In Australia.

But are you sure it is "for no reason"? Has there been any changes in the level of "financial friction" when imporrting goods from a US company into Australia that might be a reason why? Has the value of AUD dropped relative to the value of USD. How is inflation in Oz?

There's a lot of reasons why prices might have increased. If you're based in Australia, you'd be in far better position to find out the reasons prices have increased in Australia than someone based in Europe (which I am).

I think you can. I usually look for an AT&T $1,000 credit deal which isn't bad.
Depends on where one lives, as cellular service quality varies on location.
One shouldn't just want a credit deal just to get a newer iPhone when the related service isn't so good.
In my area (N.E. US), ATT isn't that great. TMobile is better then Verizon. The $1K credit means nothing to switch just to get a new iPhone.
For service, it's relatively less expensive to go the MVNO route like US Mobile and bring your own phone.
One can always get a newer battery to extend the smartphone's life a little longer, if possible, esp. if it still works and does what it needs to do for you.
Staying with my 13 PM for now with a battery replacement when it hits 80% as it's still good after 3 yrs for me.

I just don’t understand how people don’t like bigger screen and better battery life in plus versions as a 15 plus user. This years base model is already seems to be a hit and imagine it with a bigger screen even 6.7 or 6.9 inches and with a much bigger battery. I respect to small phone lovers but IMO a plus version would also be great.

Go for it!
7", 8" ... heck, carry around an iPad all day long!

I'll either go find a flip phone or go back to no cell phone and just bring a camera if a situation warrants it.

I have zero interest in a massive, expensive, tracking beacon, attention addiction machine "phone".

This whole thing is getting totally out of control.

I’m shocked! SHOCKED! Next thing you’ll tell me that the Watch SE3 is selling better than the Ultra…

This is literally the best iPhone deal of the last decade. 799 is equilavent of 650 2019 dollars. which wouldnt even get you an iphone 11!

If only they made a 1TB SKU.

I barely fill my 256Gb…. I do use iCloud storage extensively, though.

Elitism = Upselling

Everyone is selling something. Or, to put it in YouTuber / Influencer terms, all content must be monetised.

Almost all YouTubers / Influencers are elitist. They’ll always push the top-shelf instead of the standard - they inevitably announce they’ll buy a iPhone Pro Max for themselves every year, they’ll always say they’re buying an Apple Watch Ultra.

The aim is to get their audience to part with as much money as possible for every purchase, and there to be many purchases. You must buy something from every release event or announcement. Staying with what you already have, and so not spending, is never presented as an option.

The biggest sin in influencer-world is to be a “poor person”. Because the more they promote the most expensive products as “essential” products, the more income, and the more goodwill from the actual electronics producers, trickles down to them.

The iPhone 16e was rubbished because it was cheap. It turned out a lot of users (not influencers) were very happy with the 16e.

It’s reality TV, it’s not reality.
I agree with you.

Guess I just missed the point where @MacRumors turned into influencers and not news reporters... I'd prefer them to stick to objective reporting.

I went from a 14 Pro 256gb to a 17 base. I am very happy with this new 17. I do see the difference between 60 and 120 and that was a factor to go pro the last time I purchased.

I’m an average user when it comes to photos and videos so pro cameras I don’t know that I ever fully utilized.

The biggest thing for me though is the weight. I know it’s not a huge difference but this 17 feels so nice in my hand and pocket over my 14 Pro.

Thank you Apple for letting us “average” users get things that shouldn’t be limited to just “Pros”…..finally!

but the company has struggled to find a fourth model that draws consumer interest.
Why do they need a 4th model? I understand having models at different price points, but 3 is more than enough to fit that need. They have the lowest cost e series, the standard model, and the Pro models. Seems like this year they had that figured out perfectly, but then felt the need to throw in the "sexy" Air in the mix for a marginal price difference, but substantial feature difference to the Pro.

Either a sneak peek or throwing things at the wall to see what sticks. First it was mini, then plus and now air. In a year or two it might be the fold.

The base model is much better this year, but I'm stuck getting a Pro for the USB 3 speeds as someone who frequently offloads photos to a Mac. On my 16 Pro Max, sending files over AirDrop isn't 100% reliable and the transfer often stops partway through, forcing me to have to retry it several times.

Sure Airdrop can be finicky, but how long time does it really take to offload the photos with USB2 speed?

Offloading the ”last week of photos” is still just seconds for me with my 16 Pro.

Even if it was a minute, I still wouldn’t let it control my purchasing decision

With the regular model being really good for the first time since probably the 12, and with the Air being the new novelty, the Pros will sell less than in years past, I would think.

Not to mention the higher price of the regular Pro model should lower demand, and thus, lower the iPhone average selling price.
I think it will only increase the non pro price next year. The rest I completely agree with.

Having wobbled around for years with a basic iPhone 12, this upgrade is a no-brainer. I'm quite sure there are many of us in the same boat; folks who passed up on the 15 and 16 but are ready to dive headlong into the 17 family. Even the basic iPhone 17 with 512 is a quantum leap forward for me, with a rear camera that's quadruple the one my 12 has.
