The base model is the only choice for me this year. Can't stomach the price increases for the Pros in Australia even there is no tariff to import from China. Plus downgrade from titanium to Aluminium. Seriously?! Apple just wants better profit margin. Paying over A$600 just for better camera is a rip off.

A lot of customers are probably upgrading from older base models.

I will be upgrading from a 13 later this year. Just waiting (patiently) for some discounts.
Yup. Finally upgraded my iPhone 12 mini. It really feels like you have a new phone in your hands. Difference is meaningful.

I think all those changes helped keep the base iPhone 17 at $799 in most places and as a result even outperforms the pixel 10 across the board with double the storage.

This is a "solid" upgrade year with a major test on how the iPhone Air holds up for the foldable next year.

Agreed 16e should've been the mini. Updating it every other year on the SE cycle is enough for the mini users if that's what it takes to make it a permanent part of the lineup
Likely that apple had a bunch of parts laying around to justify the release of the 16e, but I do hope we see a return of a smaller device for the SE line.

A 17 Plus with the 120Hz screen would have been absolutely perfect for me. My 16 Plus has performed flawlessly. It's been a workhorse.
Apple made a bonehead decision this year relating to the Plus, instead of giving it what the base model 17 has differing the screen size what Apple instead did was discontinue it and offer iPhone Air that omits things that people have gotten accustom to but please a small group of people.

This is looking like an iPhone mini fiasco all over again.

Air is a disappointment. Especially with the camera.

I got the base model in blue. I only got the 15 Pro in 2023 because of Pro Motion. Ot only do I think the base iPhone is a good deal this year, I find the Pro model to be a really bad one. It’s overpriced for what it offers over the base model.
Yeah,

HOWEVER

…. two cameras are Polish chocolate
( sorry Poles, just a random example, also you can’t be offended cos you’re not good at that chapter lol )
Vs

Three cameras aka BELGIAN CHOCOLATE 🤣🤣🤌🏻🤌🏻

Apple already explained why they went from titanium to aluminum unibody on the 17 Pros. If you don't believe them or don't want to accept their explanation, that's on you.

Not surprising. Between slipping into stagflation and releasing a base iPhone with a great feature set, it’s no wonder people are choosing this device in droves.

I went with the 17 Pro on the upgrade program. Honestly doesn’t feel like much has changed. Didn’t get much chance to use the 8x camera today which is what I wanted the most. Haven’t gotten to experience the new battery life since I got it late afternoon and it spent hours doing setup while draining the battery which arrived lower than usual. Usually when I get an iPhone the battery date is August but this time I got a July so it’s an early run. In the future I hope we can get square sensors for all of the rear cameras. I’ve been calling for this for years in smartphones so we can comfortably hold them vertical while shooting landscapes. Hopefully we can get open gate shooting on them for square shots at 65MP kinda similar to the old medium format photos I took in college on a camera borrowed from a professor.

Remember how you were calling the iPhone 17 an underwhelming upgrade, @MacRumors? A highly elitist comment, in my book.

Turns out, a larger screen in the same form size, with the long awaited ProMotion 120hz display and doubled base storage is exactly what sells in this economy. Who would have thought...

Well i guess I’m out of luck on this got a 16 back in April oh well the 16 is still a good phone just don’t have the 120 refresh rate
I wanred to wait and to buy a 17 but then at the end of August my kid smashed it‘s SE2, got handed down my 13min, so I bought a 16, and now 8km feeling a little buyer‘s remorse. New back camera, display, bigger storage, more robust, new selfie cam - at first I was glad that I saved €150 with the 16, but I think those update would actually be worth it. (still, it feels like a brick compared to the mini, even after weeks - I’ll start saving up now, so I can afford a 4th gen apple foldable in 2030)

Crazy to see the ratio between the standard model and the Pro. Is that just during launch or in general?

It feels like when I look at the people I know a much bigger proportion has the standard model.

I personally got the air. I think it’s the only cool one. If I hadn’t gotten the air I would have just stayed with the 15Pro which was fine.

I was planning to upgrade to the 17 Pro until I saw those hideous designs they came up with. So I went for the 16 Pro Max instead and I love it. I’ll wait until Apple manages to come up with a device that both looks and functions better than the 16 Pro. Otherwise I might look into competition for the first time since my first iPhone (3GS).

The base 17 model is now a perfect phone. Think the only reason to buy a Pro is to have better camera (zoom lens) and the Pro Max for bigger screen and better camera (zoom). Otherwise I think the normal 17 is the phone to buy. Will easily recommend this one. The sage color is also nice. Blue could have been a bit brighter.
I would add that finally it fixes the previous base models’s lack of promotion, which was a big deal to me

Don’t forget the green iPhone 15. While a bit too pale, I think it was the best color of that year.

Oh! And last years teal iPhone 16! Gorgeous…

But, yeah. Sage is such a sweet green for this year, and definitely one of my favorites ever.
Stop it!

I'd already narrowed down my choice of colour to the purple, black and white. And now I have to add green back into the mix.

Choosing your favorite iPhone color each year is fun, even if you aren’t going to buy it.

I have a soft spot for green, but never had one. And I’m not sure if I would end up tired of it. I guess at some point I’ll have to try…

I also like some shades of blue, like iPhone 13’s blue (iPhone 13 colors where quite good in general), or the classic Product(RED), although frankly? I don’t see a red iPhone 17 fitting into this years color palette.

By the way, have you considered the blue one? I usually don’t like the baby blue shade, but this year’s blue seems a bit more resembling iPhone 13’s blue. I guess I’ll have to see it with my own eyes.

I recommend making the color choice after seeing them in person. Often times the color changes quite a bit from the render we see in the screen to the real device.

EDIT: just to help you out a bit, I would discard the black one. I’ve been a big fan of midnight or even jet black colors, but this years black seems like a dark grey… also they show fingerprints more easily. Purple, green and white are three good options to choose from. But again, go and hold them in your hand, and choose with your guts.

I think this year I’ll be tempted to buy an iPhone 17, despite it only having 8GB of RAM. But it’s going to be a year and a half until the iPhone 18 releases so… yeah, I’m tempted yes.

Maybe I’ll wait until January for some sales on the base model, that now comes with a whopping 256GB of storage. Also liquid glass will be more… polished by then (see what I did there?)

I think you can. I usually look for an AT&T $1,000 credit deal which isn't bad.
We don't have those in Europe. It's more common here to just buy the hardware at a store without the involvement of your carrier. If you buy the iPhone from your carrier you usually pay much more in total.

Elitism = Upselling

Everyone is selling something. Or, to put it in YouTuber / Influencer terms, all content must be monetised.

Almost all YouTubers / Influencers are elitist. They’ll always push the top-shelf instead of the standard - they inevitably announce they’ll buy a iPhone Pro Max for themselves every year, they’ll always say they’re buying an Apple Watch Ultra.

The aim is to get their audience to part with as much money as possible for every purchase, and there to be many purchases. You must buy something from every release event or announcement. Staying with what you already have, and so not spending, is never presented as an option.

The biggest sin in influencer-world is to be a “poor person”. Because the more they promote the most expensive products as “essential” products, the more income, and the more goodwill from the actual electronics producers, trickles down to them.

The iPhone 16e was rubbished because it was cheap. It turned out a lot of users (not influencers) were very happy with the 16e.

It’s reality TV, it’s not reality.

Yes, the only reasons to do it ( in many European countries) are:

1) you can’t afford to pay in a lump sum (but it costs you more overall - so always questionable logic)

or 2) you are buying as a business, not a private individual, and you can write off the payment every month as a regular tax-deductable expense ( a very valid reason).

I was in the store yesterday and thought the purple one looked the best - the white one looked too "boxy" but that's just in comparison to my white iPhone 11 I guess. The blue and green looked a bit washed out, but then so did the purple/lavender one.

There's going to be no stock for a week or more, so I still have plenty of days to pop into my local store and continually change my mind. As of today, it's the white phone and a Shieldon leather case. Tomorrow might be purple with a clear case. Who knows what Monday will bring ...
