Would be nice if they at least bump up the regular models to 90hz. At this point that should at the very least be the standard at this point for non pro models.

But I’m even more disappointed with the progress ios. Like how have there barely been any improvements to Siri in the last few years?

its for people too lazy to tap the screen or the power button and for those who hate looking at a black mirror when not actually using their phone.

variable refresh rate allows the screen to reduce refresh rate to save battery life. for example on the watch it might run at 1hz when your arm is down but when you lift it then it'll go to full refresh rate whatever that is.

i don't know how it works on iphone. if you're not touching the screen and there is nothing moving then it might drop fps. so you scroll at 120hz and when it stops it might go to 1-30hz.
Lazy people represent! Whut-whuuuuuuuut!!! 👍

Lol

It’s not laziness: it’s saving that extra bit of time during the day to quickly glance at the screen for info while I’m working hard.

It’s in the article but people still asking why cheap android phones can have these features while Apple can’t on 800$ phones: Apple can’t make that many screens. The base iPhones sell magnitudes more than any other single phone.

Good. Give more reason to kill off the base iPhone forever. They should just have one iPhone anyways like the good old days.

It’s offensive they offer the base at $799, and any self-respecting person who isn’t getting the phone for free should never buy the base model.

Apple gets away treating customers with contempt because the Apple fans just keeps buying what they put out and believe the marketing and promo materials, without even a thought of questioning it. There customers are being taken for a ride so easily that Apple profits are high. Ironically, these very customers are doing a diservice to Apple and to future Apple innovation.
So we know we can’t control the universe. It does what it wants. Apple marches to the beat of what its customers want and will buy. How it knows that secret sauce, is anybody’s guess.

So what will be fundamentally different between 13, 14 and 15, other than processor and camera

If the new "regular" iPhone 15 is just reusing the Pro chip from last year and doesn't include any new Pro features, I might as well just buy a 14 Pro from Amazon later this year; it'll be basically the same phone but with ProMotion and a $100 off discount. :p

Given how my main interest is shooting videos (currently on a regular 13), I will for sure get the 15 Pro/Max, and I'll give my immaculate 13 to my brother, who's itching to jump on iOS.

Anyway I understand Apple has to differentiate pro from non pro models, however the iPhone is still a kinda premium option and 120hz displays have become common on phones that cost half the money.

I think apple could give the iPhone a fixed 90hz refresh rate while still maintaining a strong differentiation between the pro and non pro lineup

If pro motion and AOD were on the standard model there would be almost no difference…

I get it but Apple should atleast make the price lower around $649 and $749 for Plus.

It's so weird that something like high refresh rate which is considered a basic/budget feature now in PC/Android world is still paywalled behind a "Pro" tag.

Then again 90%, probably more, of all iPhones are essentially glorified TikTok machines these days so I shouldn't be surprised. Apple definitely know their demographic very well.

The worst part is that ProMotion at this point is just a tacked on spec bump. The fact that I can't even scroll the settings app on a 13 Pro with 120hz on without random stutters kind of proves it. Even my friends 14 Pro has random scroll stutters, but when pointed out he was adamant he couldn't see any of it. Guess that's how Apple get away with it?

Partner has a Pixel 7 and it looks smoother and more responsive at 90hz, and that phone isn't considered very powerful at all in the Android world. Yes yes I know, Google evil wahhhhh wahhhhhhhh.

Sadly I have to agree with pretty much all of that. I really, really don’t want to deal with Google anymore though. But that S23 Ultra is starting to look pretty good. But I don’t want to do that because I like how everything works together, I don’t like a lot of stuff Samsung does, and despite all my complaining Apple usually does a pretty good job. They just really need to get their **** together about some core stuff they seem to be too distracted to get right. I don’t want to buy their car or VR goggles when they can’t get caller ID and call filtering, decent autocomplete, and other phone basics correct.

Yeah they should! $799 is ridiculous for what you get comparatively (to both Pro and other manufacturers)

People are buying pro model phones over the cheaper ones.

Make if if what you will, in terms of what sort of lesson Apple is taking away here.
Yea this issue is people need to stop buying anything. Even better jump to Android. If you go Pro, Apple got exactly what they wanted.

Exactly, and once you touch your phone, you are more tempted to use it.

Pro-motion will always be a Pro only feature, because Apple already put the Pro branding right there. If Apple put Pro motion on a non-pro iPhone, that betrays their own branding and marketing prowess.

The same on iPads and Macbooks, Pro-motion is only on the Pro models. This is quite simple.

The only possibility to get around this is if Apple would use 90Hz instead of 120Hz, and call it Super smooth Retina XDR or something, differentiating the naming from Pro-motion.

They’re not pro features just because Apple pretends they are.

They're "Pro features" if Apple makes them only available on Pro models. It's their product and they can market it as they see fit. There is no industry rule that requires "Pro" phones to have certain features. Apple’s Pro features may be different than Google, OnePlus, etc. just as SE, LE, Deluxe, Premium, Pro, Ultra, etc. may mean different things for different brands in other industries.

In the end, it's up to consumers to decide which phone offers the best price/value for their overall needs. Despite months and years of some people complaining on forums like this, Apple seems to still be doing quite well against competitors as far as sales and market share. However, if anyone is that dissatisfied with Apple's pricing or model configurations they should absolutely stop buying iPhones and go with an Android. Samsung, Google and others would love their business and routinely discount their phones to try to attract new (and keep existing) customers.

And we think you’re gonna love it!

Seriously though I do wonder how long Apple can hold off on features like this for the regular model as they become standard across the industry.

Yes I’m aware it’s called “ProMotion” so can only ever be on Pro devices supposedly. But can you imagine Apple selling phone without a Retina display for example as this is a feature that would presumably be limited to a Pro device if they had existed at the time.

And we’re getting there with 120hz displays. It won’t be long until Apple is the only one out there selling a phone without one!
Remember how long Apple was selling iPhones with just 16GB base storage? Apple can do what they do because they're the master of upselling. Apple is banking on people who thinks that they must have Pro-motion to just spend more for the Pro iPhones. Apple wins either way in the end.
