Anyhoo, sign mi up for the bluray, bin trying to rip it from my sky hd box for ages, thisll save methe hastle

hmm. i could have sworn i was already in the process of "aquiring" a BD copy of the series about a year ago

now that its "official" i will purchase said collections :)

Were those movies even recorded in high enough quality to make a difference? I cant tell the difference between DVD and Blu Ray anyway though...

HA! yeh they certainly were recorded in high enough quality - film doesnt really have a limit in that sense.

and you cant tell the difference? wow :|

I can tell the difference side by side, but in general I am usually to focused on the movie to care about the quality as long as it is decent. I guess a movie like avatar would be an exception.

i can tell the differences in sound and images - guess i am just OCD about it. cannot stand DVD these days :(

Ugh. I really hope they put ALL of the deleted scenes on the Blu-ray's as special features. Anchorhead, etc. Lucas has been sitting on PILES of deleted scenes. Heck, there are even a few scenes from the prequels he didn't put on the DVD releases.

Does anyone know if he plans on 'opening the floodgates', so to speak? 'Cuz if he just gives us one or two new scenes and that's it, I'll be a bit disappointed.

This....

I hope it has the original edition as well as the special edition.

Oh how that would make my day. This is one reason why I double dipped on the dvd's was so I could get the original unaltered version of the first film. I can only hope and dream they will do the same for the blu-ray version! Good news either way I just hope they also have the original three films!

what gets me about the whole, Lucas waiting this long, he says "We’ve been wanting to do it as soon as we possibly could, but we just wanted to do it when enough people would be able to buy it and see it."

this makes no sense to me. its not like the blu ray's would be released and people would only have a certain amount of time to buy them!!

if you ask me me (which he didnt ha) i would have thought the best time to release the movies in HD would be right after blu ray won the format war against HD-DVD. imagine a series with this many fans, he could have done so many package deals with samsung or panasonic and made tons of money doing it that way.

i think its safe to say that if Star Wars had come out on BR thousands more people would have had blu ray capabilities earlier.

realistically i think what really happened is DVD sales numbers dropped below a certain predetermined point. "$h!t", Lucas said, "people are loosing interest again!! better get going on that Blu Ray thing."

in the end i understand its all about money. i suppose im just frustrated about having to wait this long:p

I'd almost agree, but remember it's only THIS year that Profile 2.0 certified Blu-ray players finally became reasonably priced (e.g., you can get a good player like the Sony BDP-S370 for US$150 at most retailers). Now that such players are reasonably cheap, there is now potentially a large enough viewership audience to release the Blu-ray editions of the six Star Wars movies and make a decent profit out of it.

A couple of tidbits, though:

1) Episodes I-III will likely be mastered from the digital versions shown in theaters with digital projectors.

2) Episode IV-VI will likely be mastered from the digital originals of the 2004 DVD release, with some changes to correct continuity errors noted by some viewers of the 2004 release.

3) All six movies will likely use DTS-HD Master Audio encoding, since this is current 20th Century Fox home video release practice and the fact DTS-HD MA has pretty become the de facto standard for audio encoding on Blu-ray discs because DTS-HD MA tracks can be decoded by older DTS decoders found on older external receivers.

i understand that more people have the player now, but lets say that star wars had come out on blu ray 2 years ago. the people that had them then would buy it, and the people that buy the player now after the price drop could still buy them. so i dont see the issue.

i think star wars is just one of those franchises that everyone knows about and has an opinion on. those that like it will buy it and those that dont like it wont buy it. in my opinion the release date doesnt matter much in this case.

A bit off-topic, but all grist to the mill:

But 1980 was also the year that Kurtz and Lucas realized the Jedi universe wasn’t big enough for the both of them.

“I could see where things were headed,” Kurtz said. “The toy business began to drive the [Lucasfilm] empire. It’s a shame. They make three times as much on toys as they do on films. It’s natural to make decisions that protect the toy business, but that’s not the best thing for making quality films.”

He added: “The first film and ‘Empire’ were about story and character, but I could see that George’s priorities were changing.”

"We had an outline and George changed everything in it," Kurtz said. “Instead of bittersweet and poignant he wanted a euphoric ending with everybody happy. The original idea was that they would recover [the kidnapped] Han Solo in the early part of the story and that he would then die in the middle part of the film in a raid on an Imperial base. George then decided he didn’t want any of the principals killed. By that time there were really big toy sales and that was a reason.”

The discussed ending of the film that Kurtz favored presented the rebel forces in tatters, Leia grappling with her new duties as queen and Luke walking off alone “like Clint Eastwood in the spaghetti westerns,” as Kurtz put it.

Kurtz said that ending would have been a more emotionally nuanced finale to an epic adventure than the forest celebration of the Ewoks that essentially ended the trilogy with a teddy bear luau.

He was especially disdainful of the Lucas idea of a second Death Star, which he felt would be too derivative of the 1977 film. “So we agreed that I should probably leave.”

Saw the original Star Wars when it came out in theatres in 1977. Loved it at the time, as well The Empire Strikes Back. The Phantom Menace is easily one of the worst films I've ever seen.

You didn't see Ep. II and III then?

I did. They were marginally better, particularly III. But still dross. And what's worse, not even fun, enjoyable or witty dross. Unbelievably static, dull and portentous.

But hey, this is a Star Wars thread. The first two movies were great. Overall, I'm not a hater.

I thought Ep.I was the best of the three. I'm not saying it was good, just the best of the prequels.
II was just awful, terrible acting and woeful script. III had those plus it was utterly corny...

i quite enjoyed all 3 of the "new" prequals. i think that they were quite well adapted to suit the widest audience possible - which comes down to revenue and junk. i enjoyed them all and will watch them again and again :)

There are parts in Episode 1 that just make me cringe they're so bad. As for the acting, if you can call it that, is bad in all three prequels.

If you've seen any on Lucas' film school projects they're mostly abstractions devoid of human forms. Lucas was deeply influenced by the Filmic Expression course taught at the school by filmmaker Lester Novros which concentrated on the non-narrative elements of Film Form like color, light, movement, space, and time. IMO he really doesn't like actors hence his dependence on digital characters.

Analog film doesn't really have a limit. Tut tut...

AYFKM? III was the worst of them all. You can see the progression from EI to EIII- as plot quality goes down, action scenes and CGI go up.

Interesting. Which kind of fits with THX 1138, a film I quite liked although haven't seen for a long time. Appropriate fit of theme, style, and story.

Back in 2008, the average price of a Blu-ray player was around US$350 to US$400--there were very few buyers back then! It wasn't until modern chipsets for Blu-ray players arrived in early 2009 that the price of players started to really drop, and today you can get a Profile 2.0 player (BD-Live support plus additional Internet connectivity) for under US$170 average price, which now makes the player reasonably priced for most owners of large-screen TV's with HDMI inputs. It's the now-reasonable price and rapidly increasing sales of Blu-ray players that made it possible for Lucasfilm to release the six Star Wars films on the new format and know they'll actually make a profit off the sales.

The Phantom Edit is pretty good, except for Jar Jar Freakin' Binks. But I tend to agree with you, mainly due to the presence of Darth Maul and Qui-Gon Jinn. As I said before, Liam Neeson can do wonders for a movie. Episode II was ok during the battle scenes, but terrible everywhere else.

Episode III remains the only Star Wars movie I have watched only one time. The terrible dialogue and cheesy ending ruined it for me. "I have the high ground!" Really? Jedis have been shown flipping through the air, and jumping insanely high. What difference does high ground make? And Padame died of a broken heart? WTF?

Anyway, I think my biggest gripe is the dialogue. There wasn't any memorable dialogue from the prequels. And wooden acting. Hayden Christensen wasn't that good, though it is hard to tell if it was his acting ability or the material he had to work with.

The acting was Lucas' fault. That's what happens when you have a one take guy. You can get bad performances from Natalie Portman, Ethan Hawke and Sam Jackson. The fact that Hayden isn't up to their level made it even worse.

As for the release, I'm happy to see it. I'm not a big enough fan to be irritated by the changes he's done (except for the subbing of Anakin in the hologram, what rubbish).

That being said, the wait I'm more looking forward to ending is LOTR extended on Blu Ray.

Far be it from me to defend ANY of the prequels as they awful, but the first is absolutely the worst. At least the third one had some action and a bit of plot, lame as it was. Unfortunately I ended up seeing Episode I in the theater three times due to commitments made in advance, and I am still scarred from it.
