Usually I'm Pro-Apple

But this time I can't understand why they made so many promises and didn't deliver. I know that I've read about "ran by a marketing department", but marketing only works for so long before you have to back that with something.

Great job though on this creation! I love it!!!

Hi Guys, I have just figured how to put this effect in Photobooth as well.

1. Extract HoloGit.qtz from the zip file.
2. Place it on your desktop for easy access.
3. Copy the HoloGit.qtz file to /Library/Compositions - The keyword is *Copy*
4. Go to photobooth in your applications folder and right click to *Show package contents*
5. Navigate to content>resources
6. Drag the HoloGit.qtz file from the desktop to this folder.
7. Locate the file *EffectsOrdering.plist* in this folder
8. Open the file with textedit
9. You should see a number of effects listed in that file. You should see user backdrop 1, user backdrop 2, and so forth in the last paragraph.
10. Replace the words *user backdrop 1* to *HoloGit*
It should look like this: <string>/HoloGit</string>
11. Save the file. Close all folders.
12. Open up photobooth and enjoy your newfound effect. :)

Ok steps been updated due to the confusion.

For whatever reason, I can not get this to work. Do I need to have the developer's tools installed? I tried the original ichat method and could not see the effect. I then tried the above method for photobooth and again..no dice. When I go to the 4th effects option, all I see are "drag your background here" despite having completed the method

Now that didn't seem to work. Perhaps the "trayviewmode" file will be of help?

This step-by-step worked for me. The effect showed up in PhotoBooth for me. It appears on the 4th page of effects

I like this effect better than the Apple one: this one looks like a ghost to me :)

I followed the instructions to the letter, but I did not use text edit to open the .plist file. I just double-clicked and replaced "/userBackground1" with "/HoloGit" (its case sensitive I think). And it works :)

I think part of my problem may be that there is already a background in photobooth that I had dragged earlier. Maybe that is why it is not working. I still do not know how to delete the background I dragged in (no one does)

Well done!!
Great effect, and very easily added to both iChat and PhotoBooth following your instructions.
So is it some kind of luminosity or brightness filter? It seems to pick up white (eg a piece of paper) very strongly, but black (eg my highback leather chair) completely disappears.

Thanks for the cool and quick work.

That is VERY cool. Good job!

It works in iChat for me as well as PhotoBooth. It doesn't show a preview picture, that's why it is hard to see. But it is there.
