Ideally, this is the first step towards not having to carry a bank card. Or any cards/money. Or even keys.

One day, I hope I'm able to leave the house with nothing but my phone and have everything I need.

I can't wait until even beyond that, ya know? The part where we don't even need a phone, just have barcoded imprints on our wrists! /sarcasm

I'm all for these advancements except for the fact that we have a centralized banking system. Moving toward this sort of implementation, it becomes easier to quell political dissenters.

If it weren't for the forced centralization of banks, I'd be at Starbucks using this right now!

Why the hate? Seriously, why? Saying their products are overpriced is a statement of fact. Calling their clientele idiots is just mean.

Well, then they are mentally challenged ok? Paying 4.35 for a pint of warm milk, give me break... It's mainly for hipsters going there to use WiFi, pretending they do some sort of digital art, or freelance journalism.

It sounds pretty sweet, but I'm curious to know how that is secured. What happens if your phone gets stolen?

Go to the starbucks gift card website and click "report card as stolen"

Anyhow, the app has a built-in passcode feature, which is found in the settings.

I was at Starbucks (aka Crackbucks) the other day and while waiting for the barista I browsed the Starbucks app thinking how cool it would be to order and pay from it. I have a Nespresso machine at home so I rarely use Starbucks (for any coffee/espresso aficionados I highly recommend Nespresso, cheaper and better than Starbucks)

I see a small benefit, but isn't whipping out your phone, swiping to the Starbucks app, and bringing up your barcode about as time-consuming as removing a card from your wallet?

I would get onboard if you could ORDER from your phone ahead of time! THAT would be a sweet feature. Even if you had to give them, say, 30 minutes or an hour's advanced notice that would be cool. For example, it's 7:15 AM now. I'm going to pick up my Grande Whateverino at 8:00 AM, please have it ready by then. I just drop by, scan my Starbucks barcode and I'm on my way.

I like Starbucks, but sometimes I dread going because I know that I'm going to have to wait 6-7 minutes in line, another 5-7 to get it...I'm pretty patient, but at that point, I'm thinking of just making some my own or getting fast food coffee

How does it compare to Moka? Did you try both? Moka pot being less than 10% of Nespresso cost, and me being an espresso addict working from home, I have to know every detail.

Ah Moka, the traditional way. Quality, I'd say Nespresso is better. They've been around for decades in Europe, hit stateside a few years ago. There's around 20 different roasts (during the Holidays a few select roasts). All Nespresso machines (we upgraded from the Citiz to the De'Longhi model) have custom settings, you can set how long a "pull" you want from each shot/capsule for the strength you want. Capsules range from $.30-.50 each depending, if you buy the 10 capsule box it's cheaper. To order, you have an online account (there's even an iPhone/iPad app), select the flavours you want (Nespresso also has drinkware, food/flavours, etc.), sent in 1-2 days. Plus the machines are easy to maintain/clean.

The Nespresso aeroccino is great for latte's/cappuccino's; it froths milk (or anything) either hot or cold.

We had a traditional De'Longhi machine that was a PITA - cleaning and such. The moka is great, the pots are inexpensive and I love the aroma, reminds me of my childhood when my family spent the Holidays with our Italian friends. I like the simplicity of the Nespresso system; wake up have dazed, turn it on, drop in a capsule of the flavor you want, hit the "espresso" or "coffee/long" selection, and done. They're easy to use/maintain, my 65 year old tech deficient mother knows how to use it. :)

My bad, I thought that was a new feature. Hmmm. Some reason I must have assumed/read wrong (was in a rush). With the previous app you could store your favourite drink, I thought with your favourites you could select it, send it their way, pay when you arrive and go. THAT would be cool, then again they'd have a ton of online orders slamming them and who knows if the person would show (maybe paying for it before you arrive would be a way to keep people from flaking?)

Think beyond your latte!

Read some posts as to the benefits of this.

I think it would be great if all my loyalty cards and store cards could be like this. I hate carrying all the cards for different grocery stores, drug stores, etc.

Starbucks alone this is just kind of cool and fun... but I hope we see more loyalty cards go this route. I'd love to toss them all.

I would be nice to see NFC happen in a meaningful way in the US, but realistically I don't see it. We're too backwards, mobile phone penetration is still lagging behind a lot of other countries

uhhh?? like inventing the iPhone in Cupertino, California????

Seems to me to that whipping out a five dollar bill and getting back a few coins to put in my pocket is about as fast as any method of paying, plus I don't have to be secretive about entering my phone's lock code in front of a crowd.

Just what we need. Another gadget for the guy who sits in the corner of Starbucks all day with his MBP and a bluetooth headset sticking out of his ear. You know the guy - the one that sits there shouting down his headset about how awesome he is to his coworkers.

I hate that guy...

Seriously - why is there the need to sit in a coffee shop and work? Don't get me wrong, I love a good cup of coffee (Costa coffee in the UK is WAY better than any Starbucks btw!) but wont sit in a coffee shop all day paying 10x the cost of making a cuppa at home! Crazy foo's! :p

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPad; U; CPU OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

I would love to see Apple jump on NFC tech in future. It would help make that NFC chip in my Nexus S less useless by more adoption.

Pretty cool technology here. Japan has been doing this for years with their phones. We are years and years behind them in phone technology. Something innovative shows up and now everyone complains.

I've used the Chipotle app a few times. In my experience, the only advantage is you get to cut in line. But they generally haven't prepared my order and I have to wait for them to still do that.

Maybe I should complain.

That line cutting is pretty sweet, though, at the lunch rush and during evening rush hour. Our Chipotle gets slammed then!

To be honest, I am probably one of the few that use the app at my local Chipotle. The first two times, they didn't have the order prepared. The next two times I pre-called to make sure someone knew the order was placed (I think it arrives via their fax). The last five times I went, my order was ready and hot. Maybe use of the app is up or my office eats there waaaaay too much. :p

Hope life inside the Beltway is treating you well. I used to live there.

For some of us that work remotely from a home office, sometimes it's nice to have a change of scenery and be around people. Not saying that's why all these types are there, but I know that's why I'm there sometimes.

I've come across news blurbs recently that seem to indicate that both Apple and Google are not going to disappoint us on that front. Just wish I remembered where I saw the articles.

Yeah, I know what do about a misplaced Starbucks card. :p

I was referring to Japan, where everything is paid using your phone.

Cool... I used this while I was in Seattle last year... worked really well. Good to hear I'll be able to do it closer to home now.

Why exactly is this useful?

It's the Future. Period....

And it's useful for the same reasons that writing checks, swiping credit cards or debit cards, using ATMs or Cash Machines, using a PayPal account, selling things on eBay or Craigslist, using EZ Pass or FastPass on your car ....
We never knew we needed these things until they became a reality.... now we can scan our phones in front of a reader... pay for a purchase, and be on our way....;)

There is already a Chipotle app. I use it every time I go there.

It is a great app with the ability to name your various entrées (at my Chipotle, they write the name on the outside foil of each burrito) so when I get back to the office, I know who gets what. Also, it allows you to make special requests at the end of each entrée (ex. only light lettuce).

When you get to the Chipotle, they have special iPhone order parking at the front. You stroll right up to the cashier, show your iPhone, and stroll right out with your food. The app provides prepayment. Typically, everyone waiting in line wonders who the hell I am. LOL.

I knew there was an app, but didn't realize it let you do all of that. I'm going to try it out the next time I plan on eating there.

Pretty neat but a little scary, next they will just give a mark on our four heads, or on our hand to scan, that we can't buy or sale without, oh wait that's something else.......

I stayed home last year, made my own espressos/cappus/coffees... saved up enough to buy iPad2 this year. Yeah, I missed staring at all those amazingly hip and sexy people in there with their piercings and weird hair, but I managed somehow.

I apologize to the forum for feeding the troll.

Next up, an app to copy other people's QR code. Take a picture of the phone of someone in line and voilà, cheap coffee! Seriously, this thing is easier to crack than those RFID paypass.

I'm just interested in how secure this would be. I'd be concerned about skimming. I've already considered EMI shielding my wallet.

Yeah this RFID crap is getting ridiculous. They are actually starting to put them in credit cards for "convenience"...apparently they think its just too hard to swipe cards.

Call me paranoid, but I think wireless in general isn't very secure at all. I still have my home wired 90s style. Not only is it more reliable its more secure.
