Far be it from me to defend ANY of the prequels as they awful, but the first is absolutely the worst. At least the third one had some action and a bit of plot, lame as it was. Unfortunately I ended up seeing Episode I in the theater three times due to commitments made in advance, and I am still scarred from it.

If action is the metric by which you judge movies, yes- EIII was "better."

The acting was Lucas' fault. That's what happens when you have a one take guy. You can get bad performances from Natalie Portman, Ethan Hawke and Sam Jackson. The fact that Hayden isn't up to their level made it even worse.

As for the release, I'm happy to see it. I'm not a big enough fan to be irritated by the changes he's done (except for the subbing of Anakin in the hologram, what rubbish).

That being said, the wait I'm more looking forward to ending is LOTR extended on Blu Ray.

It more than just that. Lucas had great idea but he was a crappy writer, and a crappy director. Great idea guy but crappy on the other parts.

Of all the SW films empire strikes back is generally considered the best. It is also the one Gorge Lucas was the least involved in.

Not at all. These movies are not high enough quality for that defense to work, sorry.

The action was the redeeming quality of an otherwise piece of crap, and EP 1 didn't even have that much going for it.

I'm not a big action movie fan, actually. I like films of quality.

Back in 2008, the average price of a Blu-ray player was around US$350 to US$400--there were very few buyers back then! It wasn't until modern chipsets for Blu-ray players arrived in early 2009 that the price of players started to really drop, and today you can get a Profile 2.0 player (BD-Live support plus additional Internet connectivity) for under US$170 average price, which now makes the player reasonably priced for most owners of large-screen TV's with HDMI inputs. It's the now-reasonable price and rapidly increasing sales of Blu-ray players that made it possible for Lucasfilm to release the six Star Wars films on the new format and know they'll actually make a profit off the sales.

did you read what i wrote?

Blue Velvet said the exact same thing you did and i responded to it. but i'll say it again, its not like the people who buy the player now couldnt buy the movie. so again i dont see the issue.

Yeah but when they say they want 'as many people to enjoy it as possible', what they really mean is they want to make as much money as possible. They don't have any interest in driving player adoption at all, they want the biggest splash and payoff from the marketing hype. Building demand also helps that goal. They know catalog sales are a foregone conclusion but they are hoping for a frenzy on release to make them more than they would in the alternate scenario where they release early.

Not defending it, just explaining why they probably do what they do.

For me, Star Wars started with A New Hope and ended with The Empire Strikes Back. I refuse to allow half pint wookies (ewoks) into the Star Wars mythos. The Trade Federation never existed, for me. In my world, the Clone Wars never happened, the only Fett was Boba and the only Hutt was Jabba.

I have to admit Shaft with a lightsaber was cool. So was that guy with the wacky body modifications. In my world, their contribution to the Star Wars saga was recorded in the great libraries of Corcucant.;)

I hope you can buy the movies (original version, not the crappy enhanced garbage) separately.

100% agreed. Good to know that not everyone has drunk the kool aid :)

I lost total faith in George Lucas when he released the "Special Edition" VHS compilations of the original trilogy... he changed plot points, both subtle and major. The most glaring example for me was when he made it so that Greedo shot at Han Solo first in the cantina. The fact that Han shot first in the original release gave him an edge to his scoundrel character... that was lost when it became "self-defense". And don't forget when he digitally inserted mini-Jabba in to Episode IV... ugh.

He can regain some of that faith by releasing the original release versions alongside his "new vision"...

I can't stand ANY of them. They're all crap. ALL of them. Only once have I walked out of a film and demanded my money back (and got it) - SWEp1.

It is a genuine shame that the cinematic wet dreams of an extreme nerd, realized via appalling scripts, dreadful direction, pathetic plot lines and the gratuitous over use of effects is somehow heralded as cinematic history.

To date, I can not seen the entertainment in any of those movies. But then, I can't stand Dr Who, and I think Cloverfield was the worst film ever made.

On what grounds? You were dumb enough to see something without investigating it thoroughly first?

I already have them in high definition... I assume they're TV rips. Wonder how different the new BluRay version will be.

How do you thoroughly investigate a film without actually seeing it? It was possibly the most eagerly awaited film in a decade. I naively thought the hype might actually be because there was a good film to be seen. Only after seeing the first half hour of it did I realize just how catastrophically awful it was. I then left, and asked if I could get my money back.

You don't even like the original versions of Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back, or are you just talking about the prequels? Because I wouldn't say I 'like' any of the prequels either, I was just comparing them relatively.

Different strokes for different folks, no problem with that.

Looks like I'll be taking the plunge and getting a 42" tv next year. :D

I've been holding off on getting a 1080p tv (have a 720p) but with the introduction of star wars on blu-ray, it looks like a no brainer.

I believe you are completely mistaken in that assessment.

ha you're right it was SactoGuy18. Sorry bout that.

i understand that with more people having the player more people will buy it when it first comes out. With a "regular" movie i think that would matter. But with the case of Star Wars i dont think it matters that much. Not to mention when it does come out it will probably be close to $175-$200 for the 6 movies. Are they going to do some sort of package deal where you can buy the player and the movies for around $300? maybe. and of course that kind of a package 2 years ago would have been closer to $500-$600. But as i said before i feel these are the kind of movies that people are going to buy regardless of the price (at least the hardcore watchers ha).

i guess also along the same lines if the movies had come out 2 years ago they would probably be cheaper now.

i dunno, like i said i think im just pissed that Lucas waited so long to release them just so he could make few thousand dollars more. i mean he is struggling finically so i understand:rolleyes:.

Yay!

I REALLY HATE Star Trek.

Surprisingly, I like Star WARS OK.

I would be really interested if the original release was available.

I totally agree with the previous posts about changing the originals. They're works of art, some more than others. Adding or changing stuff is like drawing a moustache on the Mona Lisa.

They really hacked ep.5 to pieces on the DVD.

Please give us original releases, flaws and all.

Have Fun,
Keri
