I just think all the R&D of the air would be paid of genereously if they released a 17 plus at 899. It would sell so much. I feel like if they waited 1 more generation they would find a way to implement 2 cameras and 2 speakers to air

As mentioned by others already, most people would be content with the 17 Plus, for those who want a bigger iPhone with larger screen, without the higher price.
I think that many consumers would then buy more of the 17 Plus, as ProMotion is now standard in all the 17 models, possibly causing loss of sales to the Pro Max version, which Apple wants to avoid.

It is a nice looking phone, but it's not noticeably heavier than the base model. Plus, because it has quite a large screen, you have to hold your hand quite wide to get a grip, so you don't really notice the thinness, either.

It's at its best when you hold it at arms length perpendicular to your body, and use another phone to take a picture of it 😁

I exaggerate of course - it is the nicest looking of the new phones, but I suspect that loses its impact after a few months.

The Air is too big for me, and now based on Apple's forced sales approach and intentional inventory restrictions, leaves people like myself in a holding pattern for 3 weeks. Imagine restricting sales of one new product, to push another, it's just amazing they decided to do that.

And in a few months, the Air battery will of course get worse, and now we're hearing that iOS 26 is chewing through batteries too.

i handhold 2 base models at store (the display was at peak all the time of course) and they were pretty hot, not comfortable touching them with bare hands, will see...

I just don’t understand how people don’t like bigger screen and better battery life in plus versions as a 15 plus user. This years base model is already seems to be a hit and imagine it with a bigger screen even 6.7 or 6.9 inches and with a much bigger battery. I respect to small phone lovers but IMO a plus version would also be great.

Bigger is absolutely not always better. I prefer a smaller screen because I want to be able to type with one hand and don't use my phone for consuming media. Plus, I have chargers everywhere I go, so I'm never worried about battery.

The 17 is definitely one of the best bang for your buck in phones right now. Apple really stepped their game up with them. I will always go with the Pro Max but happy for the people that do the base model. You guys got such huge upgrades this year!

Would anyone recommend going from 14 pro to 17 base? Concerned about reports re 17 pro/case, etc. Main use is camera though, have a youngin’ to take pics of.

Should note I do have a canon r50 for more official photos.
I have a 14PM and am considering the regular 17 as well.

The difference is obviously the lack of the tele lens, but what I have found is that the image quality of the photos from the tele, with no additional cropping, make those photod not worth keeping. 😂 Terrible.

I suppose it’s nice to have the tele when you need it and don’t have your “real” camera m, and it’s certainly better than nothing, but I have found that I rarely take a photo with the tele lens that’s high enough quality to bother keeping, printing, etc. Generally, there’s something about iOS’s auto-HDR intelligence feature really messes with the overall exposure of the photos. I hate it.

This is literally the best iPhone deal of the last decade. 799 is equilavent of 650 2019 dollars. which wouldnt even get you an iphone 11!

If only they made a 1TB SKU.

Sage is the third best iPhone color after Alpine Green 13 Pro's and Green 13's
I would've bought this one if they had offered 1TB

A lot of customers are probably upgrading from older base models.

I will be upgrading from a 13 later this year. Just waiting (patiently) for some discounts.

I think you can. I usually look for an AT&T $1,000 credit deal which isn't bad.

I agree with most of the comments here. It’s not a surprise the iPhone 17 is such a success: it gives customers what have been asking for all along. A reasonably priced premium smartphone, with premium features such as a great camera, a great screen and a great SoC.

The only thing that would make me wait for the iPhone 18 is the first 2nm SoC (A20) and the fact that this iPhone still has a USB 2.0 connector in 2025. But hey! I’m quite sure that the iPhone 18 will still have a 2.0 USB-C in 2027.

Oh, by the way, those who buy the 17 will have the latest base iPhone for a year and a half, as the regular 18 is rumored to be launched in 2027. So maybe another reason to grab one.

A year from now, at the end of the iPhone 17's production run, the base model might (probably will?) turn out to be the most popular base model yet. In each previous year's lineup, over the course of a full year, the base has sold more units than any of the other individual iPhone models in a given year's lineup, but so far the combined sales of both Pro models has been more than the base model, for whatever that's worth. Initial sales figures can't really be relied on to determine what the total figures will look like a year from now, but the trend has been that the base model's sales have significantly increased, so this year might be the first in which the base model sells more than the combined sales of both Pro models.

went from 14 pro max to base 17. Only thing i regret is a smaller screen. Man if only they had a 17 Plus this year...

Yeah, I'd get the base model if there were a Plus option. I really wanted the 16 Plus, but I just couldn't do 60 Hz anymore after years of ProMotion. Then they finally shifted the base model to ProMotion and got rid of the Plus :(

Given that the growing consensus is that the base model is the best option for most people at this point I won't be surprised that the value on the used market is going to be the best we've seen for a recently released iPhone.

To crush the Pixel 10 the way it has is very surprising.

The base 17 is one of the best iPhones ever made in terms of price/features.

The 17 Pro models are the ugliest iPhones ever made. Even, having skipped gray and dark colors are one of Apple’s dumbest decision in years.

Did you imagine an orange MacBook Pro or iPad Pro? Absurd.
The colors are more than fine. I actually love the orange and the blue is nice too. What makes the pro models hideous is the materials. They don’t work.

My hunch is that Apple decided to hold off on the standard white/black at launch on the pro models this year to see how many people use the tint feature on apps.

They'll come out with a more neutral color soon.

As an Apple customer I like seeing reviews for things like this iPhone 17 and the excellent M4 Mac Mini and see the headline takeaway of:
this new device is great value!

However I also think Tim reads this, shakes his head and thinks:
*I should have charged more*

What? How does this make any sense? If there was a Plus it would affect Air sales, and diminish R&D payback from the Air. They have has a Plus the last three years, and it hasn't sold well. They could have not invested any R&D into the Air and released a Plus.

I love my orange 17 Pro Max. I wanted something different and Apple delivered.

Don't lose any sleep over it. There's an entire team that performs analyses of price and quantity to reach the ideal max margin. This is similar to how drug companies like Merck and Pfizer do it. Often, having a low price but broad uptake results in more profit.

You have option return to exchange. Anyway I got 17 pro Max upgraded from 14 Pro max. Screen notice bigger and it felt lighter. It was good feel fit in my hand. I did get Techwoven. Really love it. It was Deep Blue. I believe you will feel great with Pro max if you can.

Tim Apple will ensure that this gets corrected in less than one calendar year.

A bit of a strange year for iPhone releases - the iPhone 16e now feels a bit out of place compared to the rest of the lineup and only $200 less than the base model iPhone which is almost nothing spread out over 36 months for most people. In the years prior the iPhone SE was a significantly different type of device in where you could argue targets a demographic that prefers the simplicity of a home button compared to the gestures most of us are already used to.

Bring back the Mini at $599! Do it TIM!
Agreed 16e should've been the mini. Updating it every other year on the SE cycle is enough for the mini users if that's what it takes to make it a permanent part of the lineup
