I don't think the ball is part of the droid. My impression was that the head unit of the droid is trying desperately to get somewhere fast or running away from something using a ball. Maybe the droid was decapitated.

I'm so stoked on this movie and the teaser increased that one hundred fold. I'm surprised at the reactions on this site compared to others.

Also it's weird how MacRumors didn't list John Boyega as part of the cast when he's the first person you see in the trailer.

Droid > who knows. That is a fun theory though.

Re: John Boyega is one of the main leads and I think he'll do fine. I just want John, Daisy, Oscar and Adam to make me interested in their characters/plight so I won't be counting the moments waiting for Luke to show up. The Sith character has me very interested so that's a very good indicator I may not be counting those moments after all.

I am trying to keep my expectations at flatline because of my disappointment with the prequels.

It's quite incredible. People complain about the logic and practicability of a lightsaber with a crossbar. This in a movie franchise that features sentient battle teddy bears and a man-sized dog that flies an aerodynamically illogical craft called the millennium falcon.

To be able to enjoy Star Wars you need to leave logic at the entrance of the theater, sit back, eat your popcorn and relax..

I hear you on the new characters, and I'm sure they'll be interesting. Some good casting there. I'm curious about Domnhall Gleeson's character- we haven't seen a shot of him yet, but in real life he looks like he could be related to Obi Wan. I also cannot wait to see Gwendoline Christie's (Brienne from Game Of Thrones) character.

The prequels mostly sucked, true, but I have my hopes up for a Return To Form. Maybe that's what they should've named this one!

You can tell the empire storm troopers are the good guys because they use Macs, have iPhones and Apple Watches.

So what was the other reason this was a MacRumor headline...?

So what was the other reason this was a MacRumor headline...?

the other reason was to elicit these kind of stupid posts. Don't read and comment if it isn't of interest to you. Macrumors posts multitudes of news articles per day and has long ago moved beyond rumors to general Apple news (in this case iTunes). Do all articles need to be of interest to you?

Edit: just looked at your own page. There are several articles with no relation to your main page topic. Please explain why you can and macrumors can't post these kind of posts...

For all the hype, the trailer was underwhelming, in my opinion.

I know, right? How many Star Wars movies do we need, right? I mean, George Lucas isn't even dead yet-- they should let the man rest in peace already. Anyway, if they are going to do it, it should star Noah Wyle. And JJ Abrams sucks. Can you say "4 8 15 16 23 42"?

Teaser, this is not a trailer, this is a teaser.

Even though it was shorter than a lot of trailers, it was still a trailer. Nitpick all you and many others want, but, it isn't going to change my opinion of what i saw. And my opinion of this trailer does not mean that I cannot, or will not give a favorable opinion later on about any other trailers for the movie, should I think it warranted.

Well, I'll reserve judgment on a return to form as it is too early to call, but I am nowhere near as cranky about this as I was several months ago. And I keep watching the teaser so that is another good sign for me.

Of the younger cast we've mentioned I am only familiar with a bit of John and Oscar's work. I am looking forward to seeing who Lupita will play. She'd make a terrific Force user or a great pilot (or both.) :D

Teaser!!!!!! it says right there in the title, come on, how stubborn are you?

You can say, the TEASER was underwhelming, in your opinion.

So? I don't come to MacRumors for news about irrelevant movies, I come here for...let me see...Mac rumours!

Well it's Apple-ish news.....

Star Wars is owned by Disney. Disney and Apple are partners ergo Star Wars news is relevant to Apple.

Easy. Watch Firefly, which has a similar dichotomy. A couple places in the show & movie pretty much give the answer in plain words in the dialog.

Although, the bold phrase makes no sense. I don't see that in the SW shows. Not at all. Are you sure you weren't watching Wall•E?

I've watched all of Firefly and enjoyed it. It's still a crock that outpost worlds would be dumps.

----------

I think you miss the point of "....A long time ago..." Star Wars takes place in the past in a less "advanced" period. Yes they are more advanced than us today, but by their standards, still coming out of their 'middle ages.'

I think you don't grasp a galaxy with solar systems who are far more advanced than our own.

Having every ship able to hyperspace/wormhole/warp drive FTL should be a clue these are planets whose species are Type II civilizations.

For reference, we are Type 0 and nearing Type I.

In short, they are centuries more more advanced technologically, but are a collection of farmers with centers of education protected by monks and very advanced technologies, to super large urban centers, now just a bunch of wait stations always centered around sand planets.

It's always been an absurd back drop, and after destroying The Empire the first result would be to start rebuilding, not still living out in waste land worlds.

Lucas isn't making this one, he's only giving advice.

To be honest that is what is worrying me. The original movies were great mostly because of help in direction and writing that he received. Once he took complete control over the prequels it all turned into The mess we know. His remastering of the originals took those into the same direction

Lucas has some great ideas but his writing (especially dialogue) and direction are severely flawed.

Then you should like this, they don't have to listen to anything he says if they think it's bad.

This trailer gave me goosebumps. The special effects look more realistic than the CGI in 1-3. I got a feeling I haven't felt in 37 years, when the music came on at the end. Go baby go!!!!!!

Where's the lens flare?

Needs more lens flare. You know thats getting egregiously applied in post production.

I think you don't grasp that technological innovation is non-linear. If humanity had to develop biologically or technologically over again, there is zero chance it'd proceed making the same discoveries and advancements in the same order again. Innovations can be accumulative, but discoveries are unpredictable and depend on myriad circumstances. What seems advanced for us may not be advanced for another galaxy. The mineral composition of their planets & resultant fields may be all it takes to have lightsabers and speederbikes and a "force". We have species on our own planet that utilize our magnetosphere for navigation and communication.

The starwars galaxy is no Type II civilization. Its high-water mark for government is a freakin circa-1700's USA-style republic for crying out loud. There's nothing advanced about any of it. They've just got a couple energy technologies we don't have. Their whole galaxy hasn't even developed beyond our basic WWII-era worldview of primitive power-heirarchies, wealth-hording schemes, and dominance and aggression plays.

Also, technological development is not homogenous. This strange notion that just because your civilization discovers and innovates hyperspace/wormhole/FTL engines (without burning up entire suns to do it), you've solved poverty and capitalism and inequality completely and everyone lives in ethereal palaces in the sky or whatever... have you ever travelled? Consider the lives of our own worlds basic subsistence farming cultures, or nomads, or poverty-locked natives, or other undesirables, and then consider right here in this same human civilization on the same planet, we have people building their own spaceships, buying and selling companies worth more than entire countries just to shut them down, spending more money on disposable cars and toys and computers than it takes to feed entire communities for a year. It's an enormously more drastic inequality than anything depicted in the Star Wars galaxy. ...and it's that way by design here. We make it part of our economic policy, and spread it around the world by force. If we were so motivated to branch out into the solar system and galactic neighborhood, you can bet we'd spread it there too. One brilliant rocket scientist doesn't mean everyone else isn't still a primitive money-grubber.

There are always people on the fringes of every society, who will settle if they can scrape together a meager living and remain independent.

That was 90 seconds of footage. That's not a teaser, that's a trailer. We saw at least 1% of the entire movie right there - teasers are normally closer to 0.3%.

Furthermore, that was so completely uninteresting. That looked like it had the potential to be worse than the prequels, as if they weren't bad enough.

I'll never understand how anyone could be interested in such a stupid universe where the "best" warriors choose to bring swords to gun fights (given how swiftly hundreds of jedi are killed by storm troopers in Episode 3 and how few storm troopers are put down, it seems to me that the title of jedi is highly overrated). Anyone who's interested in a scientific universe that isn't retarded, all 7 seasons of Star Trek Next Generation is all available on Netflix (and other streaming services.) You could probably choose the worst 9 hours of footage from that show and every hour would be better than the best hour of Star Wars.

You are wrong in so many ways. You are comparing a TV series with movies. I'll take the time to reply as other may enjoy some of the references made.
-there are no traditional swords they are light sabers: an elegant weapon from a more civilized aged.
With one of then you can do many things you can't with a sword like making openings through different kind of metal alloys that a blaster or gun cannot allow you to.

There is reference to the one shown in the trailer it's called Crossguard light saber, as other mentioned they can help to protect the hand of the user.

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Crossguard_lightsaber

Some functions of a light saber:
stabbing
cutting
melting
heating
deflecting
shielding
fighting
burning
lighting

- Those who killed plenty of Jedi were clone troopers not storm troopers, and they outnumbered the Jedis as they were soldiers fighting along side Jedis, the element of surprise was key in their success to effectively killed them. Meele combat vs distant shooting, when outnumbered it's not an easy fight.

Lego version of the trailer:

If I want to fall asleep I just try to watch a star trek movie, after 5 minutes it is 100% effective.
