I wonder how much those things weigh? Does anyone have an estimate on its weight?

I hope whoever gets it knows how to scrape the hard drive of deleted files.

Um.... No hard drive in this Mac. In the ancient days of computing, they had to boot from floppies. :)

I remember carrying one of these with an external hard disc AND a voltage stabiliser all the way from the UK to Egypt in 1988, and again in 1989, and using it on a dig (in the dig house, not in the field). So it was sort of portable. Then we took it to LA as well, so it was pretty well travelled.

Like the first Mac Portable, it's most accurate to call the Mac Plus 'luggable'. :)

I grew up with this computer and we had an external HDD so we didnt have to boot from disks.. the HDD was HUGE, about the whole footprint of the mac plus... Ive still got the machine and it turns on but the CRT is dead so i get no image... i would LOVE to get it working in like new condition if not for anything else, just for the novalty of it. but its not worth putting any money into a machine that cant do... well anything really by todays standards.

I remember thinking I was very clever and having a RAM disc in that 1MB to simplify disc swapping. Then got the HD which was big at 10 MB in 1988. What were we going to do with all that storage we thought? [Today I saved a greyscale Photoshop image at 540mb.]

800 to 1200 HA!

on icollector.com the bid is up to $1900 and the auction is still 20 days away. My guess is with Mac fans and Star trek fans bidding on this item we are going to see this thing clear $8000.

Only $800-$1200? That's not very much. I guess I expected it to get more, being a collector's item for Mac enthusiasts and Star Trek enthusiasts.

I agree... Very surprised... Although it is an auction so i guess it could end up going for more than they expect...

Wow, I'm surprised about the price. Back in the days when I had any disposable income :))), I'd happily have paid more than that, just for the model number, never mind that it was owned by Roddenberry!

Yeah, I agree. It's going for a bunch more than the estimate.

I guess I'll stick my neck out a little and make a prediction: 7.5K plus or minus 1K.

...private collection of nude Uhura photos...

I didn't think of that. The very possibility makes me realize I should have at least doubled my predicted price...:D

No Blu Ray, no purchase!

(Although, the lack of super-glossy screen is appealing).

Ahh the Mac Plus. It was my first computer, I bought it in '87 and considered it a portable. I still have the soft side bag for it. I was a navy pilot and toted it around the north atlantic and med with me. A navigator buddy, room mate had one-we connected them with a phone cord and would dog fight with F-15 software with our Macs back to back like in battleship. I loved that thing and didn't get rid of it till '95.

Mac Plus weighs about 16.5 pounds - excluding bag

I used to lug one of them (and it's predecessor) from London to Europe, Sydney & Wellington (NZ), definitely luggable.

Just make sure that you let it cool down before taking through airport check-in, they get paranoid about hot bags.

so the case makes it portable, right!

Nah, just means you'll be more likely rip the tendons in your shoulder out of its socket as you try to be manly and pick the machine up with one arm -- instead of throwing your back out.
