Even though I could almost guarantee that the only Pro features coming to the base 15s were the Dynamic Island and the A16, it still would've been nice to see at least 90hz on the base 15s

I have 12 Pro and my wife 14 Pro and honestly the differences are tiny. Taking upclose photos of documents is also much worse on 14 Pro - blurry near the edges unless you remember to enable macro mode. Otherwise regular everyday photos are indistinguishable. I never felt the least bit jealous to only have 12 Pro.
Does one have ProMotion and the other not? Where does ProMotion matter? Are people complaining to complain?

They have to upsell you.
Exactly.

Apple will only let ProMotion trickle down the value/$ ladder once iPhones Pro move on to something significantly and unmistakably better than ProMotion, or some other huge feature is implemented in the Pros displays.

It's the same reason iPhones SE aren't allowed to get a dual-camera setup. And why iPad 10 didn't get Apple Pencil 2nd Gen despite moving to the side-button TouchID form-factor.

Both visually and hardware-wise, there has to be a fool-proof disparity between each step on the product on the value ladder that even a child or your grandma can immediately grasp.

They’re not pro features just because Apple pretends they are.
I think they should get rid rid of calling stuff PRO, especially when some of the stuff they're calling PRO are on other lower cost competitors phones.
Apple should just call it he iPhone #Year, make just 3 models a small, medium and large all with the same stuff except batt size for obvious reasons.
Since Apple claims to be so environmentally correct a 2yr cycle on phones should be used.

Really the only way for Apple to change is for people to stop buying these phones. Maybe the iPhone 14 Plus sales were at least a start in the right direction
The iPhone 14 lineup is not necessarily a failure just because one model or several models failed to hit the projected numbers.

It appears as if the lacklustre specs on iPhones 14 and 14 Plus didn't lower total revenue. 14 and 14 Plus just pushed more iPhones buyers to get iPhones 14 Pro that otherwise would have gotten a mid-tier iPhone.

So it will still lack basic things even cheap Android phones have had for YEARS already?

Just spend a hundred bucks more for the “pro” phone, this thing will continue to be a rip off.

It's so weird that something like high refresh rate which is considered a basic/budget feature now in PC/Android world is still paywalled behind a "Pro" tag.

Then again 90%, probably more, of all iPhones are essentially glorified TikTok machines these days so I shouldn't be surprised. Apple definitely know their demographic very well.

The worst part is that ProMotion at this point is just a tacked on spec bump. The fact that I can't even scroll the settings app on a 13 Pro with 120hz on without random stutters kind of proves it. Even my friends 14 Pro has random scroll stutters, but when pointed out he was adamant he couldn't see any of it. Guess that's how Apple get away with it?

Partner has a Pixel 7 and it looks smoother and more responsive at 90hz, and that phone isn't considered very powerful at all in the Android world. Yes yes I know, Google evil wahhhhh wahhhhhhhh.
I just don’t know how much features like always on and 120 hz matters to many of us?
Same as having the fastest processor, yeah bragging rights but unless you’re gaming how much does it matter?

This is how you slowly keep eroding your customers’ goodwill, bit by bit.
“Surprise and delight” has turned into “Always underdeliver just a little“.

This is spot on. Apple is slowly eroding the goodwill it built over the last decade plus in the name of upsell/profit.

I was upgrading yearly since the iPhone 4 and then scaled back to every other year at the 12 series. The focus on profits and incremental updates is making me consider upgrading every two years (or not at all) if it keeps going at this rate. I know I’m just one customer, but I’ve always been big on Apple for years. Moves like this just leave a sour taste in my mouth and I think that goodwill will eventually run low.

It’s not just even about 120Hz/90Hz vs. 60Hz, AOD vs. no AOD, or even storage size - it’s about the philosophy of holding back industry-standard features in the name of the upsell. Apple used to pack great features that made it worth the price they commanded. These days, I wonder what tech in Apple stands out from the competition? Is it just ecosystem lock in? The upsell seems to be #1 priority over experience, we see it with Macs, iPads, and Apple Watch.

This may be due to a maturing product category, but it seems like customers are getting the raw end of the deal. Whether they know it or not. The goodwill keeps them locked in, but is what we’re getting actually worth it anymore?

I am torn with stuff like this. On the one hand, I get that Apple is trying to separate the models. On the other hand I feel like 120hz refresh rate should be the standard.

Case in point, the 15” MacBook Air is going to be very expensive, but it will lack ProMotion. Having a nice screen refresh rate shouldn’t just be exclusive to the Pro Models in my opinion.
I wonder if you asked 100 people how important the 120 hz refresh rate is would 10 people say it’s important?
Sure depends maybe on age.

Do what I do, buy used phones :}

I think it’s more of a “once you see it it’s hard to go back from” type of thing.
I saw it but right, don’t own it. But I’m the wrong demographic.
The last 11,12,13 promaxs are so good I just upgrade for the camera.
You save so much buying last years used. Looking forward to upgrading next year
to either the 14 pro max or maybe one of the 15s.

Good. Give more reason to kill off the base iPhone forever. They should just have one iPhone anyways like the good old days.

It’s offensive they offer the base at $799, and any self-respecting person who isn’t getting the phone for free should never buy the base model.
One annual iPhone that meets most needs doesn't allow for Apple's insanely profitable upselling value ladder strategy:

If you sell a small soda for $2, a medium soda for $4, and a super sized XL soda for $5, most consumers will only focus on:

1. How little soda they get for $2 or $4 compared to the $5 option.
2. The tiny $1 difference between the medium $4 soda and the $5 super sized XL soda.
3. Not what they actually need or want, or how much money $5 is to spend on soda. Instead they focus on all the soda they will lose by not spending $5.

And voila, just like that you've turned an irrational $5 super sized XL soda into a pragmatic buying decision and the best deal (in the mind of the buyer only, of course).

-iPhones SE and mid-tier iPhones are Apple's small and medium "sodas". Without them, Apple couldn't sell the average consumer on the $999+ Pros.

Yes this is like thirty years ago someone in my cless said never watch an HDTV unless you have one or yours will look like crap.
I have 120 refresh on my 13 pro max and didn’t even know it so it must be something you really notice
if you are playing games?

Something about the settings apps is problematic across platforms. The thing I have absolutely *hated* on the MacOS side in Ventura is that the system settings that used to be pretty damn smooth pre:ventura adopting the iOS components there are super laggy now.

Not really surprising. Though I figured the regular 15 models would at least have AOD.

Disagree. Apple did just fine when they had three options: new phones, one year old phone, two year old phone.

if Apple today made the lowest priced iPhone $999, people would still buy.

If Apple tomorrow said all our iPhone are $1199, people would b**** but you know what? People would still buy it because that’s what Apple is.
