO panels to the entire iPhone 15 series."
Not buying it - Apple, the company that has bought up the entire 3 nm production capacity at TSMC, can't get hold of sufficient LTPO panels while Samsung, Google et al can?

I am torn with stuff like this. On the one hand, I get that Apple is trying to separate the models. On the other hand I feel like 120hz refresh rate should be the standard.

Case in point, the 15” MacBook Air is going to be very expensive, but it will lack ProMotion. Having a nice screen refresh rate shouldn’t just be exclusive to the Pro Models in my opinion.

Why do people expect Pro features on the non-Pro model. How else can Apple differentiate their different models?
This is now becoming equivalent to Apple branding 5G as a Pro feature. Standard, non-flagship phones from multiple Android vendors ship with VRR screens at price points way below Apple.

Makes sense.

The regular iPhone is fast becoming the default model for those who just want a new iPhone when its time to upgrade and who don't care about the latest bells and whistles.

I suspect this will only change when enough regular consumers see their friends using $400-500 Android phones with smoothly animated screens & wonder why their more expensive iPhone doesn't have that.

I'm kind of glad about this.

I always buy the cheapest model.

I went from a 6S to the 11 and was thinking about buying the 15. I'm not sure it offers enough over my 11 (for me - everyone has different usage requirements) to make the upgrade worthwhile. So I'll be waiting for the 16 I think.

Good, this means I'll actually be able to use the 15. ProMotion gives me migraines & motion sickness, if Apple ever puts it on every iphone I and everyone else with this problem won't be able to use them anymore. People who are sensitive to OLED screens are already getting forced out, if Apple ever forces Promotion I guess I'll have to just limp my 14+ and SE3 along for as long as they'll go until a new screen tech comes out that doesn't make me sick. Or, hope and pray that Apple eventually puts in an accessibility option to truly lock the refresh rate.

Instead of assuming greed, I like to think that Apple is aware of their customers with neurological or optical issues. Keeping static 60hz on the base iphones might just be to ensure that these customers can continue to BE customers.

if it bothers you so much you can turn it off. on my ipad i can turn it off by going into accessibility > motion > and enable "limit frame rate".

Well I still don't understand what an always on display is good for on a device that sits in pockets/purses most of the time.

Reduced refresh for battery life yes, I understand. Does it apply to web browsing though?

its for people too lazy to tap the screen or the power button and for those who hate looking at a black mirror when not actually using their phone.

variable refresh rate allows the screen to reduce refresh rate to save battery life. for example on the watch it might run at 1hz when your arm is down but when you lift it then it'll go to full refresh rate whatever that is.

i don't know how it works on iphone. if you're not touching the screen and there is nothing moving then it might drop fps. so you scroll at 120hz and when it stops it might go to 1-30hz.

Who looks at one's phone every day while it sits on the desk?

I'm glad when it's off.

I want to buy a red one again, anyway - and they don't make them for the Pro models.

I tried that on my 13 pro and it didn't help unfortunately. Turning it off only limits the refresh rate up to 60hz, it still varies from 10-60 so I still get the headaches.

Apple is forcing a group of people who buys the standard iPhone to the pro lineup for one spec.
They’re doing it on the iPad for the same reason, speaking of the iPad Pro and Air

If people don’t buy these phones Apple stops making them. They will then just offer the more expensive phones.
…. and introduce a tier above Pro called iPhone Ultra. That will make Pro models feel like non-pro models of today as Apple slowly butchers them but keeps price point same.

In the end we customers lose.
