Yeah this RFID crap is getting ridiculous. They are actually starting to put them in credit cards for "convenience"...apparently they think its just too hard to swipe cards.

Call me paranoid, but I think wireless in general isn't very secure at all. I still have my home wired 90s style. Not only is it more reliable its more secure.
You are paranoid.

The Japanese have figured it out. They've been using cellphones for NFC contactless payment for about six years.

I've been using this for about two weeks now. And I'm a heavy Starbucks user.

I like it as it is protected behind my passcode, I can reload it without having to go to a Starbucks, and it shows my balance live so I don't need a receipt.

It's pretty much perfect.

I do like being the first guy that many Barristas used this. I even had one get really excited when instead of cash or card, handed my phone over.

The only downside went away today: not being able to use it at every Starbucks.

Hey, free, easy to use and more secure than my wallet? Sold.

Boarding passes, credit cards....
it's the wave of the future....
don't fight it all you gen "X"-ers :D

Fight it? Hell. I've been on the front lines to bring it.

I'm a guy in the day had security badge, Hockey-puck Beeper, Celphone, and Palm V on his belt. I looked like batman.

Its a cool technology but for myself i like conveniently "forgetting" my phone a lot. Also when I do have my phone, I usually leave it in the car when I go into a coffee shop.

I guess this is good for the tech-savvy and the early adopters, but since most people over the age of 30 can't figure out how to send a text message on their phone, we've got a long way to go before using your phone as any sort of payment device becomes mainstream....

You can still use both. the phone app is just a digital version of an existing card. So if you use the card, then look at the phone, the balance is updated just as if you used the phone.

over 30? stake-to-the-heart. This 42 year old can text message just fine, thank you very much :D

I've been using the Starbucks Mobile Card app for awhile now - in fact it was my mom that turned me on to the app :D As others have stated, I like it because I can easily reload my card, see the balance, and see how far away I am from my next free drink. And sometimes I leave my card in the pants or jacket I wore the day before, so I like the idea of being able to use my phone to pay when my card isn't handy. Maybe I'll try it tomorrow....

I love how in Japan you can shop at a convenience store, ride the metro, buy a movie ticket, and pay for a meal all by swiping your mobile.
Well then, it is amazing that I can shop at a convenience store, buy a movie ticket, pay for a meal and buy gas for my car (The metro? Public transportation is so unAmerican) all by swiping my credit card. :)

Starbucks today announced that its mobile payments solution for the iPhone, iPod touch, and select BlackBerry devices is now available nationwide

Yet the most popular smartphone OS isn't supported, hmmm.

I guess I don't really care though, since I don't drink nasty coffee anyways. :D

Well, then they are mentally challenged ok? Paying 4.35 for a pint of warm milk, give me break... It's mainly for hipsters going there to use WiFi, pretending they do some sort of digital art, or freelance journalism.

2003 called... it wants its stereotype back.

"Nationwide". Assumes everyone is in the US as per usual.

We'll probably see it in 2013. If we're lucky.

Yeah, kind of sucks when an American site is reporting on an American coffee company releasing an app for an American made phone then says "nationwide". As much of a global citizen that I am, I am sick of you whining Brits always complaining about this. Get over it already! Maybe if your country actually contributed anything worthwhile globally, then they can state "nationwide" too and the rest of the world could be just as jealous...

Um, I made a measly $95,000 last year from my digital art and freelance journalism... what have you done lately?

It's always people like you that constantly complain and bash others; that are just so jealous that they aren't doing anything worthy in their lives. Just saying...

taking out an iphone, blackberry or android phone - launching an app and having them scan my screen for a cup of coffee is a bit much for me at 8:30am

but hey whatever gets you going in the morning
